The 56th British Film Awards, given by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts on 23 February 2003, honoured the best in film for 2002.
Roman Polanski's The Pianist won the award for Best Film and Best Director. The Warrior, directed by Asif Kapadia, was voted Best British Film of 2002. Nicole Kidman won the award for Best Lead Actress in The Hours. She went on to win the Academy Award. The same happened to Catherine Zeta-Jones (Chicago) as Best Supporting Actress. Daniel Day-Lewis won the award for Best Male Performer in a Leading Role in Gangs of New York.
