This list features the various characters in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series of books.

Main characters

Greg Heffley

Greg Heffley is the main character, narrator, and the protagonist of the series who faces difficulty in middle school. He is a 6th-8th grader goes to an unnamed school and town (the name of the school which was revealed in the movie). He is also the "wimpy kid", as each novel in the series is one of his "diaries". He has a good friendship with Rowley Jefferson (up until the end of the 4th book), although Greg often wonders how the two can possibly be friends. Greg's foibles include being underweight, non-athletic, geeky, infamous, selfish, lazy, and sometimes paranoid. He also has a crush on pretty girls. Many of his teachers hate him because they had his older brother Rodrick as a student, and so these teachers expect Greg to be as bad as his brother. Rowley's father also sees Greg as a bad influence.

In The Last Straw, Greg is revealed to own a pair of backup glasses, which he rarely uses. Greg is also known for starting the comic Zoo-Wee Mama! with help from Rowley; however, he passed on the comic to Rowley, who plagiarizes it. He claims that Greg had nothing to do with the creation of the comic. He is also very uncomfortable around Fregley. Greg is the second-youngest child among his brothers. In The Ugly Truth, he seems to be paranoid, scared, and manipulated often. He is 11 in the first book, 12 in the second and third book, turns 13 in the fourth book, and remains that age in the fifth book. In the film, he is portrayed by Zachary Gordon.

Rowley Jefferson

Rowley Jefferson is Greg's best friend.[1] Rowley is dumb, obese and childish according to Greg. Rowley gets a lot of attention from the girls in his grade only because he is "cute", according to Holly Hills. He and Greg have a fight in Dog Days that leaves them not as friends for almost the whole summer. In spite of everybody's efforts of both boys' parents to bring them closer together, the gulf between the two only worsens, and the ending of Dog Days suggests that Greg may no longer attempt to maintain a friendship with Rowley (leading into the fifth book). Greg is also hoping to share the secret of Rowley eating the Cheese, if Rowley spreads a secret about Greg's embarrassing moment in fifth grade, when he did a handstand in class for a skit, thus slamming his buttocks into the wall, leaving a "butt-print" named "The Heffley Hole".

Rowley has shown to have rather strange interests for his age, as in Rodrick Rules, he likes a singer named "Joshie", and in the same book, DinoBlazer action figures as well (which are supposed to be toys for young boys aged 7). Rowley will appear again in the fifth book, where he is the main antagonist as his disfriendship with Greg continues. Eventually, they make up at the end. He is a replacement for Greg's old friend Ben in the Funbrain version. Greg's illustrations always depict Rowley with his mouth open, except once in the Funbrain version when he's sleeping with Greg (which appeared in the 4th book). In the movie, he is played by Robert Capron. Like Greg, he really hates Fregley.[2][3]

Rodrick Heffley

Rodrick is Greg's older brother and is a major antagonist of the series, since he often blackmails Greg. The best conclusion to this is that Greg took away attention from him when he was born. Rodrick is meaner, lazier, crueler and greedier than Greg. He doesn't talk to Manny, his younger brother much (perhaps because he hates little kids), and is a fan of heavy metal. He is the drummer in a heavy metal band called Loaded Diaper. In the spelling on his van, it is spelt as "Löded Diper". Rodrick tries to annoy and vetoe Greg several times throughout the series.

In Rodrick Rules, he is the main antagonist and constantly bullies Greg, threatening to spill his big secret. Rodrick enjoys sleeping, which is shown when his parents forget to wake him up; consequently, he slept for thirty-six hours straight, not knowing he skipped a day of his life. Rodrick is the only important character to have always-visible eyebrows, giving the appearance of evil during happiness. (mainly, characters' eyebrows appear when they're angry or annoyed.) Rodrick also drives a van with his band's name in giant letters. In the movie, he is portrayed by Devon Bostick.

Frank Heffley

Frank Heffley, is Greg's father. He is very over-possessed, unpredictable, and has a strong interest in U.S. history, especially the American Civil War. Frank is edgy around Rowley, does not appreciate Greg's skill about video games, loathes heavy metal music, dislikes spoiled children (with the exception of Manny), and strongly detests adolescents. He tries to get Greg and Rodrick to exercise (he wants Greg to have a longer life, but Greg thinks otherwise, resulting in his non-athleticness). He is very serious about things, such as when he threatens to send Greg to military school.

Frank is also a hard worker, and has a poor relationship with Rodrick, and a could-be-better relationship with Greg, because they virtually cannot relate to each other at all. In The Last Straw, he is featured as the main antagonist, as he is trying to toughen up Greg up and threatening to send him to military school if he does not shape up. Frank is also an obese junk-food addict, and sometimes steals Greg's lunch snacks, which he (Greg) lives on at lunchtime, which Susan tries to resist due to Frank's diabetes. However, Greg and Frank grow together in Dog Days, first after Frank rethinks sending Greg to Spag Union in the end of The Last Straw, but more significantly, when Greg mentions that he and Frank strongly dislike the comic Li'l Cutie. In The Ugly Truth, it is mentioned that he hates the commercial for Peachy Breeze ice cream. In the movie, he is played by Steve Zahn.

