Re: Re: WikiProject Tagging

Hi there , Looks like Richard is busy in real life and havent edited for over a month. If Richard couldnot help in another 2-3 days, please drop a note on my talk page. TinucherianBot may be able to help you out with the same task , if Richard is busy. Thanks to kind Richard , he had also shared the auto assessment code with my bot. -- Tinu Cherian - 04:48, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Tinucherian, I never did get a response back from Richard. WikiProject Magazines, is still in need of article tagging and it would be great if your bot could help. Thanks, αЯβιτЯαЯιŁΨθ (talk) 15:44, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Tinucherian, I haven't heard from you in a while now, please let me know if you could help with WikiProject Magazines article tagging. It would be an enormous help, thanks. ARBITRARILY0 (talk) 23:33, 3 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot TinuCherian! It's a great help, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 12:17, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You are welcome... Will let you know when it is completed... currently I am adding the WP:MAG project banner and assessing as stubs for articles in Category:Magazine stubs and its subcategories ( except Category:Academic journal stubs ). Should I tag Category:Academic journal stubs also ? Should I also add the project banner to articles in Category:Magazines ? -- Tinu Cherian - 12:26, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think that it would be better not to tag any academic journal articles, because they are not all magazines (fortunately, most of these articles are already tagged by WikiProject Academic Journals). But yes, Category:Magazines should be tagged with the project banner. Thanks again for working on this! Arbitrarily0 (talk) 12:41, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Tinucherian. Thanks again for continuing to use your bot for WP:Mags tagging. I have an interest in creating a bot for myself, but I have absolutely no idea where to start. I skimmed through Wikipedia:Creating a bot, but only got more confused. I was wondering if you would help guide me along the bot creation process. Don't feel obligated, especially if you don't have the time, but I would greatly appreciate it if you would at least point me in the right direction. Thanks again, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 03:11, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Surely I will help you. Please bear with me for a few days. It needs a bit of long writeup. -- Tinu Cherian - 03:14, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Great, thanks! Please take your time (I'm not in a hurry). Thanks so much, Arbitrarily0 (talk) 03:20, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done : with the WP:MAG Tagging. I have tagged the articles in 1 - 3 levels of subcategories in Category:Magazines . I couldn't go too deep bcoz I have to personally look for possibility of any false positive articles in them. If you think there is some more cats to tagged, please let me know of the category and I will run my bot over them. Meanwhile this is how to run and use a bot like mine for WikiProject tagging :-
This is a AWB based bot. AWB can be used by human assissted edits too . Therefore you can get experienced on using the tool and then later create a bot account, file a Bot approval and then do with the bot accounts. The good thing of flagged bot accounts is that you need to save it manually for each edits.

This is how to use the AWB tool :
1) Download AWB from Wikipedia:AWB#.282.29_Download . You need to get AWB approval to use this. You can do this here . If approved, your name will be added to the CheckPage . Await for the approval before using AWB.
2) Extract it to a folder.
3) Kingbotk/Plugin that comes with AWB is very useful for tagging for WikiProject banners. Move the plugin .dll file to AWB folder . Start AutoWikiBrowser.exe and File (Top selection menu) > Log in . Give your wikipedia Login username and passwd .
4) Select from AWB , Plugins (Top selection menu) > Load Plugins > Kingbotk AWB Plugin.dll
5) Now you get Kingbotk AWB Plugin at Plugins Tab, you can select standard wikiprojects "India Plugin" or "Add generiic template" for other projects. Once selected you may need to configure with the project banner template details. 6) Now Select "Category" from the left side drop menu "Source" and then enter a category name in the box below
7) Click "Make list", let the list load up.
8) Do " Remove dupes" and "Filter out non main space "
9) "Convert to talk pages "
10) CAUTION:Dont select Category(Recursive) if you are not sure of all the sub categories
11) Dont forget to give appropriate Edit summary in the "Start" Tab.
12) Unselect "Doesnt Exist" from the "Skips" tab
13) Go to the Plugin Tab ( bottom) and click "Start the Process".
14) Click "Save" if u r ok with the changes else click 'Ignore'.

