The 8th Adelaide Meetup finally happened(!) on #Wednesday, 16 April 2014
Eleven people attended; (see below for a summary of the meeting)

February 2013?

Happy New Year! Are there any adelaide-wiki-meetups planned? Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 09:44, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

And Happy New Year to you as well. :) It has started well, so I retain hope.
We were discussing trying something for mid-February. One of the suggestions was to try out something a tad more formal: I have this great space at City West that is under utilized, and both near a pub and with a good pizza supplier. :) So we were discussing a regular event with a bit of a talk about something wiki-related every month or so, along with pizza and/or beer. - Bilby (talk) 13:30, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
We were discussing trying something for mid-February. - So far, so good ...
One of the suggestions was to try out something a tad more formal - Well, OK. (How formal?)
I have this great space at City West - Good! It'll make a nice change from the East End.
So we were ... - Sounds good. (Except for the "or" bit of "and/or". i.e. I'd prefer "and")
I'm looking forward to reading more information! Pdfpdf (talk) 15:34, 17 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'll try and follow this up with more details next week. We'd been discussing having semi-formal talks/topics to go with open discussion, as that way there could be more of a focus each month, and we might be able to pull in new editors. I've given a few talks on editing WP over the last year, and there has been a lot of interest in going someone to meet editors and learn a bit more about it, as well as some requests for a "how to edit WP" weekend session. At City West we have teaching space which we don't use much consisting of an open-plan area with a number of good computers, and various breakout rooms for presentations.
An beer + pizza works for me. Or beer + pretty much anything. - Bilby (talk) 13:15, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
and we might be able to pull in new editors. - Interesting. How would you get the word to them?
Or beer + pretty much anything. - True. However, I have to admit I prefer a Shiraz or a Cab Sav with a steak ...
Speaking of which, if you're thinking of a weekend: On sunday nights (only), The Dog & Duck (125 Hindley St) does a 250g rump for $7 (used to be $6), imperial pints for $7, very nice house red for $5. i.e. Sunday: 12 noon-8 pm ($7.00 meals restricted menu). (However, I can't find a copy of the Sunday night menu.) Pdfpdf (talk) 14:08, 19 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What are the chances of User:Timeshift9 turning up? I'd shout him whatever he drinks to have more than a one sentence conversation with him. Philiashasspots (talk) 01:06, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

So - what's the plan for February? Pdfpdf (talk) 11:14, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hahaha, me? Zero to none :) Timeshift (talk) 06:10, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

:) Why not? Philiashasspots (talk) 00:42, 5 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A "how to" guide for setting up a Meeting

Rather than continue to hijack Bilby's talk page, I went looking for better places to do this. Here's what I found:

Riverside Precinct Adelaide Meetup
Next: TBA
Last: 6 March 2020
This box: view  talk  edit

Thus I've created: Wikipedia:Meetup/Adelaide#Meetup 8 and Wikipedia:Meetup/Adelaide/Meetup 8

The above has been copied from Bilby's talk page to Wikipedia:Meetup/Adelaide/Meetup 8 Pdfpdf (talk) 03:02, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Two possible informal meetups this Sunday 27/1/2013

A.M. Torrens Island

I'm organising a picnic at the Torrens Island Quarantine Station on Sunday morning, 27 January - this is an opportunity for an informal WP meeting for anyone who's available. Contact me via an off-wiki email from my userpage and I'll send a flyer with details - but please note that since access to Torrens Island is restricted, I need to have RSVPs by Thursday night / first thing Friday a.m. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 03:36, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Alternatively, the picnic flyer can be downloaded from here - but please note that RSVPs are required by Friday morning at the latest.
(Pdfpdf and Bilby have sent their apologies, but it is still a rare opportunity for local wikipedians to visit this historic site, and to be informed about our ideas for future WP Adelaide chapter activities.) Also please note that the organisation of the exercise to photographically document the Quarantine Station buildings (mentioned in the flyer) is well underway, with a number of experienced photographers participating. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 03:36, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

RSVP list:

Evening - Hindley St

For anyone who is interested but can't make it to the picnic, Pdfpdf has suggested meeting up at the Dog and Duck later that evening. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 06:00, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
See above for my "sales pitch" regarding the Dog & Duck. The Sunday menu includes a number of meals for $7. e.g: 250/300gm rump steak, (and also, a huge rump steak, 500-600gm, for $10-$15), fish, snitzels, something vegitarian - and others I can't remember all the details.
I'll be there from 6pm. Orders for the kitchen close at 8pm.
See you there?
(RSVP here would be appreciated.) Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 13:08, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WebCite
The archiving service I mentioned at the meetup is WebCite, described at Wikipedia:Using WebCite. It works on AdelaideNow; I just used it to create http://www.webcitation.org/6Dyv11pfF, which is a permanent archive of an article from today complete with picture and readers' comments. Thanks for the invite. A very pleasant evening; good food, great company and superlative beer. Glad I could make it. Doug butler (talk) 11:51, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

2014

It's been too long since we last had the pleasure of each other's company. There's again an opportunity to meet on Sunday morning at a picnic on Torrens Island (see the invitation here) but you'll need to book a place today.