Susan Heffley

Susan Heffley (Ann Heffley in the Funbrain version) is Greg's mother who is described (by Greg) as almost nothing more than an annoying pain (though she is actually quite kind and caring). She tries hard to be a good, loving, dedicated mother and wife, but she constantly and inadvertently does something wrong in her efforts. Susan apparently knows very little about children and teenagers of the modern age, and her ignorance often bothers Greg and Rodrick. She constantly tries to get Greg to enjoy reading, to pull the family together, and to help Greg and Frank to accustom themselves to the music of Rodrick's band, but none of her plans ever seem to work. She often uses "lame old-school" tactics.

She and her husband pay far more attention to Manny than their other two sons, (mostly Susan) giving their youngest everything he asks for. Susan humiliates Rodrick on stage during the school talent show in Rodrick Rules, in which she runs on stage during Rodrick's drum solo and does an embarrassing dance, which is close-up recorded by a cameraman who was supposed to be videotaping the show, and is released on the Internet as the "Dancing Mom" video, which Rodrick gets angry at, saying that he "now has nothing to send to the record companies", and leads Rodrick in a deep depression (due to heavy embarrassment) to the point where he hides in the basement, waiting for everything to end. Susan often accidentally gets Greg into conflicts when she is trying to help or salvage a situation, resulting in chaos. According to Book 1, she allowed Rodrick to start his band and bought his first drum set. She is also the main antagonist in Dog Days. In the movie, she is played by Rachael Harris.

Manny Heffley

Manny is Greg's younger brother and is even more spoiled than both Rodrick and Greg combined, is a tattletale and loves candy. Manny is extremely selfish, mean, bratty, greedy and phobic, mainly because his parents spoil him way more than Rodrick and Greg. He is not caring at all for his brothers and panicking when he thinks something might harm him in any way. Manny isn't good at potty training because of Uncle Joe (see Uncle Joe's section). When Greg has a sleepover, Manny always interferes, often causing Rowley to go home early. Manny also gets many rights that Greg didn't have when he was his age, such as bringing toys to church to pass the time, which means Frank and Susan treat Manny like he's super-special (mainly Susan). From the second to the fourth book, he plays the secondary antagonist.

According to the first book's illustration of Manny sitting on his plastic potty eating cereal, Manny's favorite show is Sesame Street. He goes to day care because he isn't properly potty trained yet. Manny has cried in the first four books except number five. In the books, Manny is an extreme tattletale, including tattling on Greg for stuff Manny saw before he could talk, including telling on Greg for breaking a sliding glass window two years before. This also implies that he did not learn to talk until he was at least two years old. In the first book he is most likely two for the first two months and turns three in November. He turns four two months in Rodrick Rules and will turn 5 in the The Ugly Truth. Manny's appearance somewhat resembles a bucktoothed alligator, possibly because it emphasizes his brattiness. However, his appearance changed strikingly for the film, because is not a single child in the world that looks like Manny in the books. In the movie, he is played by twins Connor and Owen Fielding.

Secondary characters

Fregley

Fregley, known as Fregly in the FunBrain version, is a repulsive, disgusting, dorky, and weird kid. In the movie, he is ranked as 201 on the list of kids at Greg's school, which contains only two-hundred students, and is listed in the order in which they are popular. In Dog Days, it is revealed that he is sent home once every month for his hygiene. Greg is very uncomfortable around Fregley, thinking that he is a freak. Every time Greg walks by his front yard he tries to talk Greg into weird and gross topics such as his secret freckle or how his scab smells. Fregley never leaves his front yard during the summer, and Greg writes in his diary, I think his parents have an electrical fence or something. In The Last Straw, he ruins a perfect moment between Greg and Holly Hills by a sugar rush. He appears in all of the books except Rodrick Rules. In the film, he is portrayed by Grayson Russell.

Patty Farrell

Patty Farrell is a girl in Greg’s grade who has a "nerd" look and complains whenever anybody "messes up, and makes her look stupid". She is one of the meanest characters in the series. In the first book, Greg finds a way to cheat on his state capitals test by sitting near the map of the United States, but Patty ruins his plan by telling the teacher to cover the map, causing Greg to fail the test. She plays Dorothy in the school musical The Wizard of Oz, and Greg, who plays a tree, throws apples to get back at her for making him fail the test. Several other characters throw apples at her as well, including the boys who play the other trees and Toto the dog. In Rodrick Rules, she is said to be tap-dancing in the winter talent show.

In The Last Straw, when the teacher leaves the room, Patty is left in charge. Greg writes that she is very strict when in control, letting no one out of the classroom, even if a fellow student has to use the bathroom. According to Greg, she can't see one foot in front of her without her glasses and is practically blind without them, although in the movie, she doesn't wear them. In the movie, Greg has to wrestle her instead of Fregley after gaining 10 pounds, making Greg's popularity quickly drop slightly, and she wins. She will even sue people if she doesn't get what she wants. In the movie, she is played by Laine MacNeil.