Have fun. Let me know if you have any doubts -- Tinu Cherian - 13:13, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not a problem. I just thought of sometimes. After it's done with Category:Unassessed physics articles of Unknown-importance, could you run it through Category:Stub-Class physics articles of Unknown-importance? Indian villages

Hi I see nobody followed up my suggestions to create the new categories by district? Indian villages need a hell of a lot of work and organisation. Personally I also prefer standard infoboxes. Also if you are starting some without coordinates and a map can you please include {{coord missing|India}} . This way Anemone can follow up with it. It places them in Category:India articles missing geocoordinate data

Also articles like Thuravoor Thekku need not have two stub categories. The geo district one is the idea otherwise the main Kerala one gets clogged up. This of course was why the district geo stubs were proposed in the first places. Best The Bald One White cat 14:02, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I had actually decided to start from where Frizpoll had abandonded the task, atleast for Indian settlements as a beginning. Looking at the census data, the total Number of inhabited villages in India is 593,731 .Even The settlements above population of 5000 people should be atleast over 2,00,000 ". Yes, it a long way to go..Currenly I am doing trial edit creation with articles of Kerala villages on my primary account. Once it is stablised , I will use TinucherianBot ( or one of yet to be born sisters :) ) for this purpose. I am trying to improve the code as of now with tools like AWB and CSV loader. An example of article will look like Velliyamattom.

The next herculean task is the compilation of required data from [1] in the CSV form. The population data can be retrived only by each district at a time.Co-ordinate details are not available in then Indian census data. As for infoboxes , I use {{Infobox Indian Jurisdiction}} which is customised for Indian data. should I also add Category:India articles missing geocoordinate data , bcoz the above inbox wil automaically add state level cats like Category:Kerala location articles needing coordinates -- Tinu Cherian - 15:25, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK sounds good, although I always think the standard infobox is the most understandable for editors who may wish to edit them. It is a great shame as yet there has not been a bot to aid us. Imagine we had 593,731 well referenced articles with reliable sources. I dare to say that eventually we will have it covered but it will take decades at present rate. I find it very frustrating that wikimedia and a lot of editors seem to care little about the content on this site and the best way in the long term to generate content. If User:TinucherianBot has the potential to do this and standardise articles I am behind you 110% The Bald One White cat 15:52, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for the continued support and encouragement. -- Tinu Cherian - 16:02, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you plan on running this, can we please sort out the categories first as I once proposed? Wasn't it 464 categories? For example Velliyamattom would be categorizes as Category:Cities, towns and villages in Idukki District

The Bald One White cat 15:56, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I dont have any objection, but the present convention is that cities/towns and villages are seperated. like Category:Cities and towns in Idukki district and Category:Villages in Idukki district ? -- Tinu Cherian - 16:02, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know but there are not likely to be many cities or towns in each district in comparison to villages. If there are only one or two by district then there is no point in seperating them. Howeve rif there are at least 10 towns oer district I have no objection but the reason they were merged is to avoid confusion over what is a village or town The Bald One White cat 16:33, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

But the word district must be capitalised as District as this is the category convention all across wikipedia and articles from most countries are called something Province or something District rather than "district". The Bald One White cat 16:34, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK. I will work on them for the creation of the cats for the 611 districts of India -- Tinu Cherian - 16:59, 11 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please can we create the new categories as a priority. The more stubs you start before the more work it will entail later re categorizing them. I suggest we keep the cities and towns in Kerala for example intact and just reorganize the village categories by district. I would also strongly propose creating navigation templates by area to improve coordination between articles as Indian geo articles seem to have very few templates. The Bald One White cat 11:31, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • I can create the cats before the articles creation, but I felt that people may start deleting them ( as no content) by the time I have articles in them.
  • Since the no of villages in India is huge, we should reorganise by district.
  • Yes, templates for villages in a district is a good idea ?

