The Old Guard is an upcoming American superhero film directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. Based on the comic book of the same name, the film will star Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The Old Guard is scheduled to be released on July 10, 2020, by Netflix.

Premise

The story focuses on a pack of mercenaries who are all centuries-old immortals able to heal from any wound. Just as they find another immortal has "awakened", they realize someone is onto their secret and have to fight for their freedom.

Development

In March 2017, Skydance Media picked up the rights to adapt the comic The Old Guard, written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Leandro Fernandez, into a film.[2] On July 2018, they hired Gina Prince-Bythewood to direct with Rucka adapt his comic book to the screenplay and Skydance's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger producing.[3] In March 2019, Netflix picked up worldwide rights to the film and agreed to finance it with Skydance. Charlize Theron joined the film and will also produce with Beth Kono, A.J. Dix, Marc Evans and Skydance's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger.[4]

Casting

KiKi Layne was confirmed to star in the film after Netflix picked up the rights. In May 2019, Marwan Kenzari, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Luca Marinelli joined the cast of the film.[5][6] In June 2019, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Harry Melling, and Veronica Ngo joined the cast of the film.[7]

Filming

Principal photography for the film began in Europe in mid-May 2019.[8][9]

Release

The film is scheduled to be released on July 10, 2020 on Netflix.[10]
