Jeļena Ostapenko is the defending champion.

Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki, Garbiñe Muguruza, Elina Svitolina, Karolína Plíšková and Caroline Garcia are in contention for the WTA no. 1 singles ranking at the start of the tournament.[1] Wozniacki will have the lead once the 2017 points are removed. In order to overtake her, Halep or Muguruza must reach at least the semifinals, and Svitolina, Plíšková or Garcia must win the title.

This tournament will mark the first time that Agnieszka Radwańska will not play at a main draw Grand Slam singles event since her debut at the 2006 Wimbledon Championships, ending a streak of 47 consecutive Grand Slam appearances.[2]

This will be Serena Williams' first Grand Slam appearance since the 2017 Australian Open and after giving birth to her daughter in September 2017. She will be unseeded in a Grand Slam singles event for the first time since the 2007 Australian Open. Williams is attempting to equal Margaret Court's all-time record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles. She will also be attempting to become only the second player, after Steffi Graf, to complete a quadruple career Grand Slam.[citation needed]
