Cross-space redirects

Can I convince you to put {{db|Created by mistake}} on the wiki-voter shortcut? If I nominate this on RfD it will explode. A cross-namespace redirect to something in userspace is madness. - brenneman {L} 00:23, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just copied a the vandalproof thing like WP:VPRF, so that has to be deleted too if WP:WKV is. I think WP: namespace can be redirected anywhere, because you could just redirect it to Wikipedia:Wikivoter and redirect that to userspace which would cause double redirects just for the purpose of not redirecting WP: to userspace. GeorgeMoney (talk) 00:28, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, first let us disabuse ourselves of the notion that "since Foo exists we canot delete bar." That's simply not true. Secondly, the idea that a double redirect would somehow make it "ok" appears to misunderstand both the problems with double redirects and cross namespace redirects. I take this to mean that you're not going to ask for it to be deleted, then? - brenneman {L} 00:32, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And it's a bit disingenuous to say that you "just copied" the other shortcut when you made that one as well. - brenneman {L} 00:33, 22 August 2006
Well, I might have created WP:VPRF but I copied WP:VandalProof. I Really don't think it should be deleted so if you really wanted it deleted you could take it to rfd and see what many people think. GeorgeMoney (talk) 00:37, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ook. Sorry to have sunk the boot in there, than, my mistake about the creation. I may have taken double my dosage of cranky this morning by accident, and there was no reason to give you a serve over this. I have nominated all three for deletion, though, and if I'm nasty again just give me a slap. - brenneman {L} 00:53, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Userbox Alignment

Hi!

Where refered this question to you and thought that you would more knowledgeable at this.

I was just wondering (because you're the first person I thought of that would know this), Is it possible to align a userbox at the top of the page in the centre? I can do it Left and Right, but not Centre. Thanx!

Tyson Moore 22:13, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again.
Yes, that worked, and, is it also possible to make them all lign up. On my redesign (attempt) there are big :blank spaces to the left and right of the table you made. Or, should I use something like Nvu and make 3 tables and just type all the :{{subst: userboxname}} into the tables as text, then make that my page on wikipedia? I think that might be easier...
Thanks Tyson Moore 23:06, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

css

Hi George! I am asking you this question because I have been referred to you by Kylu. You have a very big and impressive css page that can do a lot of cool stuff. I just want to know, how do I make it all work? Do I have to make my own css page? Thank you for your time.--Chili14 23:49, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Update

I have created my own css page. The problem is, I can't get it to actually do what it says, i.e. I put the "remove logout button" stuff and it is still there. I know how to put it all there, it's just not working.--Chili14 00:43, 29 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings

Hi there.I don't really know what to say. It's hard for me and I assume it must be complicated for all the people in my situation to try a new language out. You see, I've been studying English language since 1995 but, for some reason, I still keep my doubts on the subject. I joined Wikipedia on July 26, 2006 —the Spanish version — and as for a sudden I became deeply acquainted with the English one. I cannot trust myself to do it better, but I would like to; believe me when I say that is my priority. Up to now I've written an average of 30 articles in the Spanish Wikipedia, most of which are based on English and American literature authors and movements. My best ones for so far are es:Frederick Douglass and es:William Shakespeare. On the same way I wrote one article for this wikipedia, originally a translation from Spanish into English. I also added further information to a geography stub. My intention is to help and take part of this wonderful experience, but to do that I may need a hand. Can we work together? Do you want to keep in touch with me? I'm on the web almost all the time. If I'm not here I'm there, always fooling around. Thanks for reading my terrible message. God save me, lol. --Gustavo86 20:24, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox Template

I'm having troubles with this Template:Infobox DCAU character I created. It's creating about 4 blank spaces between the section header and the text and the infobox. Example: Black Manta#Other media#Justice League--The Judge 22:57, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, thanks!! you're the man! hahahah. I worked with that for about 10 hours, I could totally use a break. The hystory section might help you, the infobox started doing that at some point when I was editing it. I created it using the Character template, ading some elements of the superherobox.--The Judge 01:13, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Template page looks great. It's nice to see it so neat now! It still works a little weird on the articles featuring it (almost at the bottom of the Green Arrow, Supergirl, Black Manta and Joker articles, for example), making space between the section header and the first paragraph and it. But it's not so bad now. How did you fixed it, anyways?--The Judge 01:22, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Annoying guy

I've got this annoying guy that is edit warring on me without further explanations than one small comment in the edit summary that doesn't quote any wikipedia guideline (actually I made the changes to fit the guidelines). He says there can't be 2 infoboxes in an article, but the info in it is 100% different and doesn't actualli repeat anything.

