Untitled

Love?[6] is the name of the upcoming seventh studio album from American R&B singer Jennifer Lopez. Originally scheduled for release in January 2010, and April 2010[7] the album is now scheduled for release sometime in 2010.[1]

The album sees Lopez return to her trademark dance pop genre with producers such as Darkchild and Danja amongst others. Writing for the album began during Lopez's 2007—2008 pregnancy and recording has been on-going since 2008. The album will be preceded by two singles, the first being "Louboutins," was released in the U.S on December 21, 2009 and debuted on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart at number 50 over a month after release.

Background

In February 2009, the first of several new recordings, "Hooked on You" was circulated on the internet which confirmed rumours that Lopez was back in the studio recording a brand new album. Later in March 2009 Lopez went on record to speak about the track via her official website "I’m always excited about my music, "Hooked on You" is one of a few tracks I’m currently working on. I’m flattered by everyone’s interest in the track and really excited for you to hear the real thing! Check my website soon for more information on my next release."[8]

In June 2009, Lopez confirmed that she was working on a full length studio album and not a greatest hits collection as previously thought. "I worked on music while I was pregnant and while I was at home, but now to really get into it and focus on it and to finish the project is exciting," she said in an MTV interview. Lopez said she was working on a few singles and trying to finish the album, so it could be out by the end of 2009. She also said that the album would feature a very "focused concept" and that she already chose a title for the album, however, she refused to reveal neither the concept nor the album title. She also confirmed that the two tracks that leaked in May 2009, "One Love" and "What Is Love", will be included on the album, but she doesn't know if they will be the first singles.[9][10] In July 2009, a spokesperson for Lopez confirmed to People magazine that her new studio album is scheduled for release in January 2010 the same month that Lopez's upcoming movie The Back-Up Plan is scheduled to be released.[11] In October 2009, People magazine confirmed the album's January 2010 release date and announced that the title of the album is Love?.[6] The release of the album has since been delayed to April 2010 to coincide with the The Back-Up Plan's new April 2010 release date.[12] "What Is Love" was written by Wynter Gordon who expressed discontent at the song's early arrival on the internet. She said "I respect and admire J-Lo and I was honored for her to cut my song. However the song was not properly serviced. It's not mixed, mastered, or finished but it's out for public consumption and opinion. That's why I'm angry".[13]. On December 21, 2009, Rap Up magazine confirmed the album's April 2010 release date coiciding with the release of Lopez's next film project, The Back-up Plan.[1]

Music

Alongside Darkchild and The Neptunes Lopez has worked with upcoming song writing duo Antea Birchett-Shelton and Anesha Birchett (better known as APlus), Nathaniel "Danja" Hills, Chris n Teeb of Dropzone, Jim Jonsin and D'Mile.[5] According to Rap-Up Magazine Tricky Stewart will also be producing some of the album including the first single "Louboutins" named after Christian Louboutin’s designer footwear. The song was co-produced and co-written by Tricky Stewart and The-Dream and was initially recorded by Brandy but when she left Epic Records the song stayed with the label and subsequently given to Lopez.[3] This is the second time in her ten year career that she has acquired a song previously recorded by Brandy, the first being "Ryde or Die" featured on Lopez's album Rebirth originally recorded for Brandy's Afrodisiac. In November 2009, Stewart told Vibe that his and The-Dream's fellow production associate Kuk Harrell, would be producing a lot of the album too. He said "I heard him working on some of the vocals and she has a lot of really good songs, I will say that," The stuff I heard was really good, really strong".[14]

In late December 2009 Rap-Up was the first amongst several media outlets invited to the exclusive listening party of the album. The magazine said that some of the tracks they previewed were not final mixes and may change between now and release, and that more songs will be added. Although the magazine said that nine songs from the upcoming album were mentioned, fonly seven were previewed:[1] The uptempo production pulsating drum-driven "Everybody's Girl"[2], a new version of "What Is Love" featuring additional drums and bass and "Starting Over" described as having a fast-paced galloping beat. Also previewed were the electropop "This Cannot Be Love" which is reminiscent of other Darkchild productions ("The Boy Is Mine"), previously leaked "One Love", the song "Keeper" with its bouncy hook resembling T.I.'s "Hello of a Life" (also produced by Danja, and guitar-driven ballad "Beautiful", which according to the magaizne may be used during the end credits of Lopez's upcoming movie The Back-Up Plan. Three other songs, "What Is Love (part 2)" (produced by Jean Baptiste, "Love & War" (produced by Danja), and "Story of My Life" (produced by Stargate), were mentioned but not previewed.[1]

Album title and concept

Lopez revealed that album would be called Love?. Later in an interview she clarified why she had chosen the title: "Love is the most confusing thing in the world, that's why the album is called Love with a question mark."[15] She also revealed that her husband Marc Anthony initially disproved of the title because he felt that it may imply that the couple were having marital problems.[15] She also said "love has always been a theme of my career and this record wasn't going to be different. The album has a lot of uptempo, dancy, urbany tracks."[15] She told MTV that the album would have a very "focused concept" and finished the interview by saying that she "loves making great pop/dance music with beautiful lyrics" which is what will be heard on this record.[9] Previewing the album, Billboard magazine commented on the album saying that "Lopez sings, talk-sings and broods (within pop reason) on the subject of love".[2] Rap-up said of the album's theme, it is very much in-keeping with the title, "a love roller coaster, taking you through the ups and downs of a relationship."[1]

