Manoj Kumar's patriotic drama Upkar was the biggest winner on the night, winning 7 awards, 4 for Manoj Kumar, including Best Film and Best Director. The smash hit 'Mere Desh Ki Dharti' from the film also won awards for its lyricist and singer.