Holly Hills

Holly Hills is a girl that Greg has a crush on in The Last Straw and the sister of Heather Hills. Holly is the fourth most popular girl in Greg's grade, and as Greg says, "is the fourth prettiest girl in the class, but the top three all have boyfriends". Greg tries to get a good moment with her at the Valentine's Day dance, but Fregley ruins it by running in between them due to a sugar rush. At the end of the same book, Greg gives up on her because she mistakes him for Fregley, which he takes as an insult. She does not appear in the first movie, but will make an appearance in the second Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie. Holly Hills plays as a kind, beautiful, charming, athletic, thin, funny, and thoughtful person. In the second movie, she will be played by Peyton R. List.

Chirag Gupta

Chirag Gupta is a minor character and Greg's classmate. He is an Indian-American, is presumably the shortest person in his class, and according to Greg, he's hardly wimpier than Greg. People often take advantage of his small size with pranks. One example is the Invisible Chirag joke, where even though Chirag moved back, Greg and his other friends still pretend he was gone. And also, in The Last Straw, Greg and the others decide to play a joke on Chirag to think he lost his hearing, but he immediately found out what was going on and told the teacher.

He does not appear in Dog Days, but his major appearance is in Rodrick Rules and talked about in Diary of a Wimpy Kid and The Last Straw. He has a small afro in the Funbrain version, and tells Greg the story behind the Cheese Touch in the movie. He is played by Karan Brar in the movie, where he has a more major role in the movie than he does in the books. He also made an appearance in The Ugly Truth, where he explains to Greg about the futileness of having a maid.

Collin Lee

Collin Lee is Greg's so-called "backup friend". He is overweight and has a large nose in the book. Despite being Greg's back-up friend, Collin dumped him for Rowley in book 1. In the movie (where he is portrayed by Alex Ferris and looks much different) he is simply called Collin. In a scene, Collin can be seen giving Rowley an ice-cream cone. He only appears in book 1, but he is mentioned in Dog Days. The Funbrain version has a similar character who is also called Collin, but looks different.

Alex Aruda

Alex Aruda is one of the smartest people in Greg's school. He has big glasses and a large afro. According to Greg, he is smart because his last name begins with an 'A', and the teachers call on the first alphabetical names the most, so these students end up being the smartest. Greg mentions that there was one person who's name wasn't at the beginning of the alphabet but was the smartest kid in the class. Greg usually copies off Alex's math test when Alex is finished. Despite being intellectually smart, Alex is oblivious to what goes on around him. He puts his test papers on his desk where anybody can read them and he didn't realize that his class had been kept inside for recess for three days until Greg told him. In The Last Straw, Mrs. Craig's dictionary is missing, and it turns out that Alex had taken it to study it, which is fitting to how he is portrayed: nerdy and studious. He does not appear in the movie, but might appear in the 2nd one.

Trista

Trista is a girl that moves to Greg's neighborhood in the final pages of The Last Straw. She develops a crush for Greg and Rowley, more for Greg even though Rowley is "cute". Not much is known about her except that Greg seems to have a crush on her, as well as Rowley. In Dog Days, she is invited by Rowley and Greg to the country club, and meets a lifeguard at the country club pool, where she forgets about Greg and Rowley, who invited her in the first place. Greg then says she was a waste of his time. She was not Greg's girlfriend in The Ugly Truth as rumored, but she probably will be soon.

Marty Porter

Marty Porter is a boy who runs for Treasurer, along with Greg in book one. He apparently had head lice in second grade, according to one of Greg's voting posters.

Darren Walsh

The first kid to touch the cheese and to get the cheese touch. Only appearing in the first book, he is played by Harrison Houde in the movie. According to Greg's popularity chart, he is ranked at 198 and 24.

Archie Kelly, Marty, & Rodney James

The two trees besides Greg in the Wizard of Oz school play and the shrub. Not much is known about the trees, but in the movie, Marty is revealed to be the name of the other tree. Archie Kelly is the other tree, and in the book he chips a tooth after tripping over Rodney James. During the play, Manny shouts "Bubby" when he sees Greg on stage, and Greg pretends Manny was talking to Archie. Rodney James doesn't really play a big role in the movie, or the book. He sneaks a Nintendo DS in his costume. On the night of the play, he has stage fright. He wears glasses in the book. but just like Patty, he does not wear them in the movie.

Mackey Creavey and Manuel Gonzales

Mackey and Manuel are Greg's soccer teammates. The three of them never got called in to the game. On a cold night they had a game and the coach let them go in there car with heat and a TV, Greg's dad doesn't let him leave for "team support". The three brought handheld games to a soccer game and only played for about 20 minutes before being called on. They only appear in The Last Straw and are also in Greg's class, but they also made a cameo appearance in Dog Days.

Corey Lamb

Corey is one of Greg's classmates. In the third book, he grabs the dictionary from Alex Aruda, trying to put it away, and gets caught by Mrs. Craig. According to Greg, he's smart and uses "big words".

George Fleer, Nicky Wood, Christopher Brownfeilds and Tyson Sanders

George, Nicky, Chrisropher and Tyson are all of Greg's teamates for the lock in. in the game Guess Who they are convicted of taking a picture of a butt and run and hide then get caught and the teachers find out it was Tyson's elbow. George has a wicked outie as Greg mentioned. Nicky is covered in so many freckles that not one part of him isn't covered. Christopher and Tyson would be Greg's ( so called best friend replacement ) but they each have problems. Christopher is more of a summer friend and Tyson pulls his pants all the way down in the urinal.

