Kastoria Prefecture (Greek: Νομός Καστοριάς) is one of the fifty-one prefectures (nomoí, singular: nomós) of Greece. Its capital is the city of Kastoria, and its population was estimated at 51,934 inhabitants in the most recent census. The prefecture is situated at the western end of Macedonia in the far north of the country. It borders the prefectures of Florina, Grevena, Kozani and Ioannina. An international border with the Albanian district of Korçë lies on the western edge of the prefecture.

The region is mountainous with a pronounced continental climate, characterised by cold winters and hot summers.

Geography

The mountain ranges includes Grammos and Voio to the southwest and Verno to the northeast.

Population

The prefecture of Kastoria in Ottoman times was the largest part of the sanjak of Kastoria. At that time the region was multiethnic consisting of Albanians, Aromanians, Bulgarians, Greeks, Jews, Serbs and Turks.[1] In the early 20th century the majority of the inhabitants of Kastoria were Greeks, with additional communities of Jews, Turks and the remaining being Albanians, Aromanians and Bulgarians.[2]

In modern times there is a high percentage of Bulgarian speakers in the area.[3]
