The Men's Marathon at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea was held on Sunday October 2, 1988. The race started on 14.30h local time. A total number of 98 athletes completed the race, with Polin Belisle from Belize finishing in last position in 3'14:02. There were 118 competitors from 70 countries. Twenty of them did not finish.
Gary Fanelli of the United States moved to Tafuna, American Samoa six months prior to the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul in order to coach and attain his Olympic eligibility for America Samoa.[1] Fanelli's time of 2:25:35, good for 51st place, is an American Samoan national record.[2]