Greg's teachers

Mrs. Craig

Mrs. Craig is one of Greg's 7th grade English teachers. She appears at times throughout the series. Her first appearance is in book one. In this book she catches Greg and Rowley with a CD player, and thinking that they were actually listening to music, she scolds them, saying that rock 'n roll would damage their brains. Mrs. Craig makes another appearance in The Last Straw, when the large dictionary that she keeps on her desk goes missing and she does not let the class go outside for recess, until the dictionary is returned.

It turns out that Alex Aruda had been studying it the whole time, and was oblivious to Mrs. Craig wanting it back. Corey Lamb, who is sick of staying inside, takes it from Alex to put it back on Mrs. Craig's desk, but Mrs. Craig sees him do so and thinks he was the one who stole it in the first place. She punishes him by making him stay inside for three weeks instead of going to recess. She could be teaching English, as the dictionary in The Last Straw might hint this.

In the Funbrain version, she is a recess coordinator.

Mr. Roy

Mr. Roy is Greg's vice-principal who only appears in the first two books of the series. He is sentimental, giving a pat on the back and a lollipop to those who had to see him for misbehavior after he is done lecturing them. Greg has been to see him twice: first because of the "Invisible Chirag" joke and second for getting into trouble for "sporting gang colors". When Greg is campaigning to become treasurer in his school government, Mr. Roy takes down the campaign posters that Greg makes against his opponent Marty Porter because they are "fabrications".

Mr. Ray

Mr. Ray is the detention moderator. In The Last Straw, he doesn't let the students do anything (including homework, which Greg thinks the guys who were there with him could use the extra time) in detention except sit and wait for the end. When Mr. Ray catches Leon Ricket's finger in Greg's ear [after a wet willy], he tells Leon that he will be in big trouble if he sees him doing anything bothersome again. Then Greg fools Mr. Ray into thinking that Leon hit him. Leon is given an extra day of detention and has to stay an extra thirty minutes that day.

Mr. Ira

Mr. Ira is the leader of the comics section of the school paper. During Greg Heffley's Creighton The Cretin's only day, Mr. Ira says that he made some "minor" changes to the strip. In reality, he changed the whole thing, causing everyone to think Greg is a teacher's pet and ruining Greg's plans of becoming a celebrity through his comics. He is also a Geography teacher as shown in book 1, where he takes a Geography test.

Mr. Winskey is said to be the comics guider in the Funbrain version, but appearantly that isn't true in the real version.

Mr. Winsky

Mr. Winsky is the Safety Patrol teacher. His first name is Bertrand in the movie. According to close-ups in The Wimpy Kid Movie Diary, he was once a Safety Patrol regular. In the movie, he is played by Rob LaBelle.

Mr. Huff

Mr. Huff is Greg's history teacher. In Rodrick Rules, He seats Greg next to his desk because Rodrick had the same teacher when he was in middle school. Mr. Huff once assigned Rodrick to write a poem about the 1900s, and when Greg receives the assignment, he buys Rodrick's old paper. But Greg did not realize that Mr. Huff gave Rodrick an "F" for his paper, so Greg got an "0" because of that.

Mr. Underwood

Mr. Underwood is Greg's gym teacher. He only appears in Book 1 where he taught the kids about wrestling and Book 3. He does not appear in the film, but is instead replaced by Coach Malone (see below). Mr. Underwood also takes Phys Ed grades during the Valentine's Day dance in The Last Straw.

Greg's uncles, aunts, and grandparents

Gramma

Greg's maternal grandmother seems to favor Manny the best, since she has photographs of him all around the house though she constantly denies this fact by saying "I love all my grandchildren the same". One time when Greg was six, Grandma would not let him have ice cream before dinner, so he wrote her a note saying "I hate you Gramma" which Grandma placed on the wall and held over Greg's head ever since. Greg still spells Grandma "Gramma" today. She appears in The Last Straw when Greg tries to 'escape' his dad (because he got bad report cards) and follows Gramma to a Bingo game. She appears again in Dog Days when Greg and Rowley are trying to run a lawn service. She lives on the same street as Greg and Rowley's first customer and is imitated by Greg for their references. She also loves reading tabloids (which when Susan calls her and she doesn't pick up the phone, making Susan rush to her place to check on her, but she tells Susan that "Cordless telephones erase the memory of the elderly." because she believed an article in the New York Times, a trait she enjoys sharing with Greg).

Grandpa

Greg's paternal grandfather; he is an outgoing person. He is shown to wear a tie (shown in The Ugly Truth) He tends to baby Greg in some ways such as, reading him bedtime stories. Greg has said in his diary that his grandfather hasn't babysitted him and Rodrick for years.

