[edit]- 1832 – After assembling the steam locomotive Delaware, Matthias W. Baldwin builds his first entirely new steam locomotive, named Old Ironsides.
20th century
[edit]- 1904 – New York City Subway's IRT Lenox Avenue Line opens south of the 145th Street station.
- 1937 – The Victorian Railways' Spirit of Progress (pictured), Australia's new luxury streamliner, commences regular service between Melbourne, Victoria, and Albury, New South Wales.
- 1959 – Kintetsu completes the gauge conversion of the Kambe Line from 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in) to 1,435 mm (4 ft 8+1⁄2 in) standard gauge.
21st century
[edit]- 2004 – The new Wisconsin Northern Railroad begins operations on leased Union Pacific Railroad (formerly Chicago and North Western Railway) and Canadian National Railway (formerly Wisconsin Central) tracks.