He already broke the 3RR, and not wishing to risk being blocked too, I won't rv him a third time.

The name of the guy is CovenantD and he is really annoying the capital H out of me, by making the article less informative, specally since my the nature of his edits are totally irespectful and easy to do, while I had to do a lot of researching and sourcing.

This is the confict, and the article in question is Clock King.

Thanks for your time, I hate to bother you like that.--The Judge 04:59, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He rv your edit :S, but don't worry fortunatelly/unfortunatelly that qualigies that user to a report on the Admins notice board. The fact that there could be people like that really puts me down. Like, what are his motifs? I noticed he seems to be interested in comics, but he seems to be making sure those articles are as less informative ans surced as posible... Why is he bothering, why does he take the time? I mean, I'm sure he can reseach and add facts to an article he likes better instead of choping off the ones he doesn't like. To me it's really hard to understand how such mentality exists.--The Judge 01:30, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sweet, you may wanna change the request on that page then. And hey I just wanna a) congratulate you and b) thank you for your .js and .css pages, a couple weeks ago I knew fricken Zero about scripts, and thanks to you and Voice of All (tho neither of you know this) I gave myself a crash course... and now I am really proud of how my interface looks - hit preview here and take a look at the css for example... and my blocking and warning scripts are all automated now. Outstanding. I'm just tryinbg to learn how to save my monobook locally now like yourself, and unfortunatley there's no guides for that! Lol, no problem I learnt a bit in the process :) Hey what's the best way to add more .js files? Do I just name them differently and add, say;
document.write('<script src="chrome://wikipedia/content/addtabs.js"><\/script>');

to the wikipedia monobook for each one? Thanks again for your help Glen 01:55, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, and does it work for the css? (not that it really matters its so small :) Thanks again!
Hmm, let me see if I have this straight. Let's say, right now my monobook links to the script at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Glen_S/Addtabs.js (for example), I just change the link to read chrome://wikipedia/content/Addtabs.js then place Addtabs.js in the same folder as the monobook? Block IP

Hi GeorgeMoney.

My school principal and I (being the geeks of the school), were wondering if it is possible to put a permanent block on the school's IP address from editing wikipedia, so that the students have to log in. The ip is 70.50.237.242. Could you please contact me before anything happens. I'm just wondering if it's possible.

I don't want to give you the impression that I am trying to annoy you...

You and Where are the only people I know of that can do this (you're like..... wikifriends... the only 2 admins I know of that would do this for me).

Thanx!!

Why doesn't auto archive work?

Could you explain why User:GeorgeMoney/UserScripts/archive is causing me problems? I installed it at User:Will Pittenger/monobook.js, but that disabled WP:POPUPS and wikEd. So I commented it out. I found the instructions a little confusing as I didn't understand what changes to make. It looked like I needed to replace your user name with mine. But I could be wrong. -Will Pittenger 04:59, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, that did not help. Must be something else. Are you using the same other scripts I have installed? Did I install your code correctly? -Will Pittenger 07:09, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Which scripts should be redone? Also, you are no longer disabling other scripts. -Will Pittenger 02:48, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have succesfully archived my talk page. However, please examine this history link: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Will_Pittenger/Archive_Indexer&oldid=88584655. It seems that my talk indexer was included into the archive page twice. Only once is needed. Could that be simply that the page already existed? -Will Pittenger 03:42, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can you help at another Wiki with CSS?

Can you help at Wikia:ChristianMusic? I have a user there who will need some CSS help in order to complete a task I assigned him. I can edit the file, but I would not know what to put in there. For more information, read Wikia:ChristianMusic:User talk:Jesussaves#Credits formatting system needed and Wikia:ChristianMusic:Talk:Sandbox/Credits/.

I have no idea when he will need help. At this point, I think he is sitting back and scratching his head on the problem. I have repeatedly told him to to rush it. Rather, I need the whole thing thought through. -Will Pittenger 03:14, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The CSS problem has nothing to do with infoboxes. We specifically don't want infoboxes for this role because of the amount of stuff that would be in the infoboxes compared to the amount outside the infobox. An article with only infoboxes would have many problems. Yet that is all we would be left with. -Will Pittenger 08:16, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How to look up the current user?

