Sant'Angelo in Vado is a comune (municipality) about 90 kilometres (56 mi) west of Ancona and about 50 kilometres (31 mi) southwest of Pesaro. Its territory is crossed by the Metauro river.
The municipality borders with Apecchio, Belforte all'Isauro, Carpegna, Mercatello sul Metauro, Peglio, Piandimeleto, Urbania and Urbino.
History
It was the ancient Roman city of Tifernum Mataurense of which remarkable remains can be seen. The sumptuous Roman house "Domus of the Myth" was excavated from 2003,[3] a large noble house built towards the end of the 1st century AD. It has an area of approximately 1,000 m2 and 27 rooms, many embellished with a rich complex of figurative mosaics, mostly splendidly preserved.[4]
There were two periods when there was a Roman Catholic Diocese of Sant'Angelo in Vado, although the Diocese has been suppressed since 1986.
