Avon Plate Football Club are an English football club based in the City of Bristol. The Club, founded in 1997, fields two teams in the Bristol and District Sunday League. The A-Team currently play in Division One and the B-Team in Division Three. The 2008/09 season saw Avon Plate promoted to Division One and the creation of a B-Team for the 2009/10 season.
History
[edit]Avon Plate Football Club was formed in 1997 and in only a few short years has established itself as the third major club in Bristol behind only Bristol City and The Lebeq Tavern in stature.
The founders of the team, a mixture of friends, friends of friends and obscure drinking associates, had been playing five-a-side at Easton Community Centre for over a season before James Masters and Daniel Thomas finally put into action the plans they'd hatched with Neil Boulton and Yos David during a gin fuelled afternoon session at the Cat & Wheel, St Paul's.
The team they would form would be based upon their love of South American and British football. A team that would celebrate the international fellowship the The Beautiful Game creates.
The Club first played competitively in the Bristol Civils League in season 1997-98. During their three seasons in the league The Mighty Plate slowly but surely built the foundations of a successful Sunday League side. The Avon Plate Squad Soviet was formed to control club affairs and elect a Committee of Selection and Management. A home pitch was established, Fortress Bush at Henleaze, Bristol and sponsorship deals were finalised with The Old England public house.
As the Club matured the squad expanded and the fan base grew, Avon Plate went on to join the Bristol and District Sunday League for the 2000-01 season.
The Club has members spread across all parts of Bristol but it is Easton where you will find the majority of the Club's players. Avon Plate are currently sponsored by The Greenbank, Easton.
Facts
[edit]The team is named after the Argentinian team River Plate, Avon being the river of Bristol and the derivative of afon, the celtic word for river.
The battle cry of Avon Plate is VAMOS! which is Spanish for "Come on!" or "Let's go!"
