The first child of Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, a son, was born on 6 May 2019. He is seventh in line of succession to the British throne.
Pregnancy and birth
Kensington Palace announced on 15 October 2018 that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were expecting their first child.[1] In early April 2019, a global campaign in honour of the unborn child of the Duke and Duchess raised £22,000 for their favourite charities.[2] The couple responded to the campaign — calling it a special surprise — and officially asked their well-wishers to make donations to a number of charities in lieu of sending gifts.[3]
Buckingham Palace announced that, in the early hours of 6 May 2019, the Duchess had gone into labour. A son was born at 05:26 BST (04:26 UTC) on the same day, with his father present for the birth.[4] As he will automatically receive American citizenship, he is the first member of the British royal family to be born with dual British and American citizenship, and the first member of the family to be acknowledged as being of multiracial heritage.[5]
Although The Duke and Duchess of Sussex had previously said they had planned to keep details of the birth private, Prince Harry spoke to reporters at Windsor Castle to announce the birth of his son later on the same day. The baby is expected to make his first appearance in front of the media on 8 May.[6]
He was born 109 years to-the-day of the death of his great-great-great-great-grandfather, Edward VII of the United Kingdom.
Title
According to Robert Hardman, the children of the Duke and Duchess will be lord and lady "like the children of any other duke", because Prince Harry is not expected to become king.[1] Traditionally, the eldest son of a duke uses one of his father's subsidiary titles as a courtesy title. In this case, should that custom be followed, the title used would be Earl Dumbarton, the highest of Prince Harry's subsidiary titles.[7][8][9]
Should his paternal grandfather, Charles, Prince of Wales, become King, he will be entitled to the style of Royal Highness and the title of Prince of the United Kingdom, as a male-line grandchild of the sovereign.
Ancestry
He is a male line descendant of Elimar I, Count of Oldenburg, a member of the House of Oldenburg, one of Europe's oldest royal houses. The cadet branch, known as the House of Glücksburg, was founded by his paternal ancestor Friedrich Wilhelm, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg. His paternal great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, issued letters patent on 8 February 1960 declaring his grandfather to be a member of the House of Windsor. His male line ancestors include eleven Counts of Oldenburg, two dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg, five dukes of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Beck, a duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg, four Danish kings – Christian I, Frederick I, Christian III, Christian IX – and King George I of Greece.[10]
Ancestors on his father's side include most of the royal families of Europe,[10] and the Earls Spencer[11]; on his mother's side they include African Americans enslaved in Georgia[12], and German, English and Irish immigrants to the United States.