Would you happen to know if there is a template or magic word that evalutates to the name of the current or not? If I am the current user, I would like my archive indexer to recognize that and add a link to the archive manager. -Will Pittenger 03:59, 20 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Most unfortunate. Having some sort of link would be handy. How about a tab on the talk page or a toolbox item? -Will Pittenger 08:18, 22 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

wgUserName isn't much help as I have no JS experience. The closest I can come is a little non-professional C#.NET experience. Actually, I think you should add the archive option to User:GeorgeMoney/UserScripts/archive -Will Pittenger 03:22, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wishlist for Archiving

In addition to what I mentioned above (an Archive link in the toolbox), I would like to see your archive system get more intelligent. User:Werdnabot seems to do a good job. Perhaps, you could borrow some code or logic.

  1. Limit archived conversations to only those that have not been updated in a length of time that would be an option. In addition to the bot I mentioned above, there is a script that localizes times in signatures. Clearly they have a way to see sigs and the dates within. Perhaps you could borrow that code too.
  2. Put an option in the code to delete unsigned posts. I say that as some users say they don't archive them.
  3. Add option to auto-archive on logout. Might require an additional module.

-Will Pittenger 05:07, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

BTW: Unless you can archive only older conversations, please don't auto-archive without asking the user for permission. I would be pretrefied to allow automatic archiving if it always archived everything.
Also, are you able to detect users logging out when they simply close the browser tab or window and allow their cookies to expire. Even with the window open the cookies expire in something like one hour. -Will Pittenger 20:47, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

So what happens when a cookie simply expires with at least one Wikipedia window/tab still open? -Will Pittenger 22:02, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You appear to have mixed up the conversations. Above, I was talking about WP cookies, not yours. -Will Pittenger 22:22, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In my experience, they expire in one hour if not refreshed by loading a new page. I use a shared computer and don't use remember me. Will (Talk - contribs) 22:30, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Does your code add the Warn links to the toolbox? I was upset they only change the subject/headline box. The user tabs script does everything, but I can't tell which template some of the tabs add. (That and you can't cancel.) Could I get the best of both worlds working? -Will Pittenger 05:46, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Default archive number is always null

The Archive Manager is not saving my archive number. Any ideas why? -Will Pittenger 20:44, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Clerk for Requests for Checkuser

Hey GeorgeMoney,

I am messaging you to ask whether you would be interested in reassuming your role as a Request for Checkuser clerk. Currently, the clerk duties are being shared among three experienced clerks, and we have added two new clerks, who are currently in the learning stage. We are currently experiencing backlogs and long waiting times for some actions to occur.

As you are currently listed under "inactive" on our clerk roster, we're asking that if you are willing to resume these clerk activities, please leave a message on my user talk page (quick link). A number of things have changed, so we reccommend re-reading Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Clerks/Guide. The guide is currently being rewritten, but the new and updated version should be available by 00:00 December 12, 2006 (UTC) at the latest.

If you aren't interested in being a checkuser clerk any longer, we accept your decision and thank you for your service; it would be greatly appreciated if you'd leave me a note that you're no longer interested. If you would like to resume your role in the future, but can't do so now, please mention so on my talk page, and I'll note this on our clerk register.

Thanks for your cooperation,

Auto Welcome script

I just noticed and installed your Auto Welcome script. (See User:Will Pittenger/monobook.js#User:GeorgeMoney/UserScripts/autowelcome. You might have to manually purge the page to get the section link to work.)

Unfortunately, it activated any time I edited any page. Even when I attempted to disable the script, it ran. So I ended up with "Welcome" in my JS page. It was completely willing to replace whatever was on that page with Welcome.

Also, is it smart enough to switch between {{welcome}} and {{welcomeip}}? Will (Talk - contribs) 04:27, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the new version you just mentioned, I might be interested. However, I was content with the auto welcome as it was -- provided it only activated for empty User Talk links. Will (Talk - contribs) 05:22, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No. While I did describe that in the main scripts page, what I described as happening when I tested your existing AutoWelcome script works -- provided it only activated for empty User Talk links. Supposedly that script doesn't activate until a tab is clicked. However, what I saw today was the script was always adding {{welcome}} to every page you edit. No tab required. Restrict that to empty User Talk pages, and you might get it to work. As such, you would save room in the watchlist and have it work when I link to something like User Talk:No User Here. Will (Talk - contribs) 05:30, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see that as a concern. However, what you described is better than nothing and better than the bug I encountered. Will (Talk - contribs) 05:42, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I almost forgot: The script wasn't signing its posts. ~~~~ will do the job. Will (Talk - contribs) 07:31, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can confirm the tab shows up, but I have yet to test it. Also the flashing [welcome] appears on this page in the post I have above. However, it was omitted from My Watchlist and Recent Changes. I can confirm that editing a page no longer causes the script to activate without permission. I plan to eat dinner and then test some more.
Also, how smart is it? Will it choose correctly between {{welcome}} and {{welcomeip}}? Will (Talk - contribs) 01:34, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Requiring users to copy the code is bad as it prevents easy upgrades. I think you should find a way switch to include_module. I thought I could overwrite the options you set with my own code after the module inclusion like I did with Popups and wikEd. But it had no effect.

