Proposed deletion of Similarities between Tamil and Kannada languages

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Similarities between Tamil and Kannada languages, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Page appears to be original research; it cites no sources. It is simply a list of cognate words in two Dravidian languages. As such it has little information value.

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Editorial: How to prepare an A-Class Review

Perhaps the most important—and, indeed, most respected—aspect of the Military History project is our rigorous A-Class Review (ACR) system, which puts articles through the most robust review outside of WP:FAC. Although reviewing might seem daunting to newcomers, this article will give you an outline of three popular reviewing methods so you can actually start contributing yourself.

  1. General nit-pick - this is one of the easiest - and one of the most common - reviewing styles seen throughout Wikipedia. It is a similar approach to that you would see in proofreading and classroom marking. Basically, it is a general overview of the article, not getting too specific on aspects of the prose. The most common statements include This article could benefit from a light copyedit before going to FAC or You might want to check the endash and emdash placement in the article. It's a style that is incredibly easy to manage, and one that requires little-to-no experience in previous reviewing.
  2. Specialization - it often is the case that those who have been reviewing articles for a long time will move away from the general review towards more specific areas of articles. As an example, Tony usually stays within the realm of prose and copyediting while reviewing Featured Article Candidates, Tom used to focus almost entirely on external links and disambiguations, while others specialize their focus exclusively on copyediting, reference formatting, dashes, punctuation and flow, image licensing, and a host of other areas. This is a review method that is not nearly as time-consuming as other methods, as it allows you to quickly scan an article, spot the things that you work on, and how they need to be fixed.
  3. Sectional - My preferred style of reviewing, this is one of the most informative styles. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most time-consuming and exhaustive styles. Essentially, it involves going through the entire article, section by section, and pointing out every major (and often many of the minor) flaws present within each section. Everything from prose to reference formatting to content. It is a reviewing style that is exhausting, and often takes two or three goes through the article to get everything (sometimes even more), but it gives the article's main contributors two benefits. First, everything is well organized, mostly under section headers like this one, and it often makes finding individual sentences or refs much easier, as they are within that section. Secondly, it points out a lot of the problems from a lot of the areas.

Best of luck, and happy Reviewing! Cam (Chat)

Considering Secisek seems to have retired from wikipedia, it seems to me to very much make sense that we do try to find someone to replace him as one of the Christianity coordinators. I don't think that will happen unless the members get notification of potential new elections. On that basis, I think it would probably help a lot if the newsletter were delivered shortly. If, for whatever reason, you cannot do so, please let me know and I will try to deliver it manually myself thereafter. Thanks. John Carter (talk) 14:22, 16 July 2009 (UTC)

Project news
  • The Christianity project and its related projects currently have 76 FAs, 8 FLs, and 148 GAs. We gained new recognized content in each field, with 4 FAs promoted, 2 FLs, and 3 GAs. Congratulations and a big thank you to all those who worked on these articles!

Other news
  • I am still working on the categorization matter. With any luck, we should have some results by the end of the month. There are also some discussions regarding project related activities at Wikipedia:WikiProject Christianity/General Forum. One issue in particular that might be addressed is possible elections of new coordinators. Anyone interested in serving in such a capacity is more than welcome to indicate as much.
Related projects news
Member contest of the month
  • The previous contests are still ongoing, because of the extreme amount of time the categorization is taking me. Anyone who can bring any of the few Stub class articles among the project's 1000 most often accessed articles by the end of July will get an award. Please see the details Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Christianity#Project challenge of the month.

From the Members

Welcome to the Tenth issue of the WikiProject Christianity newsletter! Use this newsletter as a mechanism to inform yourselves about progress at the project and please be inspired to take more active roles in what we do.

It has been a long time since the last coordinators election. There is a lot for people to do, and I certainly would welcome seeing any individuals with an interest in such a position put themselves forward as candidates. I in particular would very much like to see some degree of "specialization" in the coordinators, so that, for instance, we might have someone knowledgable about some of the specific Christian faith traditions or other main subjects, like Orthodoxy, Lutheranism, Mormonism, the Jehovah's Witnesses, art, theology, and so on. If any parties who have experience with some of our faith- or- subject-based content would be interested in being candidates, I would love to see them do so. Please feel free to take part in the discussion regading what the minimum number of category items is, and how to deal with the non-qualifying categories, on the General Forum page.

WikiCup participates in the Wikipedia:The Great Wikipedia Dramaout

Hello all, iMatthew here. I just wanted to let you know about "The Great Wikipedia Dramaout" which starts this Saturday. The goal of the Dramaout is to spend five days working on improving articles and abstaining from any of Wikipedia's drama. I don't think that any of you will have a problem focusing on articles for five days, because of course, any work you get done during the Dramaout will count towards your score in the WikiCup. Details are on the page; hope to see you all signing up! :) iMatthew talk at 00:27, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

The look and feel is better when there is an image there...instead of just words.. Just wanted an India related image. Would you like to suggest another one? -- Tinu Cherian - 12:09, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Ganesh, the same thing happened to me the other day: The images were very slow to load, and the Wikipedia logo wasn't appearing in the left corner. I agree with Tinu Cherian—I've been putting those particular images [1, 2] simply for patriotic eye candy. They're certainly not required. Also, in my opinion, if any user wants his or her photography (of India) featured, the newsletter would be a great place. Thanks, [sd] 01:02, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

