Softball will be featured at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo for the first time since the 2008 Summer Olympics.[1] The tournament will consist of six teams. Baseball/softball is one of five sports added to the program of the 2020 Summer Olympics only, with no guarantee it will return in 2024.
It was originally scheduled to be held in 2020, but on 24 March 2020, the Olympics were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[2]
Competition format
The softball tournament will feature a single round-robin of the six teams followed by a bronze medal game and a gold medal game. 17 games will be played in total.[3][4]
Six teams will qualify, including Japan, which, as host nation, qualifies automatically. The United States team won the 2018 Women's Softball World Championship to qualify for the Olympics as word champions. The remaining four spots were allocated through three qualification tournaments: one spot for a Europe/Africa tournament, one spot for an Asia/Oceania tournament, and two spots for an Americas tournament.[5] Italy, Mexico, Canada, and Australia qualified by winning those tournaments.
