Thomas Bartlett (born October 13, 1981), also known as Doveman, is an American pianist, producer, and singer, known for his work with Yoko Ono, St. Vincent, The National, Rhye, Norah Jones, and many others. He produced Sufjan Stevens' Carrie & Lowell, and three songs for the film Call Me by Your Name including "Mystery of Love" (nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2018); and for the final season of Game of Thrones he produced Florence + the Machine's "Jenny of Oldstones". He has released four solo albums as Doveman, four albums as a member of the acclaimed Irish band The Gloaming, and duo albums with the composer Nico Muhly and the hardanger d'amore player Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh.

Bartlett, who was born and raised in Putney, Vermont, studied piano as a teenager in London with the legendary teacher Maria Curcio[1], and has lived in New York City since 2000.

Musical Career

Popcorn Behavior

Bartlett met his friend and longterm collaborator Sam Amidon at the age of 6, and together they became immersed in the New England contra dance scene, starting the band Popcorn Behavior when they were 10. They released 4 albums over the next decade, were interviewed on All Things Considered at 16, and performed at contra dances across the country.

Doveman

As Doveman, Bartlett released three albums of original material between 2005-2009, all produced by constant collaborator Patrick Dillett, all featuring Amidon on guitar and banjo, and with The Conformist featuring Norah Jones, Glen Hansard, Martha Wainwright, and members of the National. In 2008 he released a self-recorded re-imagining of the Footloose soundtrack. As Doveman he has also collaborated extensively with filmmaker and activist Tom Kalin, and their work together has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and the 2014 Outfest in Los Angeles.

As a Sideman

Bartlett, who Rufus Wainwright has called "one of the greatest living pianists"[2], has been prolific as a sideman, both on record and on stage, and is particularly renowned as an accompanist for singers, having performed duo with a diverse range of artists including Mandy Patinkin, St. Vincent, Lou Reed, Renee Fleming, Emmylou Harris, Mary Margaret O'Hara, Martha Wainwright, Guy Garvey, and many others. He has played keyboards on all albums by The National since 2007's Boxer, and toured extensively with Antony and the Johnsons, Bebel Gilberto, Elysian Fields, and Glen Hansard.

The Gloaming

The Gloaming was formed in 2011 by fiddle player Martin Hayes, guitarist Dennis Cahill, vocalist Iarla Ó Lionáird, fiddle player Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, and Bartlett. They have released four albums, all produced by Bartlett, and are credited with having revitalized Irish traditional music. While touring they have headlined at some major venues including Carnegie Hall, the Sydney Opera House, the Royal Albert Hall, Teatro de la Ciudad, the Barbican, the Lincoln Center, the Philharmonie de Paris, the ElbPhiharmonie, Muziekgebouw, the Philharmonie Luxembourg, the Chan Center, the Kennedy Center, the Berklee Performance Center, the Walker Art Center, among many others, all the while maintaining an annual residency each spring at Dublin's National Concert Hall which has resulted in a record breaking 31 consecutive sold out performances. The Gloaming are signed to Real World Records, whose founder, musician Peter Gabriel, described them as “a wonderful mix of soulful and passionate talents who have created their own genre”.
