- 13 January – Singapore and Japan sign the Japan-Singapore Economic Agreement.
- 8 February - The Singapore MRT system commenced train services to and from Changi Airport via Tanah Merah interchange. It coincided with the death of former President Ong Teng Cheong who died from lymphoma cancer at 8:14pm on that very same day itself.
- 11 February - The Singapore flags flew at half mast for the very first time in history as a mark of respect to mourn the passing away of the nation's first elected President Ong Teng Cheong. It was considered very inauspicious by Chinese people since it coincided with Chinese New Year's Eve.
- 19 May - Singapore had its very first air-conditioned bus interchange at Toa Payoh, officially opened by then Minister for Transport, Mr Yeo Cheow Tong.
- 27 December – Two police officers, SI Ong Kah Kiong Anthony, 43, and his companion, SC/CPL Muhammad Syakir Bin Ishak, 22, dies when their patrol car was hit from the rear by a large garbage truck along Tanah Merah Ferry Road. The impact of the crash sent the patrol car off the road, flipping over and landing on its roof, with the trunk landing on top of the patrol car. Both officers, on normal supervisory rounds from the Changi Neighbourhood Police Centre of Bedok division, were crushed and killed on the spot.
