History

[edit]

Since Superhero movies have been around since the 70s since Superman, The Academy of Motion Picture of Arts and Sciences has been reluctant to give an Oscar for those films, since they mostly get nominated or win for the technical side of the film instead of Best Picture. But since the start of the 2000s with the success of the X-Men franchise and Sam Raimi's Spider-Man Trilogy, the Academy reconsidered their plans, as they announced a new category for films based on a comic book starting in 2008 with the first award given to The Dark Knight.