Otherwise, any suggestions for a date for a meetup in the city? Tuesday nights especially are out for me. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 03:06, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

April 2014

There wasn't any response to my earlier post, but I did have a chat with Bilby three weeks ago and we initially thought that the third Wednesday in March would be a good time for us - but in the end we were just too busy and time ran out on us.
So, how about the third Wednesday in April then? - it's the 16th. Or are there any other suggestions?
Bilby suggested using his campus space at UniSA, which has computers available, and supplying pizzas. We have also talked about trying to make this a more regular event, with guest speakers. There is a community history officer from HistorySA who is interested in coming along to meet us, so we need to fix a date. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 05:52, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm keen. Will be good to meet some local Wikipedians after recently joining the fold.Danimations (talk) 02:41, 27 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Count me in Doug butler (talk) 22:06, 27 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Now that we have a couple of registrations, and no suggestions for alternative dates, I'll lock in Wednesday 16 April after I've had confirmation from Bilby that his suggested venue is available. I'll also contact the community history officer from HistorySA who offered to come. (She helped to organise the recent digitisation workshop at the State Library - see the flickr photos of the event here. Details of the event, as well as information on future workshops can be found here.) Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 00:31, 28 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Bilby is now back, and has just confirmed the venue for the 16th. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 07:30, 4 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm suggesting a relatively late starting time, as I will be attending the SA NRM Science Conference on 15-16 April. The event concludes with a post-event networking drinks event which finishes at 7pm, leaving me enough time to get to the other end of North Tce for the WP Meetup. I find these sorts of events useful for making new contacts, so hopefully there may be some additional interest among the conference attendees for our Meetup. There's already one of my other acquaintances who has indicated that she will be coming. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 03:10, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Just to clarify the location - it is at the University of South Australia, City West Campus. The map displays it as the SM building in the top left corner. If you are walking down North Terrace, it is just past the main UniSA campus when walking away from the city, just past the Riviera hotel. I'll make sure that there are signs on the door. - Bilby (talk) 12:28, 7 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm still trying to get a guest speaker. The task might be a little difficult, because I've just had the news that the National Trust of SA, in conjunction with the Adelaide City Council, will be simultaneously holding the launch of the Adelaidepedia website - at Ayres House, at the other end of North Terrace! Due to it being an invitation-only affair with the Governor in attendance, it won't be possible to merge the two events.
It will be different to how Wikipedia works, in that it will have more restricted geographical coverage, being limited to the area of the City of Adelaide (which is sponsoring the website); and rather than allowing anonymous editing (which is responsible for a lot of the vandalism that occurs on Wikipedia), editing will be essentially by invitation - which should make it a more reliable source. So, I can imagine that Adelaidepedia will become a great resource for setting up crosslinks to Wikipedia, and vice-versa. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 06:19, 10 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Catherine Manning confirmed as guest speaker. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 08:03, 10 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I fly out to Japan on the morning of the 16th :( Sorry all, would have been there with bells on otherwise! Have fun! Daniel (talk) 12:09, 10 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'll put it on my calendar and make an effort to come along. About time I got to one of these. Thanks for organising. Cheers Donama (talk) 02:23, 13 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid I have to make an apology for Wednesday night... I have a double-booking and my other engagement is the AGM of a non-profit organisation I'm a part of. There's an election taking place and I'm nominated for a position, so unfortunately, that takes precedence. I hope you all have an enjoyable night. Danimations (talk) 10:15, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Apology on this occasion, keep me posted for future events Screech1616 (talk) 12:38, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I am interested in attending, still open for more people? Can not guarantee 100% at the moment my availability due to uni work but should know soon. blue520 04:32, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine, there'll be plenty of room. One person at today's NRM Science conference seems quite interested, and I now have permission to put up posters advertising our event, so that may attract some additional interest. (BTW, the presiding member of the AMLR NRM Board, Professor Chris Daniels, approves of our project.) Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 15:02, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry can not make it this evening, have just got back from taking a cat to the Vet and need to keep an eye on it this evening. Hope it is a good evening for all. blue520 09:48, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm in! Some possibility I'll bring along a friend whose made a few edits (as in, 15, heh), but more likely he'll be too busy. Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 07:09, 15 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Meeting summary

