The Bon Appétit Management Company is a Palo Alto, California-based on-site restaurant company,[1] owned by Compass Group,[2] that provides café and catering services to corporations, colleges and universities. The company operates over 500 cafes in 32 states.[3][4] Princeton Review has named Bon Appétit the "No. 1 College Food Service in the Country" for several years.[5]

Bon Appétit has developed programs with Environmental Defense, the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch, the Humane Society of the United States, and other conservation organizations.[6] It promotes the use of compostable materials.[7]

Bon Appétit buys at least 20% and often more of its meat, vegetables, and other products within a 150-mile (240 km) radius. Food waste is composted each week and distributed to area farms.[8] This is done using a Farm to Fork initiative, started in 1999.[9][10]

The company's conservation efforts have resulted in recognition from the Ecological Society of America in 2005,[11] The Humane Society of the United States in 2005,[12] and the Seafood Choices Alliance in 2007.[13]

On February 18, 2013, Bon Appetit terminated an employee for selling Girl Scout Cookies while on the job. Tracy Lewis, the terminated employee, who had worked for a variety of food service companies at American University for the past 28 years, claimed that she had sold the cookies on behalf of her 12-year-old daughter for the past three years without incident. Bon Appetit claimed that she had committed gross misconduct and violated company policy by selling unauthorized goods.[14][15][16]
