Welcome!
[edit]Welcome to Wikipedia, ~ Sohom! Thank you for your contributions. I am Masumrezarock100 and I have been editing Wikipedia for some time, so if you have any questions, feel free to leave me a message on my talk page. You can also check out Wikipedia:Questions or type {{help me}}
at the bottom of this page. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:
- Introduction
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- How to edit a page
- Help pages
- How to write a great article
- Discover what's going on in the Wikimedia community
Also, when you post on talk pages you should sign your name using four tildes (~~~~); that will automatically produce your username and the date. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian!
Sincerely,

Username
[edit]Hi! I think your username is really cool, at the same time, it is also really hard to ping people with a super script username see Sohom 45789 as an example. I'd like to suggest that you consider changing your username. You can see if a name is available by checking here. You can then request a rename either by replying directly to me here, and I'll handle it, or by going to Special:GlobalRenameRequest. Thanks! TonyBallioni (talk) 06:51, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
- Can I possibly get the username User:Sohom ? It says the username is not registered on the userpage but when I inputed it in the account creation box it said it was taken. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ~ Sohom (talk • contribs)
- You'd have to go to meta to usurp it, which could take a month. A possible solution that could work for the power sign would be Sohom^45789? ^ being the computer sign for exponents :) Sorry to be a bother about this, I'm normally the last person being picky on usernames, but being able to ping is pretty important for communication these days, which is why I brought it up. TonyBallioni (talk) 07:01, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
- I don't really like the caret signed username. I'll go with User:~ Sohom it's a bit cooler than the usual number and letters stuff and I have seen some people with this sort of username. Also, what is meta and usurp ?Sohom ⁴⁵⁷⁸⁹ (talk) 07:12, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
I got logged out ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ~ Sohom (talk • contribs)
- Yes, I just processed the rename. When a rename is run, it logs the user out of their account for a short period. Since you edited with your IP, I went ahead and suppressed your IP address so not even administrators can see it.Since the User:Sohom is taken, but has no edits on any Wikimedia project, you can request that it be moved. This process is done on meta wiki a project for coordination between Wikimedia projects. It usually takes about a month. If you want to do that, I can comment on the request when I wake up in the morning, but for what it's worth, I actually really like the curren username and think its cool .Anyway, I'm glad you registered. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me on my talk page! TonyBallioni (talk) 07:25, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for your help.— Preceding unsigned comment added by ~ Sohom (talk • contribs)
- No problem. Just as a bit of help, when replying you should sign your posts with four tildes
~~~~
. We also normally indent when replying to someone using colons. TonyBallioni (talk) 17:44, 12 February 2019 (UTC)
Just Asking
[edit]I know it is bit too personal. But by any chance are you Bengali?
Another thing, if you reply please ping me using {{ping|Masumrezarock100}} or else I may not be able to check your message.
Sincerely,
Masum Rezatalk 10:27, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
- @Masumrezarock100:, yes, living in West Bengal.Sohom (talk) 12:29, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
- Great. Me too. I assume you are from Kolkata.
Sincerely,
Masum Rezatalk 12:36, 13 February 2019 (UTC)- Yes certainly, great to meet you!Sohom (talk) 12:40, 13 February 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100: Why did you delete my edits ? Sohom (talk) 08:02, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
- I reverted your edits because you removed some valuable informations. One of your reason was uncited sections right. Then I must say I reverted your edit because I am a resident of Baruipur and I have a clear knowledge of my city.
Another thing when replying use {{Reply to|Masumrezarock100}} template.
Sincerely,
Masum Rezatalk 08:15, 14 February 2019 (UTC)- @Masumrezarock100:Okay, I'll keep them in mind when I edit. P.S. What is wrong with the laddu picture ?Sohom (talk) 09:40, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
- The picture you added was of a sweet and offering to God. The section is "Diet" of humans. So I reverted your edit.
Sincerely,
Masum Rezatalk 09:48, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
@Masumrezarock100:I think I need a bit of help from experienced users. Now that I have registered I suddenly feel a bit overwhelmed. There are so many policy pages and rules that I can't understand which to start with....Could you suggest a mentor for me ? Sohom (talk) 10:36, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
- You can ask Girth for help. I think he would be great mentor for you. In fact, he gave counter-vandalism training to Aryan that I am impressed. He is a good mentor.
Sincerely,
Masum Rezatalk 10:49, 14 February 2019 (UTC) - I’m also willing to mentor you if you want. My talk page is always open, and I have yours watchlisted. Just let me know what you’re interested in and I can give you some pointers. TonyBallioni (talk) 18:16, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
- Tony Ballioni, sure I am interested. I asked Girth on his page and he said that he was mainly focused on countering vandalism but he gave me some good links which I have read and I just completed the Wikipedia adventure which Girth linked to right now. :)Sohom (talk) 18:37, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
- Yep, all useful. I actually recommend new editors start out editing content before moving on to maintenance stuff: it both helps you learn why we’re here and makes it so when you help in other areas people take you more seriously. If you have topics you are interested in, I can try to point you to articles that could use expanding and walk through getting one to WP:DYK with you. - Sure, I am mainly interested in West Bengal and India. Sohom (talk) 09:18, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
Could you suggest a possible article that I can expand Sohom (talk) 03:03, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
- Sorry I didn't see this until just now. So what I normally recommend people do is look for a stub that is only a few sentences long that they can try to expand. India is a tough area to edit in at first, but if that is what you're passionate about, you should still edit there. I'm going to ping my friend Vanamonde to see if he has any suggestions for you in that area. Maybe there is a biography that could use expanding or something. We'll see :) TonyBallioni (talk) 04:03, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
- I think I'll try to expand Madan Mitra. There is a lot of material freely available on him in the web. Sohom (talk) 14:36, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for the ping, TonyBallioni. Hi Sohom, and welcome to Wikipedia. I see that you've started editing some pages related to history and infrastructure in Bengal. There's a considerable number of pages in those areas that could use work: this list would be a good place to start. For instance, Henry Island is pitifully short, and any expansion based on good sources would be very helpful. At the moment, I would advise you to avoid politics as much as possible, and if that is an area you are interested in, to be very circumspect in your editing. South Asian politics can be very contentious topics on Wikipedia, and you're better off learning the ropes in a less troublesome area. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions you might have. Best, Vanamonde (Talk) 17:08, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
- @Vanamonde93: Okay I'll follow your advice and stay of politics for now Sohom (talk) 18:13, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
@Vanamonde93:@Tony Ballioni: Where can you find for scholarly refs on Indian subjects ? Also can one ref be used to write most of an article ? Sohom (talk) 12:07, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
- Google scholar and google books are where I usually begin searching. If you have difficulty accessing a source (because of a paywall, for instance), you can ask for help at WP:RX. Your second question is somewhat trickier. If the source is a low-quality or primary source, then definitely not. If it is a high-quality source, then in principle, yes, you can base an entire article on it. However, you have to be careful about giving due weight to all significant points of view. If a particular source is the only source about a certain topic, it's again not a problem. If multiple sources exist, and they disagree, then using only one of them creates problems with WP:NPOV. I hope that helps. Best, Vanamonde (Talk) 18:33, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
- Google books is definitely a great starting point. I also echo Vanamonde’s advice above to avoid Indian politics as a new editor. It can be contentious and isn’t the best environment for newer editors. TonyBallioni (talk) 18:59, 17 February 2019 (UTC)
