Nhooph Al-Areebi (born November 23, 1994)[4] is a Canadian professional wrestler currently signed to WWE under the ring name Aliyah,[6] performing on their developmental territory NXT. She had previously wrestled on the independent circuit under the ring name Jasmin Areebi.

Early life

Nhooph Al-Areebi was born in Toronto, Ontario.[9] She is of Arab descent and grew up in a strict, conservative family.[7][10] In 2012, she graduated from St. Joseph's College School, and later attended George Brown College, where she studied nursing.[10] She also attended a circus training school.[7]

Professional wrestling career

Early career (2013–2015)

Aliyah wrestled on the independent circuit under the name 'Jasmin Areebi, debuting for Squared Circle Wrestling (SCW) in Toronto in January 2013. She wrestled for a variety of promotions in Canada and the United States, including Pure Wrestling Association (PWA), Absolute Intense Wrestling (AIW), and New England Championship Wrestling (NECW).[6]

WWE

NXT (2015–present)

On March 17, 2015, it was reported that Aliyah had signed a developmental contract with WWE.[6] Her signing was confirmed by WWE on April 13.[1] Aliyah made her first appearance for WWE's developmental brand NXT at the NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable event on May 20, as part of Tyler Breeze's entrance.[11] Areebi made her in-ring debut on June 20 during an NXT house show, where she competed in a six-Diva tag team match.[12] In October, she was given the ring name Aliyah.[3]

Aliyah's televised debut took place on the January 13, 2016, episode of NXT, where she competed in a number one contender's battle royal for Bayley's NXT Women's Championship, which was won by Carmella.[13] Aliyah returned on the April 27 episode of NXT, where she worked as a jobber and competed on her first singles televised match, losing to Carmella[14] and made her third television appearance four months later on the August 3 episode of NXT, losing to the NXT Women's Champion Asuka in a non-title match.[15] On the August 31 episode of NXT, she debuted a new style and theme, leaving her Arabian gimmick, however, through her next television appearances, Aliyah continued working as a jobber and reached a streak of losses.[16][17] On the October 26 episode of NXT, she achieved her first live victory by defeating Billie Kay following a distraction provided by Liv Morgan, before her and Morgan were attacked by the heels, Kay and Peyton Royce.[18] On the November 16 episode of NXT, Aliyah along with Ember Moon saved Morgan after another attack provided by Kay and Royce.[19] This resulted in a six-women tag team match at NXT TakeOver: Toronto that was taped and aired for the November 23 episode of NXT, in which Aliyah, Moon and Morgan defeated Kay, Royce and their mysterious partner Daria Berenato.[20]

Personal life

Aliyah first decided she wanted to become a wrestler after watching Beth Phoenix and Mickie James perform at a taping of Raw on May 5, 2008. Her favorite wrestlers include Edge and Jeff Hardy.[7]

In September 2015, a number of racially insensitive comments made several years prior on Aliyah's Twitter account were discovered by fans. WWE subsequently issued a statement regarding the controversy, stating that her account was used by another person at the time.[21]
