A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon (also known as Farmageddon: A Shaun the Sheep Movie or Shaun the Sheep Movie 2) is a 2019 British stop-motion animated science fiction comedy film produced by Aardman Animations. Directed by Will Becher and Richard Phelan in their directorial debuts, it is the stand-alone sequel to Shaun the Sheep Movie (2015) and is based on the claymation television series Shaun the Sheep, in turn based on the 1995 film A Close Shave created by Nick Park. The film stars Justin Fletcher, John Sparkes, Kate Harbour and Rich Webber reprising their roles from the series and the previous film. In the film, Shaun and the flock encounter a cute alien with extraordinary powers, who crash lands near Mossy Bottom Farm. They have to find a way to return her home in order to prevent her falling into the hands of the Ministry for Alien Detection.[2]

Plans for a sequel began in 2015, following the release of the first film. The film officially began production following the end of production of Early Man (2018). Richard Starzak was announced to return as director, however, in November 2018, the film was later announced to be directed by Becher and Phelan.

A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon was released on 18 October 2019 in the United Kingdom.

Plot

In the city of Mossington, Farmer John, a farmer, and his dog discover a UFO. Both run in surprise from a mysterious alien who comes out of the spaceship.

On Mossy Bottom Farm, Shaun and the flock enjoy their activities, only for Bitzer to stop them from their activities, one of which is to jump from a ramp through a ring. The following evening, Shaun decides to order three pizzas from a takeaway near the landing of the UFO. The alien travels in the box and eats the pizzas, confusing the sheep.

The next morning, Shaun exits the barn, only to follow a trail of pizza crusts, leading him to the alien. The visitor introduces herself as Lu-La, an impish and purple alien from Topa with extraterrestrial powers. When Shaun introduces her to the flock, she causes mischief with a tractor, transforming hedges behind the barn house into unintentional crop circles; due to recent news of sitings, the Farmer realises he can create an alien-based theme park, "Farmageddon", in which he can get money to afford a new tractor.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Alien Detection leader Agent Red, and her robot assistant Mugg-1N5, search for Lu-La's trail. Farmer John takes them to the sighting area but discovers there is no spaceship, Red sends them to an unknown location.

At Mossy Bottom Farm, Lu-La reveals her home planet to Shaun; he agrees to help get the UFO back. Travelling to Mossington, Lu-La causes chaos at a nearby supermarket. After exiting the supermarket, Bitzer, now wearing an alien style suit, notices Shaun. However, glue gets stuck to his foot. This glue, plus the suit, cause M.A.D to think Bitzer is the alien.

At the UFO, Lu-La and Shaun enter, only to discover a crucial credential has gone missing. Whilst looking, Bitzer enters into a chamber and is put to sleep and M.A.D have captured the spaceship to their HQ.

At the secret headquarters, Bitzer awakens and the organisation teaches him about Earth culture. Meanwhile, Shaun and Lu-La look for the credential, an egg-shaped sphere used to power Lu-La's ship. Red's motives are revealed: when she was younger, she saw aliens. The next school day, she drew a picture but was laughed at in the face.

Lu-La and Shaun retrieve the sphere and meet Bitzer. They restart the ship and exit the atmosphere. The programmes are headed for Topa, only to be reassigned back to the farm. This sudden change causes the UFO to speed up and smash to oblivion.

Shaun realises the sphere can be used to contact Topa, particularly Lu-La's parents Ub-Do and Me-Ma. He and Lu-La attempt to reach the top of the Farmer's "Farmageddon" theme park.

The Farmer opens the theme park at £30. Shaun, the flock and Lu-La enter disguised as Daleks. Shaun and Lu-La begin to climb the sign, only for Red, Mugg-1N5 and M.A.D to arrive, attempting to catch Bitzer, still convinced he's an alien.

Red converts her van into a giant robot-type thing and uses it it to climb to sign to catch Bitzer. After discovering Bitzer's true identity, Red discovers Lu-La climbing the sign. When the pair arrive at the top, Lu-La attempts to contact Topa, only for her to realise her magic disappeared after the UFO crashed.

Ub-Do and Me-Ma arrive at the scene, reuniting with Lu-La. Red remembers seeing the aliens and visa versa. Shaun, Bitzer and the flock say their goodbyes, ending the Farmer's "Farmageddon".

Whilst on their way back to Topa, Lu-La, Ub-Do and Me-Ma discover the Farmer on their UFO.

Now back on Earth, the Farmer tries out his new tractor, only for it to blow up, scaring Shaun, Bitzer and Timmy.

Production

On 14 September 2015, StudioCanal announced it was working with Aardman on a sequel to Shaun the Sheep Movie.[4] On 25 October 2016, under the working title, Shaun the Sheep Movie 2, Aardman confirmed a sequel would go into pre production in January 2017 with Richard Starzak, co director of the first film, returning.[5]

As of November 2018, it was announced that Aardman employees Richard Phelan and Will Becher will be co directing the film, with Starzak still attached as director, due to Peter Lord and David Sproxton giving majority of ownership to employees to keep the company independent.

Release

A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon was first released in Germany on 26 September 2019 while in the United Kingdom, it was released on 18 October 2019. The film was planned for release in the United States on 13 December 2019, but this release was cancelled.[citation needed]

Marketing

In January 2018, it was announced that the teaser of the film would play theatrically in front of the other Aardman film, Early Man, worldwide, revealing the film's new title and synopsis.[6] On 7 December 2018, Aardman announced through their social media that the teaser trailer for the film along with release dates would be arriving the following week. The teaser trailer was released on 11 December 2018, followed by the first official trailer released on 1 April 2019.[7] On 3 July 2019 the second trailer was released.[8]

Reception

Box office

As of the 20th of October 2019, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon has made $9.5 million.[9] With the top grossing country’s being Germany ($3.7M), Italy ($627K) and Switzerland ($347K).

Critical response

The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes records 96% positive reviews based on 24 critics and an average rating of 7.55/10.[10]

Video game

A movie adaptation of Home Sheep Home, entitled Home Sheep Home: Farmageddon Party Edition was released on Nintendo Switch in October 2019. Shaun, Shirley and Timmy find their way back to the green grass of home, all hosted by Shaun’s new alien pal Lu-La![11] The platform-puzzle game contained all the much loved gameplay from previous Home Sheep Home games.[12]