-- Tinu Cherian - 11:40, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nobody said you have to create 611 in one go!! Just reorganize it state at a time, Anyway there are enough existing articles to probably constitute creating them all now. If any of them have a low number then place a {pop cat} note inside them. If you like I can create a template which instructs editors not to delete any new cats as it is part of a reorganization porces swhich will result in a greater coverage on Indian villages The Bald One White cat 12:02, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good.. :) -- Tinu Cherian - 12:04, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A good example to follow is Category:Villages in Poland. Organised exactly in the way I'd expect India to be and also has nav templates for villages at the bottom of articles. I take it Indian districts also have sub districts? If there are too many villages by district to constitute nav tmeplates I mean like 500 + villages thenyou could create nav templates by sub district but categorise them as Villages in ... District. Just like Poland. This way we have a highly organised and concentrated group of articles and things will develop very well this way. It will take a major effort but once I;ve finished with Nepal I will make it one of my priorities to help you set it up The Bald One White cat 12:08, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK I've created Template:Indian pop cat to assist you. I see the reordering begun a while back in places e.gCategory:Villages in Andhra Pradesh so as the convention already seems to be with a lowercasing for district I have no objection to continuing this trend as long as all of India is split consistently in this way The Bald One White cat 12:19, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The template for each subdistrict would be also gud for Indian villages but I guess it itself is a huge task. Btw Thanks for helping out ! Btw I had started with a few district subcats ( 5-7) with smaller case. How do you think I shud proceed, lower /upper case for Districts ?Tell me, I will follow that convention hereafter -- Tinu Cherian - 12:24, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Section break1

Well perhaps a bot can do something like that like it did with Poland a while back in regards to sub district templates there undoubtedly thousands that need to be made. Me personally I always try to capitalise Province or District as it gives it an air of governance. However I've just been reading a thread from 2006 where User:Tobi Conradi attempted to move all the districts to capitals but was reverted by Nichalp. Looking around the convention for India seems to be smaller casing so to avoid any potential conficts I think it would be best to resume with lower casing for categories too seems as int the present form the district articles are in lower casing. Anyway I'm about to create the categories for Kerala so once they are created you can begin depopulating the village in Kerala category perhaps using AWB to asisst you. The Bald One White cat 12:32, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK here they are:

The idea is that you simplify categorisation as much as possible as avoid categorising the article in two categories so remove "Villages in Kerala" or even "Idukki district" from a village articles and categorize it purely as "Villages in Idukki district". Cool? So now the Villages in Kerala cat needs complete emptying, Happy editing! The Bald One White cat 12:46, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Urgh small problem. I just recategorised Achickal and your templates seme to have automatic categories which place them in "Villages in Kerala" which we want removed. Can you sort this? The Bald One White cat 12:50, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The culprit is {{Infobox Indian Jurisdiction}}

<!-- ---->|village = {{#ifeq:{{{state_name|}}}|Andhra Pradesh|{{#ifexist:Category:Villages in {{{district|}}} district|[[Category:Villages in {{{district|}}} district]]|}}|[[Category:Villages in {{{state_name|}}}{{#ifeq:{{{state_name|}}}|Punjab|_(India)|}}]]}}
This shud probably be fixed ! -- Tinu Cherian - 13:09, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I know I asked Nichalp to fix it. The Bald One White cat 13:30, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. I saw that. Hopefully Nich will respond soon. Btw one more doubt .. What does {{coord missing|India}} do? Will AnimoneBot find the actual co-ordinates and add them to article if the template is present ? -- Tinu Cherian - 13:37, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would ask User:The Anome about that. It seems like you have missing coordinates organized by state so it shouldn't be a problem The Bald One White cat 13:41, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

if that is the case, I neednot add {{coord missing|India}} , right ? -- Tinu Cherian - 13:46, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Best to just name the templates as just "Thiruvananthapuram district". It then will be possible to add landmarks or notable other content to the templates. Also articles which are (Village) it shouldn't be in capitals and also it should be etc Archol, Kerala rather than (Village) The Bald One White cat 13:27, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

None of those proposed (not actual) Notability guidelines have any consensus, the discussions consist of only a handful of editors at best and so don't represent a community consensus, and the AfD/Common_outcomes#Places doesn't mean anything in the context of creating articles en masse via an automated process, as was determined during the FritzpollBot discussion.