Uncle Joe

Frank's younger brother, with whom Uncle Joe has a sibling rivalry with him. When Manny started potty training, Uncle Joe insisted that there was a "potty monster" about to get him, causing Manny to fear using the bathroom, so that meant Frank had to change his diapers for a longer time. Greg says that he could hear Frank cursing to Joe when he changed more diapers from Manny because of it. Also, Uncle Joe's children call their uncle "Aunt Fwank", which Frank swears he told them to do on purpose, but Susan thinks it's cute. In Dog Days, Greg mentions that he tried to make Uncle Joe to convince Frank to get a dog, but that did not work out. He also mentions that his dog, Killer ate most of Greg's birthday cake. There's a chance his real name is Joseph.

Uncle Charlie

Greg's uncle Charlie is described by Greg as a very wealthy man being able to get him anything he wants for Christmas or his birthday. Ironically, the few times throughout the series that Uncle Charlie brought Greg gifts, he is only disappointed by what he brings. A few examples are a 8x10 picture of him, a "Laundry Hoop", and Wonder Woman Underoos. In Dog Days, it's said that he has a recliner which he practically lives in. Uncle Charlie looks a lot like Grandpa. He also talks about tennis a lot to add to the disfortune. Book 5 seems to imply that Uncle Charlie is not married (or at least divorced Aunt Loretta) as he is on the bachelor list at Uncle Gary's fourth wedding

Aunt Loretta

Greg's ugly looking aunt. Not much is known about her, but some say that she got divorced by Uncle Charlie. Mainly appearing in Rodrick Rules at the Thanksgiving dinner, she also appeared a couple times in Do It Yourself Book. She may be based on Aunt Cakey in the Funbrain version. She looks more elderly than Gramma. She appeared a couple times in The Ugly Truth.

Aunt Brenda

One of Greg's aunts, only appearing in Dog Days when she gave Greg a birthday card saying: "A special greeting, And a "how do you do?" For a special nephew- By golly thats you!" She might be Uncle Joe's wife.

Gammie

Greg's great grandmother and the head off the Heffley family, only appearing in The Ugly Truth. She also has a collection of lego that she glued together because of mess. She is a trickster and knows alot because of "experience".

Great Grandpa Chester

Husband of Gammie and Greg's deceased great grandfather.

Uncle Gary

Greg's uncle who has been married four times. All of his wives divorced him as soon as they found out about his financial situation and job. 1st wife: Linda 2nd wife: Charlene 3rd wife: Lydia New wife: Sonja But again Sonja and Gary divorce because of a story Gary's best friend Leonard says. "Gary took Sonja to a baseball game when they were still dating but he was planning on breaking up with Sonja and dating her sister. Then a blimp flew by with a sign that said "Marry me Sonja?". Gary didn't pay for that blimp but Sonja thought he did so she said "Yes". So Gary just went with it. Greg said he's pretty sure they'll be back next year for Uncle Gary's 5th wedding.

Aunt Dorothy

She is only metioned in The Ugly Truth kissing Greg full on the lips.

Other Aunts & Uncles

Aunt Patricia and Uncle Tony, Great Uncle Arthur, Great Aunt Reba, Uncle Lawrence, Aunt Mary, Aunt Donna, Uncle Peg

Other Cousins

Benjy (Patricia and Tony's son), Terrance, Byron

Rowley's parents

Mr. Jefferson

Mr. Jefferson is Rowley's father. He is a lot more shrill, angry, yelling a lot, irritable and strict than Frank, and is a rich businessman. He is the strictest father in the book series so far. He won't let Greg or Rowley play any violent video games. In Dog Days, it is revealed that his first name is Robert. Also in Dog Days, it's shown that Mr. Jefferson had a close bond with Rowley when Greg writes that "Me and Dad might not have one of those close father-son relationships, but that's fine by me. I've learned there's such a thing as TOO close."

He shows little interest in sports until in that book, where he is found playing tennis with Rowley and golf with a caddy. Greg doesn't like Rowley's father, and he explains it profoundly in his journal. For example, when Greg had some complaints about the "quality of service" (such as the temperature in the sauna and about the drinks) for solving to Rowley's father, Greg is kicked out forever, showing that Mr. Jefferson is short-tempered. Mr. Jefferson, overall, is regarded as a controversial figure in the book. His actual profession is unknown, but Greg writes "I think he is an architect or something." because he misunderstood. Openly showing his rivalry with Rowley's father, Greg parodies a movie he watched with Rowley about kids making a language that adults do not understand, and makes up his own language. In front of Rowley's father, Greg says in his language: "Your-pa dad-pa smells-pa like-pa a woman-pa!" Greg is then forced to go home, and Greg questions how Rowley's father cracked his code.

Mrs. Jefferson

Mrs. Jefferson is Rowley's mother. She seems to often be concerned about Rowley such as when he broke his big toe after Greg put one of Frank's dumbbells under a pillow that Rowley kept kicking at Greg's sleepover. She also had Greg apologize to her for what he did to her son. despite this, Mrs. Jefferson always enjoys Greg's company with Rowley. Her first name is hinted to be Linda in the Funbrain version.

In the film, Rowley's mother is played by Robert Capron's real mother, according to the movie tie-in.

