Changing username/Simple
This page is a forum in which users can request, and global renamers (including stewards) can consider and carry out, requests to rename accounts to usernames that are not yet taken on any Wikimedia project. While global renamers carry out renames, other users (including bots) help by "clerking" the mechanics of this process. If you wish to help as a clerk, please read the linked page carefully.

Instructions
For help 'vanishing' from Wikipedia,
please see courtesy vanishing.

Once you have decided on the name you would like:

  1. Read this page first. You must be aware of, and understand, all of that information before requesting a username change
  2. Check to make sure this username is not already in use. Do this by searching for the name here. If the name appears in the results, even if on another Wikimedia project, it is taken.
  3. Do not create an account under the new name or move/redirect your userpages. We'll do that for you.
  4. Log in with your present username in order to place your request. Renames will not be approved if the requester is not logged in.
  5. Click here to place your request.
    • Add your desired username after NEW=
    • Add a reason for the change after REASON=
    • Do not change anything after CURRENT=
  6. Make sure that you have spelt your desired name correctly, including capitalization and spacing. Save the page. If your request is submitted malformed, please remedy it according to this page.
  7. Check back on this page periodically to answer any questions that may arise regarding your request. Please be patient. It may take a few days for your request to be completed. If you do not answer any questions, your request may be declined due to no response.
  8. Once your request has been completed, please do not remove or change your request. It will be archived automatically by a bot.
  • Requests that do not adhere to these instructions or that are grossly malformed are subject to removal.

Important Notes After you are renamed...
  • Due to technical limitations, usernames may not start with a lowercase letter. However, you may use the template {{lowercase title}} on your user and user talk pages, and change your signature to reflect your preference.
  • Underscores and spaces are considered identical by the MediaWiki software.
  • Use of a company, organization, group, website, or product name as a username is prohibited by the username policy.
  • Please understand the implications of using your real name before requesting a name change to it.
  • ... your name will be changed to the new one in the page history of every page you've edited.
  • ... your userpage and any subpages will be moved to the new name automatically. Please do not attempt to move them yourself.
  • ... links left by your previous signatures will still point to the old userpage; however, a redirect will be left behind to your new userpage.
  • ... your request will be automatically moved to the archives in the interest of transparency.

Current requests

Headbomb → Gaetan Landry

Clerk note: To answer your questions: 1) Yes, they will be automatically moved during the rename and, 2) All your settings, watchlist, email, etc. will be preserved. Regards, Javért 04:42, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Bureaucrat note: Javert is correct. With your questions answered, would you like the rename to be done? —Anonymous DissidentTalk 04:44, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Not right now, but sometimes this week. I'll let you know when I'm ready for the switch. Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 04:44, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Bureaucrat note: Further you have over 30,000 edits, which does mean that there is a 50/50 chance a rename will break your account (usually some edits are not re-attributed, sometimes userrights or userpages need to be moved manually) that will require a developer to help fix. Just some knowledge. MBisanz talk 05:11, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • {{not done}} Headbomb will re-submit when ready. MBisanz talk 05:11, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't really see a need to "not done" this. Why can't it just sit here until he notes he's ready...? —Anonymous DissidentTalk 07:42, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well I suppose it could wait, I just figured if he is going to wait some indeterminate amount of time, we could clear off this request. MBisanz talk 06:33, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Bureaucrat note: Been a week now, any updates? MBisanz talk 07:06, 26 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Further on hold until this Friday. MBisanz talk 14:29, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Bureaucrat note: I've asked Headbomb to clarify the situation. It's been nearly two weeks since the original request so we need to sort this out, one way or another. The Rambling Man (talk) 22:18, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the lack of feedback, I seem to have unwatched this page for some reason. I've decided that for the moment, it would be better if I created that account myself, and make redirects to User:Headbomb. This way I'll protect this placeholder account, and will be able to switch in the future if my situation changes. Unless this is not within policy? Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 02:10, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't really see a problem with it, myself, given that the target is likely not to be registered anyway. The redirects are up to you. The rename is  Not done either way. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 14:24, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Isotype revisited → CBurke

Clerk note: It might be possible to get it so that there won't be any CoI tags when you edit that article. I'm not sure how it works; I've never been tagged with it when editing Soap, or when writing the word "soap" into other articles, and likewise I haven't had problems on my alternate account 3centsoap either, even when making edits like this. Would you still want to change your name anyway, even if the edit filter tags could be fixed? -- Soap Talk/Contributions 20:33, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Clerk note: The tag was added by this user: 98.248.33.198, it doesn't seem to be an automated event. Metty 23:24, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think there might be some confusion here between the edit filter tag and the warning that was placed on Isotype's talk page. I hadn't seen that before, and am not sure what either of them meant when they mentioned tags. -- Soap Talk/Contributions 23:28, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • From Isotype revisited (talk) 18:51, 22 September 2009 (UTC): I think that the CoI warning and initial CoI header tag (now removed) on the page Isotype (picture language) were triggered by my username being identical with that of a website in the external links of that page: www.isotyperevisited.org, which has just gone live and so can be checked for its neutrality. I can understand the principle of this, and don't want it to keep happening to me, given that my contributions under this username will generally all pertain to that subject. So it may be advisable to change my username.[reply]

Shivnath_thukral → Shivnath_Thukral

ShivnathWiki (talk) 10:40, 22 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The real name is already being used. I'd still like to hear a reason, though. —Anonymous DissidentTalk 21:52, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Um, current username isn't registered, their username is ShivnathWiki, not Shivnath_thukral MBisanz talk 04:11, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dutch weismann → Dutch Weismann

ElvenAmerican → Christian Benvenuto

Current: ElvenAmerican (I do not edit frequently, so I don't know the usertag trick) New: Christian Benvenuto —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.11.96.2 (talk) 13:57, 1 October 2009 (UTC) Reason: I want something that's more easy to remember, I know the conditions of using a real name on the internet. Yes, I do and will understand it. I've used my realname in several internet forums, and I've become a valued member in such communities. However, I am not a clerk or an adminstrator, so I will leave it to you. I also see that my realname is availiable, but I do not want to create another account in the fear of being accused as a sockpuppeteer. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.11.96.2 (talk) 13:55, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bureaucrat note: We can't perform the rename unless you log in as the account. However, you also don't have any real edits (just creating your userpage); you can just as easily register the new account and go about your business. EVula // talk // // 15:58, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ihlin0733 → Svgamer0733

Clerk note: You have only made one edit apart from this one. Would it not be simpler just to create that account? Renaming creates a slight but avoidable drain on the servers. Intelligentsium 00:26, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