Malayalam language films

Hi. I think it is a bad idea splitting the Malayalm language films by year. Even English-language films are not even split. The convention seems to me to place all the films in one category. Was there a specific reason you felt it necessary to split by year? Was the main category really unmanageable? We have List of Malayalam films by year so that should be usueful to you if you want to navigate by year. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:37, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

I recently think categoring per year is good, be it for malayalam or english language films. An yes, I respect the consensus at the CFD -- Tinu Cherian - 08:39, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Wake up

Your friend wikireader41 should not be vandalizing actually one would expect this Pro Indian trashy edits like these: [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] I request you to open your eyes and stop feeding Indian pov pushers and ignoring there pov and stop targeting Pakistani editors get your house in order first don’t start a pov war and then don’t cry if Pakistanis respond to Indian abusive editors like wikireader41 I request you not to be hypocritical and look at the edits of Indian users first then moan if Pakistanis respond to the Indian pov pushers 81.151.100.91 (talk) 23:54, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

As much as I agree that the edits in question are despicable, they are from the beginning of the year, and are less likely to be attributed to a current event. Sephiroth storm (talk) 08:55, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
Why the double standards then User Adilyour made those stupid edits at the start of the year which was 6 months ago actually why is he being abused and picked on by Indians now? why aren’t the Indians punishing wikireader41 who’s still sending out abusive comments like this [9] why do they still abuse Adilyour I shall tell you why because he’s Pakistani well we cant help it if these guys get taught this in American schools which are sadly being infected by exported Indian Hindutva textbooks [10] I will continue to answer back to any wise guy Indian pov pusher like wikireader41 until he’s blocked forever why is he allowed to send abusive edits while if a Pakistani responds it’s a big tragedy If Indians are willing to dish it out abuse like wikireader41 they should also be able to take some and stop moaning peace out 86.158.235.174 (talk) 12:30, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
While I dont agree with the above edits of wikireader41, those edits are a long time ago. The user is no friend of mine... Do you expect me to go to every article on Wikipedia to check its NPOV? I havent seen those above edits earlier as the above article is not in my watch list. I have seen Adilyour and Yousaf POV pushing on some articles like State sponsered Terrorism and I've commented on them. You have no idea about my working style on Wikipedia when I have objected some India biased POV in some of the articles. Having said that , I know that you are registered user and commenting here as an IP sock. Please login and comment here if you require further discussion -- Tinu Cherian - 17:05, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Category:Malayalam-language films

Why were all the Malayalam-language films removed from all the Malayalam-language films by year categories? Do you know? Carlaude:Talk 04:54, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

This is a result of Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2009_July_11#Malayalam-language_films_by_year. While my personal opinion was such categories are needed, I respect the consensus. -- Tinu Cherian - 17:08, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
Never mind that... my question is resoved now.
What do you think of having the Malayalam-language films by decade placed directly in Category:Malayalam-language films without the Category:Malayalam-language films by decade inbetween? I think the "by decade" adds nothing and the way I read the CfD it is not called for by the CfD either. If you like it that is fine, but if not we can point this out to User:Xdamr and he can speedy-remove it as a category that only he has edited. Carlaude:Talk 21:09, 19 July 2009 (UTC)
I dont have any strong opinions either for or aganist this suggestion. I am Ok either way -- Tinu Cherian - 21:50, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

I couldnt find any reliable sources to back up the list. Nevertheless, the article should be renamed to List of top grossing Malayalam films in 2008 -- Tinu Cherian - 09:50, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
I'll PROD it for now, if someone else can find sources good, and then we can move the list; I figured you'd be the best person to do that before I PRODded. cheers -SpacemanSpiffCalvinHobbes 14:03, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Wikimedia India

Hi,

Let me introduce myself as an NRI Wikipedian, much interested in seeing the formation of Wikimedia India. It is very important for the growth and promotion of wiki in India (even though its currently very popular, the scope is massive). I understand that this was discussed in the recent Bangalore meetup hosted kindly by yourself. Could u pl. give me an update on the progress made so far? Thanks, Around The Globeसत्यमेव जयते 13:39, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

I am not in the loop for the latest developments regarding Wikimedia India. I suggest asking User:Arunram, User:Sundar or User:HPN for the latest updates on this -- Tinu Cherian - 15:27, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Malayalam films

Hello!! Glad to see there is now a Malayalam film database. There is vast amount of films missing, if I have time I'll help start a few!!

As I've found a site that lists them by year I think I will start lists of films by year like Bollywood and Tamil, after all this is what you were trying to achieve with the categories right? Sorry I opposed your categories by year but I'll give you some help on this, if you want it? Dr. Blofeld White cat 12:47, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks Blofeld, I knew sooner or later I will get ur help in this ;).yes, there is a huge lack of articles of Malayalam films ( approximately 3500-4000 ) . Btw can your split the decade list articles to per year for Malayalam films also ? You may want to see http://www.prd.kerala.gov.in/1981.htm too... -- Tinu Cherian - 14:25, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Yep I will, certianly, I have a lot of cleanup/error fixing errands to sort out at present i'll get to it in a week or two. I did the Tamil films the other day. My only concern is that some of the years seem to be missing like 1970 etc and that the tables are not formatted like the standard ones for Bollywood and Tamil. From what I saw the website starts listing the films from 1961. At present there onyl seems to be a few listed for the 60s so I've red linked from 1970 to present OK? If you could fill out 1970 in the 70s list somewhat I can begin then at 1970 when I come around to it. Keeo up the good work! Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:01, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanq Blofeld for your kind words. To be very frank, you are one of greatest inspirations on Wikipedia. -- Tinu Cherian - 11:54, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
