PredecessorŠkoda Rapid hatchback

The Škoda Scala is a small family car based on the concept Vision RS of Czech automaker Škoda Auto. The car is intended to fit between the Fabia and the Octavia, and to be a competitor to the cars in the volume hatchback segment, such as the Volkswagen Golf, Peugeot 308, Ford Focus and Opel/Vauxhall Astra.[1] Development lasted four years, the official premiere was held on December 6, 2018 in Tel Aviv, Israel.[2][3]

Configurator was launched in January 2019, and sales officially began in April.[4][5]

Name

Earlier, it was assumed that the new car would be called Felicia, Garde, Spaceback or Popular, however the name Scala was announced on October 15, 2018. Scala means "stairs" or "ladder" in Latin, according to the car maker it presents a big step forward in the compact car segment.

This name has already appeared several times in the past, the Renault Scala supermini, which was sold between 2012 and 2017, and the Zastava Skala, a small family car between 1971 and 2008.

The car is built on the MQB platform, it is a bit longer and wider than its predecessor Škoda Rapid hatchback. Technology used in the car is expected to include features that have so far only been found in higher segment vehicles.[6]

It is the first Škoda car with a constant internet connection, and will be equipped with 10,2" digital instrument panel, 9,2" center screen, 15" to 18" wheels, blind spot monitor which senses cars up to 70 meters, lane, front and park assist, crew protect assist, rear traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and 467 litre boot space.[7][5]

Selected acknowledgements

The Škoda Scala received the Red Dot Design Award for March 2019.[8] In the leading automobile magazine in Germany, Auto Bild, the Scala defeated its rivals, the Mazda3, the Ford Focus, and even the Volkswagen Golf.[9]

Engines

The Scala is available with a range of three turbocharged petrol engines, ranging from 1.0 to 1.5 litres (70 to 110 kW), and one turbocharged diesel 1.6 TDI (85 kW). During 2019, there is also one CNG version added.[10][11]