Animals

Sweetheart (Sweetie)

Sweetheart, or Sweetie for short, is the family puppy who only appears in Dog Days. Susan impulsively gives the dog a female name, not realizing that it is male. Greg wants to name him "Ripjaw" or "Shredder", Manny wants to name him an animal name, in Greg's example, Elephant or Zebra. "Zeeb for short!". Rodrick agrees with Manny's animal name idea, saying they could name him Turtle, in Greg's illustration Rodrick says "Turd for short". However, Sweetie seems happy with the name they gave him and is very affectionate toward Greg's mom, even though she barely pays the slightest bit of attention to him.

Frank bought Sweetie after he found out what happened to his own dog when he was younger. Sweetie causes trouble to the family despite Greg always wanting a dog. Sweetie ruins Greg's life along the way, where he constantly barks at the TV, except for a commercial with gophers popping up, and constantly annoying Greg by sleeping on his bed and licking himself loudly, and near the end of Dog Days, he is given to Grandma for company after her dog Henry dies. On his dog bowl, Rodrick spelled his name "Sweaty", where Greg explains that's what they get for sending out the family's worst speller. He does not appear in the movie, but he also appears in the Funbrain version. It is unknown what breed he is and the title of the fourth book could mean him.

Greg and Rodrick's fish

The two fish that Greg and Rodrick get in Dog Days. Rodrick picks out a piranha-like fish, and Greg picks out an angelfish when his mother takes the boys to a pet shop for a "makeup gift". Later, Greg's fish is eaten by Rodrick's fish when his mother puts Rodrick's fish in the same fish bowl as Greg's fish. They appear in the Funbrain version, along with one for Manny as well.

The Cat

The Heffleys had an unnamed cat who appeared at least once in Rodrick Rules, in which Manny witnessed Greg shoot it with a water pistol. This pet was never mentioned or appeared in the rest of the books, thus it is thought to be sold or died.

Princess

Princess is the family dog to the Fullers family that only appeared in Rodrick Rules. The Fullers would charge Greg $5.00 a day that he would watch Princess, but she was "gun shy" about peeing near strangers, so Greg would put her back inside. But the next day she would make a mess in the house, so Greg would clean up her mess every other day. One day when he had all of his supplies to clean up the mess, the Fullers came home a day early, and Greg did not get paid a single penny.

Henry

Henry was Gramma's dog only mentioned in Dog Days, but has never been seen. In Dog Days, Greg says that Henry died, explaining why Sweetie is taking over to Gramma's near the end of Dog Days.

Killer

Uncle Joe's dog that only appeared in Dog Days at Greg's birthday. Killer ruined Greg's birthday when he ate most of Greg's birthday cake, and that backfires when he barfs up the candles. He could be a rottweiler as illustrated by Greg and is big enough to carry Uncle Joe's small children on his back. He is also the reason Greg wanted a dog so badly.

Nutty

Frank's puppy that he had when he was a kid. Only heard of in Dog Days. One day he disappeared and ran off to a butterfly farm (That's what Grandpa tells Frank.) What actually happened was that Grandpa ran over Nutty by accident. When Grandpa tells Frank that story, he drives the Heffleys home and buys Sweetie. (In the Funbrain version, Nutty is a cat who froze to death because Grandpa left him outside. This appears in a Zoo-Wee-Mama! comic in Do-It-Yourself-Book, but with different characters.)

Other

The Snellas

The Snellas are a family that lives in the Heffleys' neighborhood, and they have a lot of children, all of whom are male and have names beginning with the letter S. Five of the children's names are (from oldest to youngest): Shawn, Shane, Sam, Scott, and Seth. In The Last Straw, it is revealed that each Snella child has a half birthday party in which the adults perform funny stunts, in which no baby has laughed once, according to Greg.

In Rodrick Rules, when Greg has to prevent himself from lying, when Shawn Snella tells him he wants to be a professional basketball player, Greg responds, "Neither of your parents are over 5' 2" and you're the only 200 pound 6-year-old I know".

Mr. Snella then sends the videos to "America's Funniest Families", a spoof and parody of America's Funniest Home Videos, and has never won anything (though they may have this time, due to Greg's embarrassing moment at the end of The Last Straw). In the Funbrain version, their last name is Smeldy.

It was explained in The Ugly Truth that they moved away over Greg's summer vacation because at Seth's half-birthday party, Greg was going to eat some deviled eggs at the party. But because of how revolting they were, Greg tossed them into one of the Snella's plastic plants. Overtime, the smell started to really annoy the Snella's, and since they couldn't trace it, they moved out.

Scotty Douglas

Scotty is a first grader from Rowley's karate class. He was going to do a magic act in the Talent Show with Rowley as his assistant, but after Greg breaks Rowley's big toe, Greg has to fill in for Rowley. Greg complains about being a magician's assistant to Scotty, but Greg's mother tells Scotty's mother that Greg would be happy to replace Rowley.

In the tryouts, their act is so bad they are the only one not to make the auditions. He does not appear in the movie. He has a remarkably similar appearance to Greg's comic character, Creighton The Cretin, except Creighton's eyes are wide open and Scotty's eyes are beady just like all the other characters that don't wear glasses.

