Newsletter

The WP:IND newsletter has been dormant for nearly a year now. I'm planning to revive it by starting work on the June 2010 edition. Possible theme - focus on article quality (number of FA, GA, notable reviews, saves etc. - there have been a number of India related GAN and FAR over the past couple of months) and also the assessment department. WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 1 - (June 2010)

Project News WP:IND Newsletter is back! It's been nearly a year since the last edition, but we hope to bring out issues on a more regular basis now. The India Wikiproject was set up to increasing coverage of India-related topics on Wikipedia, and over the past few months the focus has been on improving article quality. A number of the project's featured articles underwent featured article reviews over the past year. Of these, Darjeeling and Flag of India survived the review process, while the rest were demoted. During the same period, Gangtok, Harbhajan Singh, Darjeeling and Mysore were featured on the main page respectively on August 20, September 17, November 6 and December 29, 2009. Meanwhile, articles on topics as diverse as Political history of Mysore and Coorg (1565–1760), Marwari horse and Iravan were promoted as featured articles, and respectively appeared on the main page on March 25, May 17 and May 28, 2010. Consequently, the number of FA-class articles under the project's scope dropped from 67 in August 2009 to 63 in June 2010. The number of good articles, however, saw a more than 40% increase, from 91 to 130 during the same period, while the number of featured lists saw a 33% increase from 12 to 16. Due to the recent policy changes regarding unreferenced Biographies of Living People (BLPs), an effort was started in January 2010 to source all unreferenced BLPs coming under Wikiproject India. 1200 such articles were identified initially and more were added to the list later. Due to the sourcing effort, the number of Indian unreferenced BLPs is down to 565 currently. During February-April 2010, There was a large scale disruption of Kerala related articles by a Thrissur based IP vandal. Editing from a dynamic IP BSNL connection, the vandal changed dates of birth, death and ages of a number of Malayalam and Tamil film actors. Later he added a few international biographies to his list. He also marked some living people like Arvind Swamy as dead. A month long range block was imposed on his IP range two times and each time he came back to vandalise dates once the block expired. Currently the range has been blocked for three months till September 11, 2010. What's New? Three members of the project, Abecedare, Tinu Cherian and SpacemanSpiff received their sysop mops in October-December 2009. Congratulations! This picture, shot in India, won the Commons:Picture of the Year contest 2009. Translations of the description in Indian languages are solicited. Wikipedians in Bangalore have been organising periodic meetups over the past year, in collaboration with the Centre for Internet and Society. The next meetup is scheduled for July 18, 2010. Indian and other Wikipedians from all Wikipedias in various languages are welcome to attend.

Current proposals and discussions Please add Wikipedia talk:Noticeboard for India-related topics to your watchlist in order to stay updated with the latest discussions regarding various aspects of the project. A discussion is underway here to reach a consensus regarding the use of Indian number names (lakh, crore etc.) in Wikipedia articles. Please participate and add your comments. Join the effort to source and save unreferenced Indian BLPs. Some unintended vandalism is going on at the Assamese Wikipedia by the sole active editor. This is a request for Assamese-conversant Wikipedians to help resolve the issue. A discussion is in progress here in order to determine whether non-Western (including Indian) forms of classical music should be referred to by the nomenclature of art music instead of classical music. Please participate and add your comments. Watchlist the Articles for Deletions page for India related discussions. Opinions from more Indian Wikipedians are required in many of the discussions. The World Classical Tamil Conference 2010 is at present underway in Coimbatore, and the Tamil Wikipedia is actively involved at the event. A detailed report will follow in the next issue. Wikimania 2010 is happening in Poland from July 7-11. Indian Wikipedians attending include Gurubrahma, Shiju Alex, Ravidreams , Santhosh Thottingal, Tinu Cherian, WMF Board member Bishakha Datta and Advisory Board member Achal Prabala. WP:FILMS June 2010 Newsletter

The WikiProject Films Newsletter Volume V, no. 6 - June 2010
Project news Last month, significant progress was made on contributing to the discussion pertaining to the non-free images in our spotlight articles. Based on consensus, several images were removed. However, there are still multiple FA and GA articles that need some input to determine if they should be kept or not. The goal of the drive is not to remove all non-free images from the articles, but to ensure that they comply with fair use requirements. If you have not already (or if you have, please revisit) join in on the discussion to help finish off the images. Even if you comment on only a few articles, that will be very helpful in determining consensus and allow for focusing on the sources and prose of the articles. Our project currently has over 64,700 film-related articles, with just over a hundred unassessed articles, thanks to the assessment department! Remember to always add the {{Film|class=}} template to a film article's talk page so the project can get a better idea of what work still needs to be done. If you believe that an article should be assessed at a certain class, feel free to follow the assessment scale and assess the article yourself (it's not too difficult to determine the basic classes such as stubs, categories, or lists). Below is a table showing a breakdown of our articles by class. Based on views, the top five most popular articles from our project this month were: Internet Movie Database, Toy Story 3, 2010 in film, List of Toy Story characters, and Shutter Island. For a list of our project's top 1,000 most popular articles, see here. Consider helping to improve one of these articles that is seen by thousands to millions of people each month. Hindi

Hi This is a complaint against a used named sodabottle. I added Hindi, Malayalam and Hindi scripts in Coimbatore page. (i.e just name of the Coimbatore City in these three languages). Mr sodabottle warned me that I should not used other languages in this page and if continue to do so he will block me from editing in Wikipedia. What is this? Prakash, I have been repeatedly asking you not to add Hindi and Malayalam scripts to the Coimbatore page. I asked you to discuss this in the article's discussion page. You ignore my warnings and continue to insert the scripts. When someone is not agreeing to your edits in Wikipedia, you should discuss in the article's discussion page before inserting them again. If you look closely i have explained why Hindi/Malayalam script should not be added to Coimbatore - a)The word "coimbatore" is Tamil b)Hindi and Malayalam speakers are a tiny minority in the city. If we start adding native scripts of all languages spoken in all cities, then the articles will become unmanageable. --Sodabottle (talk) 09:21, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Prakash, I have to agree with User:Sodabottle. The consensus is to add only the official native language only of a place. Translation of Coimbatore in Tamil is more than enough. WikiCup 2010 July newsletter

We are half-way through our penultimate round, and nothing is yet certain. Pool A, currently led by Sasata (submissions) has ended up the more competitive, with three contestants ( Sasata (submissions), Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and TonyTheTiger (submissions)) scoring over 500 points already. Pool B is led by Casliber (submissions), who has also scored well over 500. The top two from each pool, as well as the next four highest scorers regardless of pool, will make it through to our final eight. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Planning has begun for the 2011 WikiCup, with open discussions concerning scoring and flags for next year's competition. Contributions to those discussions would be appreciated, especially concerning the flags, as next year's signups cannot begin until the flag issue has been resolved. Signups will hopefully open at some point in this round, with discussion about possible changing in the scoring/process opening some time afterwards.

Earlier this round, we said goodbye to Hunter Kahn (submissions), who has bowed out to spend more time on the book he is authoring with his wife. We wish him all the best. In other news, the start of this round also saw some WikiCup awards sent out by Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions). We appreciate his enthusiasm, and contestants are of course welcome to award each other prizes as they see fit, but rest assured that we will be sending out "official" awards at the end of the competition.
