Cycling career
Born in Unna, Zabel won the National Novice Track Championships in 2009, in the Madison event.[5] In 2010 he enjoyed more success in track events. 2011, at UCI Road World Championships Copenhagen, he was fifth in the road race in the juniors.
By summer of 2011 Zabel visited the Pierre-de-Coubertin sports gymnasium in Erfurt.[6] He left high school without a diploma, in order to sign his first professional contract with the You have called {{Contentious topics}}

On 6 May 2015, Zabel was named in BMC's team for the 2015 Giro d'Italia, giving him his first Grand Tour start.[10] On 7 July 2015, his father's 45h birthday, Zabel celebrated his first victory as a professional, winning stage 3 of the Tour of Austria.[11]
In June 2017, he was named in the startlist for the 2017 Tour de France.[12]