Benny Wells

A huge kid in Greg's wrestling class who is illustrated to have a big nose, beady eyes and can bench press 250 pounds. Greg says that he is afraid of wrestling Benny, which might refer to his writing about getting twisted into a pretzel for the whole wrestling unit.

Mr. Litch

Mr. Litch is Greg's very tough soccer coach. He was the reason Rodrick never does sports anymore, telling him that he needs a haircut. Greg gets in trouble with Mr. Litch many times since he is lazy and rude. Greg and the other kids once were going to run at him with their buttocks sticking out (since Mr. Litch usually tells them to "get your butts over here!"), but Greg was the only one to do so, with the others hanging him out to dry. Another time, with Greg in the front and two other kids in the back, one of them honked the car at Mr. Litch and made it look like Greg did it. According to Greg, he is a type of drill sergeant who likes to yell and shout at people a lot. Note that he is called Mr. Keith in the Funbrain version.

Leland

Leland lives next door to Rowley and is his current babysitter. However, in the "Do-it-Yourself Book", it shows that he lives on Pleasant Street, near Holly Hills. Leland only appears in Rodrick Rules, when he teaches Greg and Rowley how to play "Magick and Monsters", which is a game based on several real-life games including Dungeons & Dragons. Rodrick later tells Greg that Leland's the "biggest nerd in his school". In the "Winter Talent Show", Leland does a ventriloquist act and wins the grand prize, over Rodricks band performance, causing Greg to agree that Leland may be a huge nerd. In the online book, Greg states that Leland owns nearly every single video game made.

The Muddy Hand

The Muddy Hand is a disembodied hand made of mud that appears in one of Rodrick's horror movies entitled "Hello, You're Dead". It is a possible parody of The Hand. In it, the Muddy Hand travels the countryside looking for victims to strangle and murder (nobody knows why he kills people), and the last person who sees it is always the next victim. The film freaks Greg out when at the end, the Muddy Hand strangles its last victim and walks straight at the screen, implying that the viewer was its next victim. This makes Greg and Rowley paranoid that the Muddy Hand is out to kill them. It was only mentioned in Dog Days, where it played an important role. Greg once played a prank to make Rowley think the Muddy Hand came in a tent with him (which backfired severely).

Heather Hills

Heather Hills is Holly Hills' older sister who appeared in Rodrick Rules and Dog Days. She is in Rodrick’s grade, and Greg has a tiny crush on her. She is also alphabetically put after Rodrick. She was once Rowley's baby-sitter until Rowley's parents switched her with Leland. According to Greg, Heather Hills is the 2nd prettiest girl at Crossland High School, after Holly Hills. Apparently, she is in the same grade as Rodrick, with her yearbook picture being next to his in their sophomore year. Greg always tries to make it to Rowley's house before story time when Heather babysits. Greg is very disappointed when Rowley's parents replaced her with Leland. In Dog Days, she works as a life guard at the town pool, and Greg stands by her whenever she's on duty. Greg stops this when one of the kids at the pool throws up, and Greg leaves so Heather can clean it up. He says that "besides, those long-distance relationships never work anyway".

The Cheese and The Cheese Touch

The sinister and moldy piece of swiss cheese that lays on the blacktop of the playground that started the Cheese Touch, a parody to the Cooties but more intense. The Movie Diary states that it is the main antagonist of the film. Though it only appeared in the first book, however the cheese touch goes on into the second book. When a kid gets the cheese touch, there stuck with it unless they pass it on to someone else. The only way to protect yourself is by crossing their fingers. In the first book, the teenagers made Rowley eat the Cheese, which was unknown to everyone except Greg. Once the kids noticed that it was gone, Greg accused himself for getting rid of it, and the kids ran away due to the fact that he had the Cheese Touch. In the movie, it was a digital graphic due to the mold becoming more disgusting over time.

The Whirley Street Kids

The group of mean bullies that live in the other neighborhood next to Greg's. Greg and Rowley try to prank them, but they always get pranked back instead. In the first book, they ambushed Greg and Rowley after Greg's dad destroyed their giant snowball. In The Last Straw, Greg and Rowley's bus schedule was "rezoned" so the Whirley Street Kids made monkey noises as they passed, which bothers Greg because "that's exactly what we used to do we passed them." In the "Do It Yourself Book", it's revealed which neighborhood they come from!

Background Characters

Many unnamed characters in the books appear but usually aren't named.

Characters in other versions

There are other versions of the Wimpy Kid series as well besides the book.

In the Funbrain version

The series started as an online book.

Lori Matthews

Lori is apparently Piper's older sister. She is very similar to Heather Hills. Greg describes as the prettiest of the Matthews' girls. She is Rowley's babysitter and always tells him a story on the couch in story time but Greg's always comes and sits on the couch with her instead of Rowley. Leland replaced her because Rowley's parents caught her smoking by their house.

Piper Matthews

Piper is the character that Holly Hills is based on. She does many of the things as Holly does in The Last Straw. For example, she is at the roller skating rink, and is the girl that Greg has a crush on. Unlike Holly, she comes from a large family of only girls, while there are only two members revealed in the books. Another example is that she goes to a different school, Greg only knows her by church, and she also has a boyfriend, as shown at the Couples Dance at the roller skating rink. She has a sister named Lori who is similar to Heather Hills.

