Hoon Hay is an outer suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand, lying approximately 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) southwest of Cathedral Square, close to the Port Hills. It is named after Hoon Hay farm, near Hatton, Derbyshire.

Hillmorton and Spreydon lie to the north. Somerfield is to the east and Cashmere to the southeast. The hill suburb of Westmorland was developed to the south during the 1980s. To the west lies farmland then Halswell.

Hoon Hay valley is a rural valley approximately 2 km southwest of the suburb. Cashmere Stream, a tributary of the Heathcote River, flows down the valley.

Education

  • Hoon Hay School, a co-educational state contributing primary (years 1-6) school, had a roll of 440 as of 1 July  2019[2] and a decile rating of 7.[3]
  • Our Lady of the Assumption School, a co-educational state-integrated primary school (years 1-8), has a roll of 223 and a decile rating of 8.[4]