Eleven people turned up - including four persons of the feminine gender(!) and two newbie-editors.
After an informal chat where those present informed each other of what their Wikipedia editing interests are, we moved into a room with a table and a projector and had a guided look at the developing History SA website, under the guidance of Catherine Manning, our guest presenter.
Many and various discussions covering a very wide range of topics followed.
One of the outcomes was the decision to have an Editathon event during History Week in May 2014.
Those remaining then adjourned to Hindley Street where kebabs, falafels, and other unspeakable concoctions were consumed. Pdfpdf (talk) 15:16, 19 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

With 11 participants, including guest Catherine Manning from History SA, and 9 apologies (+ one other who didn't make it), there was a lot of interest in the meetup. (The number of page views of this page—which peaked at 180 on 10 April, with secondary peaks of 118 on 12 April, and 66 on 14 & 16 April—suggests a high level of general interest; however, there are less than 30 users currently watching this page.)
Perhaps selecting a date just before Easter wasn't such a good choice. Having it in the evening of the second day of a very intense NRM Science conference didn't result in any response from that event. There was some interest from people I spoke with there, but I found I was suffering from information overload at the end of it, so I imagine that others felt likewise. Despite this, Bilby and I still think that the 3rd Wednesday of the month is a good time for future meetups (unless there are any strong objections).
Catherine has moved to the on-line projects manager position in History SA only a couple of weeks ago, but she gave us an overview of how the History SA website is developing. Unfortunately at present the History SA Board has chosen not to release their images under a Creative Commons licence, which precludes their use on Wikipedia. However they will be generating more content, which will be useful as reliable source material for us. She has seen a preview of the Adelaidepedia site which, despite its official launch, doesn't appear to be live yet. Apparently this website will be aimed towards mobile users wanting information when visiting locations within the Adelaide City Council area. (I have briefly spoken with the developer of the site, Darren Peacock of NTSA, and arranged to meet with him soon. He said that Adelaidepedia will draw on WP as part of the 'semantic web'. Catherine said that Darren was previously involved with developing the History SA website, and he said that he knows Bilby as well.)
I mentioned some of the meetings that Bilby and I have had with some of our cultural institutions, with the aim of setting up a local GLAM-Wiki collaboration. Last December we met with Lesley Sharp of the State Library of SA. Some time ago we met with Suzanne Miller at the SA Museum, but as she has now moved on, we will have to re-establish contact with the new Director.
My view is that the Friends groups and Visitor Guides attached to the various cultural institutions may be the best source of new WP editors capable of making significant contributions to articles on SA topics, and that experienced local WP editors can play a useful mentoring role. Although progress in setting up an official GLAM-Wiki project has been slow so far, at least we have started the conversation. Alexis Tindall of the SA Museum has asked to be kept informed of our progress.
Bilby mentioned the current debate on WP over paid editing and perceived conflicts of interests, which he expects will be resolved soon.
Tullyis mentioned a small WP Editathon she organised recently at Flinders Uni.
I'd like to see meetups continue on a monthly basis. The suggestion is for an Editathon (not everyone likes the name) to be held in May (which is History Month), perhaps concentrating on a topic like North Terrace - the third Wednesday is the 21st. I will try to arrange a speaker for the 18 June meeting, if everyone is agreeable (I already have someone in mind to approach). Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 02:29, 20 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the welcome the other night and thanks to User:Pdfpdf for putting the invite on my talk page.

The small edit-a-thon I organised at Flinders was part of this broader event: Wikipedia:Meetup/ArtAndFeminism_2014, which had a lot of attendees worldwide and received a bit of press.

What do people have against the term edit-a-thon? I like it because it implies a collaborative, short-term burst of energy for a common goal. It doesn't imply a long commitment - which may put some off - nor a social purpose, though it has a social dimension. I think it's less intimidating than other ways of characterising a Wikipedia event. What might others suggest as an alternative?

This page has suggestions for Wikipedia:How_to_run_an_edit-a-thon. I think, whatever one calls it, a useful thing to do is have a worklist: a list of topics potential editors might turn to. It helps focus the mind and fire the imagination.

I can't make 21 May or 18 June (school governing council meetings with very set meeting dates). Any chance we could make it the 14th or 28th May? If not, I should be able to make July and August dates Tullyis (talk) 16:17, 20 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

May 14 is no good for me as I have commitments to various other committees, but the 28th would be OK. In general, the 2nd Tuesday, 2nd Wednesday, 3rd Thursday and 4th Tuesday of each month are out for me; and Thursdays in general aren't so good because of other bi-monthly meetings. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 21:56, 20 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Correction - actually, all Tuesdays are out for me (just remembered another commitment!), Thurdays not so bad - only the 3rd of the month, and the 1st in even-numbered months (plus occasional others, usually quarterly) are out for me. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 01:21, 22 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Future meetings

The suggestions so far favour Wednesday 28 May, there's been talk of having an edit-a-thon, and with History Month there's an opportunity for us all to go on a tour or event of some kind and come back with photos and fresh ideas. I've got a copy of the catalogue (available from local libraries visitor centres or councils), but haven't had a chance to look through it yet; but this weekend (3-4 May) there will be the chance to get inside buildings that aren't normally open to the public - see Open House Adelaide. (N.B. due to popularity, it may be necessary to book ASAP for particular tours to be sure of getting a place.)