Kenny Keith

Kenny is the son of Mr. Keith, Greg's soccer coach on the online version. It is shown that he holds a grudge against Greg for blowing the big soccer match. He might be on the swim team since Greg said half of the soccer team was on swim team. When Greg is in detention he sits in front of Kenny who flicks him, spits on him, and giving him wet willies. After this he gets two more weeks of detention. He also gets revenge on Greg by pushing him in a slush puddle. He is in the book but he isn't the coach's son and he gets Greg in trouble in the book.

Benjamin "Ben"

Ben is Greg's former best friend. He goes to school with Piper Matthews. He apparently moved to Piscataway. When Greg and Ben were around they were a comedy duo. Even in church when "Peace to be with you" came up, Greg and Ben said "Peas be with you". Once Ben even brought peas to church. Rowley is Greg's replacement friend.

Mr. Swann

He is a resident who is possibly friends with Greg's dad. He is very similar to Mr. Warren. He is similar by having 3 athletic children the same ages as the Heffley boys. Greg's dad carpools by their house and always sees the three kids playing sports or working out in the front yard. He is the reason that Greg's dad wants to send him to Bishop Garrigan High School since Mr. Swann said he has a son named Dan who goes to the high school. He says it makes men out of boys.

Stinky Williams

Stinky Williams is an underweight kid in Greg's grade. He is very smelly and stinky, hence his name and is so smelly that he made Greg's singlet and possibly Greg smell. Because of this Greg says he is one of those kids who live up to their name. He wrestles Greg at the wresling unit in the FunBrain version.

Mr. Peters

Mr. Peters is the botany teacher at Greg's school. After Greg is kicked out of independent study he goes to his class for third period. Rodrick used to have him as his botany teacher, but he always fell asleep in his class. The reason is that Mr. Peters talks slow and quiet so Rodrick can't stop himself from zonking out. Greg's dad apparently had Mr. Peters (who fell asleep in his class too) possibly meaning he is very old. Greg has also fallen asleep in his class too. He always singles Greg out of class to answer questions. Greg says he is like one of those hypnotizing snakes. Mr. Peters finally catches Greg and sends him to the front, but it backfires and Greg sleeps in peace.

Aunt Cakey

Aunt Cakey is Greg's aunt who hates kids very much. Aunt Loretta from the books is probably based on her. She is also immune to Manny's act. Greg thinks he might be responsible for Cakey hating children since he touched the iron after Cakey told him not to. She has no toys except one huge block of LEGO pieces that she glued together. She is also Greg's mom's sister. It is unknown if she comes to the Heffley's house for Christmas since she is not seen or mentioned during Christmas.

Herbie Reamer

Herbie Reamer is a feelingless bully who hangs out in the woods near Greg's house. He's been around long enough that he terrorized Rodrick and his friends when they were Greg's age. He is shown to be a legend. When Greg and Rowley were going to be puinshed by Herbie by being forced to eat the cheese, Greg said that it would make you appreciate how he got such a nasty reputation in the first place. Greg hides Reamer's body in black, possibly because Herbie's body could look scary or disturbing.

Herbie's Goons

Herbie's goons, who are also feelingless, assist him in terrifying innocent children who didn't do anything to him. They and Herbie replace the Halloween teenagers from the book during the scene when Rowley ate the Cheese. However, unlike their master, Greg shows the goons' bodies rather than hiding them in black.

In the film

These are the characters that are only in the movie.

Angie Steadman

Angie Steadman is a 7th grader and a film-only character played by Chloë Moretz. She dislikes school because she mentioned it as an "intellectial wasteland"; however, she works for the school paper and tries guiding Greg through middle school throughout Greg's year.

There is a possibility that Greg has a crush on her due to the fact that he gets nervous whenever he's around her.

While Angie doesn't appear in the books, Jeff Kinney drew a few illustrations of her for the movie.

Coach Malone

Coach Malone is Greg's gym teacher in the film, replacing Mr. Underwood. He introduces a game called "gladiator" in the beginning and then leads the wrestling unit. He also appears when he stops the teenagers who made Rowley eat the Cheese. He is played by Andrew McNee.

Pete Hosey

Pete Hosey was one of the teenagers who was chasing Greg and Rowley on Halloween. He seems to be the leader. Coach Malone was the only one who recognized him. In the book, there is a student in Greg's grade who had to sit in front of him named Chris Hosey. It is possible that Chris is Pete's younger brother. He forced Rowley to eat the Cheese. He is played by Nicholas Carey.[4]

Quentin

One of the bullies in Greg's school. He witnesed Rowley say "Hey Greg, want to come over and play?" Greg imagined 20 years later, Quentin will be working for him.

The Devil Worshipers

Rodrick made them up when he told Greg and Rowley a ghost story to prepare for Halloween. When Greg and Rowley were returning from Halloween, they heard laughter that they thought was from the Devil Worshipers. The laughter turned out to be Fregley in a donkey-unicorn costume. Although, Pete Hosey's friend has also knew about the Devil Worshipers. Greg and Rowley also had to go in the woods to run away from the teenagers.