I do think that Special: should be included. However, if you are unsure, make all namespaces options that can be turned on or off individually. Can you detect which namespaces are out there at runtime? For instance, in the Christian Music wiki at Wikia.com, I was looking at adding special namespaces for specialized functions. The talk pages there would have signatures. Some of those would have redlinked talk links.

Also, what about users that have empty talk pages, but omit the talk page from their sig? That is how MediaWiki configures all signatures by default. (You have to turn Raw Signatures on to get what I use.) So if the sig is simply "User:No User Here", I should get a [welcome] by it. Please note, that the user in question might have a user page. That is irelevant. We are only checking if they have a user talk page, even if that link is missing. One cleavet: Suppose both User Page and User Talk Page links are provided for the same user. I would suggest having "[welcome]" in only location per user per page. In the other locations where links to that user's user page and/or user talk page occur, put a small icon there. That icon might be a stylized W (for welcome).

Also, [welcome] was omited from the preview screen. Will (Talk - contribs) 04:34, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'll upgrade shortly.
It now also adds the link to red link userpages. I guess to see if the talk page already exists you could hover over the link with popups which seems to work for me.
I should note that could only cause more confusion. I think if you are going to include such a feature, you should include the test for the user talk page in the code. Too many users will have one page and not the other. I have seen very few users (out of the total number out there) will have neither.
if it detects the same talk link as a previous user page link, there is no (easy) way to just turn it into a "[w]" or something link.
Actually, what I thought you would implement was a list of user names that you added full welcome links to. If you make that list a hash table (or whatever JS calls hash tables, C++/MFC calls them "maps"), you should get decent performance out of that code.
On a new note, what happens when a user was already welcomed? A few minutes ago, I clicked on a red talk link and proceded to use the new Welcome tab to welcome the user. However, by the time the edit page that activates the welcome script came up, the page was no longer empty. In that short amount of time that it took me to click the tab and for the new page to load, someone had already entered a template that added a section.
In this case, the welcome template could have gone above the older template. However, I think your script, if it can, should check for the word "Welcome" as the first non-whitespace in the existing page. If it finds it, it tells the user that the account in question already has a welcome present. If it finds no welcome on a non-blank page, it asks the user if welcome should be added to the page anyway. If the user says Yes, put the welcome template up top, but don't autosave. That lets the user manually create a section header for the existing code if required.
Am I still making sense? Will (Talk - contribs) 06:05, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like that list part might be the only one you can do. Still, I think you will find many users confused by the other two. You might want a FAQ section on AutoWelcome to help deal with that. Will (Talk - contribs) 06:21, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just tested the new [welcome] link from my watchlist. The script both passed and failed. It did well until it ask if I wanted to add my welcome to a non-blank page. I pressed Cancel -- and it ALWAYS added the template name.
Before that test, I welcomed something like 30-40 users with the welcome tab. That was proving to be very reliable.

Speedy Deletion provides nothing unique

I decided not to use your Speedy Deletion script until it can list with a combobox common templates. Select other, and a box appears that would be comparable to Easy Db's DB (CSD) tab. Select Reason and it would ask for a text reason (for use with {{db}}).

BTW: It might make sense to have the script confirm that the user hit Cancel when you are debugging the script, but normal users will hate it.

Admin CSS List doesn't work for me

I am having problems getting your AdminCSS list to work. I tried both importing the code and copying it to the script. If an error might be appearing my my JSConsole, it would help if you could help filter them down. Will (Talk - contribs) 08:02, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can your tabs be made compatible with Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts/Duplicate tabs at bottom? Will (Talk - contribs) 08:03, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I found a conflict with popups. From my watchlist, if I click a [welcome] link, I commonly get a popup that won't go away unless I refresh the watchlist page. I don't know if it should be considered your bug or Lupin's. Will (Talk - contribs) 02:50, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. I will list it there. I do middle click the [welcome] link. That causes Firefox (1.5.0.8) to open the link in a new background tab. Could that be relevant? Will (Talk - contribs) 03:42, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
