Gold is an upcoming 2018 Indian Hindi-language historical sports drama film directed by Reema Kagti and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under the Excel Entertainment banner.[1][2] It stars Akshay Kumar, Mouni Roy, Kunal Kapoor, Vineet Kumar Singh, Amit Sadh, Sunny Kaushal. A historical sports drama inspired by India’s first Olympic gold medal. The film traces the “golden era” of Indian hockey through the journey of Tapan Das, a young assistant manager in 1936, who dreams of playing for an independent nation.[3]

The film is based on the first ever hockey medal that was won by India after Independence. It focuses on the Golden era of Indian hockey.

Development

The official announcement of the film was made in October 2016 by its lead actor Akshay Kumar.[11][12] The Arjuna Award winner and former Indian national hockey team captain, Sandeep Singh, was signed to train the actors to improve their hockey skills.[13]

Major shooting was done in Yorkshire and The Midlands, England.

Director Reema Kagti said, "It’s a fictional take on what happened. Also, it is not just the golden victory in 1948 we will be looking at, but it will encompass 12 crucial years in India’s history."[14]

Filming

The Principal photography of the film began on 1 July, 2017 in Bradford, England.[15][16][17] The shooting of the film was carried out in Yorkshire at Bradford, Doncaster and Rotherham.[18][19] After finishing the England schedule, the production team of Gold moved to Punjab in September 2017 for its second schedule in which shooting was done in Amritsar and Patiala.[20][21][22] The final schedule of the film was completed in Mumbai in December 2017.[23] On 10 December 2017, Akshay Kumar announced that the filming process of Gold had been completed.[24][25][26] The teaser for the film was launched on 5 February 2018.[27]

The film is expected to be released on 15 August 2018.[2][28]

Soundtrack

Sachin-Jigar[2] will compose songs and background music for the film. Additional songs will be composed by Arko Pravo Mukherjee[2] and Tanishk Bagchi.[2] Lyrics will be written by Javed Akhtar.[2] The movie also samples songs such as the Colonel Bogey March and India's National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana.

Release

The movie is due to be released on 15th August 2018 in India, to tie-in with Independence Day. International distribution has not yet been announced, but is expected to be about the same time. The trailer has been out on June 25. [29]
