Heidi N. Closet (born September 29, 1994) is the stage names of Trevien Anthonie Cheek, an American drag queen from Ramseur, North Carolina, best known a contestant on RuPaul's Drag Race season 12.

Early life

Cheek was born and raised in Ramseur, North Carolina, a town about 10 miles east of Asheboro, North Carolina with a population of less than 2,000, where they are outnumbered by chickens.[1] He attended Eastern Randolph High School winning many trophies as a member of the school's colorguard. He was also a lead dancer in his high school’s Catalyst Dance Company.[2] Prior to being cast on RuPaul's Drag Race, Cheek led a simple life having never been on an airplane.[3] His mother passed away at a young age,[3] and he is estranged from his father. He was raised by his grandmother.

Career

In 2014, shortly after turning 18, Cheek's sister invited her to a drag show in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Cheek has said of seeing his first drag show, “I saw the glamour of being able to do whatever you want to do.”[4]

Cheek's name is a bit of a nod to her home town of Ramseur. As she explained in her Drag Race promotional video, “My drag name came from a joke. It started out as a lot of men from my hometown are closeted and they would always try and get my goodies and whatnotries. I was like, ‘There’s no need to be hiding in the closet.’”[1]

RuPaul's Drag Race

Cheek's participation as a cast member on season 12 of RuPaul’s Drag Race was announced on January 23, 2020[5]. He is the third contestant on the show from North Carolina, following Victoria "Porkchop" Parker (Season 1) and Stacy Layne Matthews (Season 3), and had not previously auditioned for the show[6].

Cheek, the self described Dancing Disco Diva[7], experienced an allergic reaction on her first day of shooting, yet still finished safe. She joked that it may have been "from the hotel's detergent, or something that I may have ate for the first time... Kale."[1] Cheek has faced criticism over his makeup skills, and outfits. On the first episode, Cheek received some stern feedback from guest judge Nicki Minaj, "I hate, hate, haaaaate your hair and makeup today. The wig and the makeup could have enhanced your face even more to match this beautiful gown that you have on." [8] Minaj went on to compliment Cheek's performance, but Cheek was clearly shaken by the comments and asked Minaj for an explanation on the first episode of Untucked[8].

Cheek has also faced criticism from the show's host about his choice for a drag name. RuPaul has made it clear he doesn't like it[9], during episode 10 saying, "I don't know if you've heard the story, but she came here as Heidi N Closet. Rotten!"[10]. With each episode RuPaul refers to Heidi by different names, including Heidi Ho[3], Heidi N Seeky, Heidi Hydrates[10] and Heidi Aphrodite[10].

She’s been dubbed the “heart” of the season by Out Magazine[11]. So far in the competition, Cheek has been in the top 3 three times, and has won one challenge. He has been in the bottom 2 three times, and has sent home two other competitors - Nicky Doll (episode 5) and Brita (episode 7).

Cheek has experienced extreme poverty in his life and career, having indicated that he made $9,000 working at a gas station[8]. It was that same episode that he won the competition, and cash prize of $5,000.