Critical reception

At the album preview for media outlets Rap-Up's D.L. said "If it ain't broken don't fix it. Jennifer Lopez sticks to her hitmaking formula on her seventh studio album Love?, featuring contributions from heavy hitters (Danja, Darkchild, Stargate, Tricky Stewart & The-Dream and Wynter Gordon)." The magazine editor said of song 'Everybody's Love' "J.Lo questions whether her man is capable of loving her under the intense glare of the spotlight over the slick uptempo production. One of the standout tracks." Then of the song 'What Is Love' "The latest version has been mixed and hits harder with added drums" and of 'This Cannot Be Love' "It quickly picks up the pace with an electro-pop beat and speedy hook. The production gets more aggressive towards the end." Finally of the song 'Beautiful' "Its a guitar-driven ballad that sounds like it was made for a movie."[1]

Promotion and release

The album is set for release in April 2010 through Epic Records. In late October 2009, it was reported that the album's first single is called "Louboutins" after the famous fashion brand.[3] As scheduled Lopez performed and officially premiered her new single "Louboutins" at the 2009 American Music Awards, which aired on November 22, 2009. She was subsequently praised for the way that she recovered from an unchoreographed fall in the middle of the performance[16]. Lopez reprised the performance on the Ellen Dengeneres Show on December 3, 2009 where she also laughed and joked about the incident[17]. She was also booked to perform on the season six finale of So You Think You Can Dance on December 16, 2009. The performance took on a holiday theme and was choreographed by the show's team.[18] Her final performance of the year came on December 31, 2009 where Lopez performed "Louboutins" along with a medley of previous hits "Waiting For Tonight" / "Let's Get Loud" at Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest. Lopez's choice of outfit, a shimmering skin-tight catsuit, received attention from the media with the NY Daily News praising her for her "flawless physique"[19].

It has been reported that radio stations will hold contests where fans can win shoes and Lopez will visit designer boutiques to promote the album and lead single "Louboutins".[2]. On January 18, 2010, on the talkshow Lopez Tonight, Lopez appeared in place of George Lopez and opened the show with a ten-minute comedy set. G Lopez appeared after she finished to continue with the show and announced that Jennifer would be back in several weeks with a live band to perform.[20]. On February 27, 2010, Lopez is set to perform and host an episode of Saturday Night Live. [21]

Lola

On September 13, 2009, on the red carpet for the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Miami-based rapper Pitbull revealed that he recorded a track with Lopez and that it will be released as the first single from her upcoming album.[22] He also said that a music video for the song has already been shot, he described the video as having a sexy Eyes Wide Shut theme. The song, initially confirmed as "Lola", was produced by The Neptunes.[23] It was later revealed that the song is actually called "Fresh Out The Oven". In October 2009, a number of viral websites have been set up to promote the song, all under the name of Who is Lola, the websites include WhoisLola.com, a MySpace page, and a Twitter account. They all feature a dancing female figure named Lola.[24] People magazine later reported that, "Fresh Out The Oven", is just a buzz track, not the first single, and that it will not appear on the new album.[6] Rumors had surfaced that that Lopez had adopted 'Lola', as her alter-ego, however, this was confirmed as false by president of Epic Records, Amanda Ghost. She said "It's something fun. She hasn't become Sasha Fierce (Beyoncé's artistic alter ego). There won't be anything to do with Lola on her Love? album". "This is a hot club record that the label loved and Jennifer thought was fun, Jennifer and Pitbull got together and the record leaked. Lola is a fun character just for this song".[6] On November 5, 2009, MTV gave a sneak peak of the music video and reported that contrary to previous reports the song will be included on the album.[25] Lopez was in attendance at the LIV Nightclub in Miami on October 24, 2009, where the music video for "Fresh Out The Oven" was previewed[26][27] with official remix by Hex Hector also being previewed. It was also reported that the production duo and DJs the Jump Smokers had produced an official remix which was also supposed to be previewed but for undisclosed reasons it was shelved.[28] The music video for "Fresh Out The Oven" premiered on Lopez's official website on November 20, 2009.[29] The clip was directed by Jonas Akerlund[30] and according to Lopez's official website its formally titled: "Fresh Out the Oven" staring Jennifer Lopez as Lola & featuring Pitbull.[31]. On December 21, 2009, Rap-Up magazine reported that it will most likely feature on the album[1] with Billboard later saying that it is likely to appear as a bonus track.[2]

Singles

  • "Louboutins" is confirmed to be the first single from the album. Lopez premiered and performed the song live for the first time at the 2009 American Music Awards on November 22, 2009.[32] It had its radio debut on November 23, 2009 when Lopez premiered the song on KIIS FM radio show On Air With Ryan Seacrest.[33] It was sent to US radio on December 8, 2009 and was made available as a Digital Download on December 21, 2009. The music video will feature special shoes designed by Christian Louboutin.
  • "Everybody's Girl" was tipped for single release by Rap-Up and Billboard when they previewed the album. On January 20, 2010 German radio station, 'Planet Radio' played the song stating it could be the next single. A week later, on January 27, it was officially previewed on the station as the second (first international) single from Love?. The electronica-influenced dance pop number has yet to receive an official release date.[34]
