Boryspil (Ukrainian: Бориспіль, translit. Boryspil’, Russian: Борисполь; also referred to as Borispol) is a city located in the Kiev Oblast (province) in northern Ukraine. Serving as the administrative center of the Boryspil Raion (district), the city itself is also designated as a separate raion within the oblast.

The current estimated population is around 53,400 (as of 2004).

Although known as a settlement since at least 1154 and known under the modern name since 1590, it was not until 1956 that the place was received a city status. Currently the town is home to the country's main airport, Boryspil International Airport (international code KBP) and some minor industry.

It also hosts Ukrainian Premier League team Arsenal Kyiv at the Kolos Stadium.

Name

The name of the city is of the Greek origin. It consists of two parts Borys from Borysthenes (the Greek name for Dnieper) and Pil from Polis (the Ukrainized version of the Greek word).

Economy

Aerosvit Airlines has its head office on the grounds of Boryspil International Airport.[1]