If we lock in Wednesday 28 May for our edit-a-thon, with the same venue as before, we can now start a discussion to clarify some themes for the evening. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 14:24, 28 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've just been hesitant to disrupt the congregation for the sake of one participant so if more people are available on the third Wednesday you should go with that, but if 28 May works, I'm happy with that.Tullyis (talk) 08:36, 1 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Report on GLAM awareness-raising activities
I went to a very interesting lecture last night at the South Australian Museum by Professor Ian Owens (Natural History Museum, London, and Imperial College London) "For the learned and the curious: the role of natural history museums in the 21st century". I've uploaded my (admittedly very poor quality, especially the first couple of minutes) audio recording to Dropbox (38 MB, ! hr 22 mins). At the end of the lecture I took the opportunity to ask him whether the Natural History Museum has any involvement with GLAM-Wiki collaborations (my question starts at 1:07:40 on the recording) to which he gave a lengthy but somewhat digressive response, Afterwards I also spoke briefly with Brian Oldman, the new Director of the SAM. He was previously at the British Museum, so he is familiar with the GLAM concept, and said that a week or so ago the matter had been discussed at Board level at the SAM (presumably following my recent email to them publicising our last Meetup); I got the impression that, given the Government's budgetary constraints, they are still anxious to try to maximise any financial return, as well as wanting to maintain control over their material. (It's worth noting that earlier in his lecture, Ian Owens had pointed out that not everything that a museum has is of such high quality, that they can get much of a return from it!)
Thanks for the file, Bahudhara I look forward to listening Tullyis (talk) 08:36, 1 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Last week I spent a couple of hours over coffee with Darren Peacock, who is currently with the National Trust of SA. (His name had come up at our last Meetup; he knows Bilby through his earlier involvement with Wikimedia Australia, and Catherine Manning, through his earlier work for History SA.) He showed me the app he is working on for the Adelaide City Council, and I gave him an overview of the various projects I've been undertaking. It was a very good meeting, and it was nice to find that although we are working in different corners, as it were, we are both very much on the same page. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 03:28, 1 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Open House Adelaide - (see link above) places visited this weekend and photographed:
  • Thebarton Incinerator
  • Adelaide Mosque
  • Queen's Theatre (where I bumped into Catherine Manning again)
  • AMP Building
  • St Francis Xavier Cathedral
I've also taken some photos of the Thebarton Campus of the University of Adelaide, and am about to go on a tour of waste management facilities at Wingfield today - a topic that is very poorly covered in WP at present. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 22:38, 4 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Update: On Wednesday I have a meeting at Mt Barker at 4pm, but hope to get away by 6pm in time to get to North Tce by 7pm for our Meetup.

Bilby, can you confirm the availability of the venue? And Tullyis, since it was your suggestion that the evening's activity be an edit-a-thon, can you elaborate on how it should be run?

Over the past few weeks I've been taking photos of a number of historic buildings that I haven't yet uploaded to Commons - I imagine that doing it at UniSA will be much faster than via my home broadband connection, and that could be my contribution for the evening.

Despite the lack of postings to this thread over the past three weeks, there have been around 50 page views during this period. Although that's a low number in comparison to the high level of on-line interest prior to our April meetup, if we get even a few new editors coming, that would make it an interesting experience. Cheers, Bahudhara (talk) 01:14, 26 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

An edit-a-thon for an experienced group like this is simply coming along and doing the editing work there and then. For a more public event, it involves introducing people to the how-to side of Wikipedia and helping them overcome the perceived barriers of editing or creating pages. Participants bring their own ideas of what pages or sections they want to get started on or choose a topic suggested by someone else. I've got the Flinders History of South Australia, published 1986, and thought I might trawl it for ideas for new pages or new sections of pages. I'm trying to establish a series on the history of education in Australia with a focus on South Australia. Tullyis (talk) 02:25, 27 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Tullyis. Some of the photos I intend uploading overlap some of your interests - e.g. Murray House at UniSA's Magill campus, Barbara Hanrahan Lane sign at Mile End. Some of them can be used to populate the List of historic houses in South Australia, which has significant omissions such as Weetunga at Fulham, as well as related articles. I've currently got Gracious Homes of Colonial Adelaide on loan from my local library, and I can also bring my own copies of some local histories along.
