November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Crazy Article

Hello! In the Crazy article users have added songs which are titled "Crazy" only. I agree with them. Since I want to add the songs "Let's Go Crazy" and "Crazy You" by Prince & "(You Drive Me) Crazy" by Britney Spears but since the titles of these songs have other words besides "Crazy" I made a "See also" section in the article. The "See also" section was deleted by user "Fritz Saalfeld"; I wrote in the user's talk page my reasons for adding a "See also" section and the user replied in my talk page his point of view. Could you please give me your opinion about this? Thanks!

Janjua help required

Hey,

You may not remember me, but you were involved in an article dispute a year ago, where your help was much appreciated. I hope you are well. I have a big request for your fair and honest aid. I am currently dealing with a POV'ist on the Tanoli article. He is persistently revert warring to the point I have let this article remain POV even though it has very wierd and unsourced, uncited info (as opposed to the cited and sourced info I initially wrote the article with!). Problem is that he is now trying to revert war on the main page of Janjua where the Tanoli are mentioned as a minor sub tribe. I agree that Tanoli is a now not ethnically linked to Janjuas but there is a portion that claims it (as we Janjuas likewise also acknowledge them) as a paternally linked tribe. He's very stubborn and now becoming quite abusive with personal attacks which are beginning to escalate. Can you help on the Janjua discussion page please? I'm approaching you with a good faith that if I am asked to concede anything, I will gladly accept your opinion/action where offered.--Raja 23:05, 25 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Interview for Wikipedia Weekly?

Hi!

You may or may not be aware of the Wikipedia Weekly podcast, which is now approaching its eighth weekly episode, on which I'm a regular presenter. This episode, we'd like to cover the Esperanza dispute now that the dust has had time to settle, and would very much like for you to come on the show to talk to us about it. We'll also be inviting a few other representatives of Esperanza, and User:Robth to provide an opposing view.

All that would be required are a microphone, a reasonably fast internet connection, and a free copy of Skype. We'll likely be recording at around 1500 UTC on Saturday, although feel free to suggest an alternative time if this wouldn't suit you. You can also join us in #wikipediaweekly on FreeNode prior to the podcast. Thanks for your time, and I hope you can join us on the weekend. :) Daveydweeb (chat/review!) 00:53, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No mic, sorry. — FireFox (talk) 17:06, 30 November 2006

Request for assistance

Hello FireFox, you welcomed me to the Wikipedia a while back and told me to leave a message if I had any concerns. I have come across a page that I feel is probably a hoax. The author has added some references in response to the hoax tagged (which was removed by the auther), but the information is dubious at best. Since you are more experienced, can you please take a look at Michael Muldoon or suggest what steps I should take? Thanks, Shadowin 22:54, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind. I contact someone on MySpace from that area and asked them if a Muldoon played for Ardboe. Sure, enough there had been. Some of the claims seem to be a little strange and outlandish, but I guess it's all within the realm of possibility. Perhaps I was too hotheaded and should have contacted people in the region before questioning the veracity of the article. I'll keep this in mind in the future because the contributor thought I had a vendetta to have it deleted. - Shadowin 00:03, 9 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please learn from your past mistakes

The article Gay Nigger Association of America, which you improperly speedy kept, denying hundreds of thousands of users the chance to have their say, has now been deleted with the endorsment of Jimmy Wales himself. I hope you will reflect on your conduct and resolve not to deny users a chance to express their legitimate opinion in the future. Cloachland 01:57, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The AfD I speedy closed last time was merely weeks after the previous one. That was months ago. I am not here to argue with you, even if you try your utmost hardest to pick one. — FireFox (talk) 18:06, 13 December 2006

Hi Firefox, I've been doing more WP edits lately and need some help. I wonder if you could suggest what should be done with this band article. The article is a mess and the bulk of it (the biography section) was lifted straight from the band's web site (the section header even says so). It's probably a candidate for AfD but I don't want to get people too upset if I can help it. Should I add a copyvio tag? I don't know if it is actually violating the band's copyright, or if they would even care; they're probably happy to have the publicity. I'm beginning to add NPOV, copyedit, advert tags etc. to articles when I think it's appropriate. Is there some tag which means basically "this article is a pile o' crap"; i.e. flags articles of poor quality? I'm not even sure if the article is coherent enough to be described as POV (or advertising); it's just cruft. I could delete the biography section and probably start an edit war or nominate the article for AfD. I would be grateful for your suggestions. MarkBrooks 13:55, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If it's copied straight from a website, it's a copyright violation. Either blank the article and replace with the copyvio tag, or remove the copied bits and leave the rest (assuming not all of it was copied). Hope this helps. — FireFox (talk) 18:08, 13 December 2006
OK then, I'll remove the biography section as it is the main offender. Thanks for your help. MarkBrooks 18:38, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

You have put yourself as interested in helping out atWikiProject on user warnings. We are now at a stage where we are creating the new templates and are wondering if you are still interested? If so please visit the overview page and choose a warning type you wish to work on. There is a base template available here, which you can copy and use to get you started. Have a look through the redirects and see what old templates are affected and incorporate them into the the new system. Anyway, any questions please don't hesitate to give me a shout. 308th Bombardment Wing article

Dear Kevin,

I spotted an error on the 308th Bombardment Wing article. It should be titled "308th Bombardment Group". The 308th Bombardment WING was an organization in the 5th Air Force that fought from New Guinea to the Philippines. My father was in the 308th BW in WWII so I caught the error.
