CPC Cine Awards is an annual awards' ceremony for movies in Malayalam film industry, which is crowd-sourced and hosted by a group of movie aficionados by the name Cinema Paradiso Club [1] [2].
History
Cinema Paradiso Club, and also known as CPC, was formed by a group of cinephiles in the year 2010 in Kerala, India. Several actors and technicians from the industry like Indrajith Sukumaran, Aashiq Abu, Lijo Jose Pellissery, Abrid Shine, Saiju Kurup, Midhun Manuel Thomas, Syam Pushkaran, Neeraj Madhav etc also became an active part of the group, and most of them openly accepted criticisms.
The idea of honoring the best performances in malayalam cinema evolved in mid-2015. The first crowd-sourced CPC Cine Awards was announced in the year 2016 for the movies released in 2015 in malayalam film industry as CPC Cine Awards 2015. Though the awards were announced, it was not awarded in person to the winners, in an official ceremony.
CPC Cine Awards 2016, that was announced in January 2017 had much more participation from the members of the group than the previous year. Similar to the previous year, the combination of votes from members and the score from the jury was used for declaring the winners. On 19 February 2017, the awards were distributed to the winners in a ceremony held at Kochi[3][4][5]
CPC Cine Awards 2017, was announced in January 2018, to honor the best cinematic performances for Malayalam films released during the year 2017. A major change in polling system was that the poll was open to the public, which in the previous years were restricted to the members of the club.[6]. Also, a new category was included this year, the award for The Best Editor, for which the winner was selected by the jury panel alone, without considering the members' vote. Similar to the previous year, the Special Honorary Award, was selected by special committee and was awarded to K. G. George for his contributions to Malayalam cinema[7]. The winners were declared and announced to the public on 27th of January 2018 [8][9][10]
CPC Memento
The memento given to the winners is made out of Rose Wood, which has a rectangular shape, 25 cm tall, 7 cm wide, and is fitted with the logo of Cinema Paradiso Club engraved in a round piece of brass of radius 4.5 cm at the front-facing top section. The front-facing midsection of the memento is engraved using the human hand with the category name in English and awardee's name in Malayalam. The bottom section of the wood is inscribed as CPC Cine Awards along with the year of the award. The third edition of CPC Cine Awards used this memento instead of the statuette which was presented in the second edition of CPC Cine Awards
The memento presented in the second edition of CPC Cine Awards was a statuette, for nine categories of excellence which excluded the Special Honorary Award. The bottom of the statuette had the name of the winner along with the category.
The Special Honorary Award is a memento which has the photograph of the awardee and nameplate fitted to it at the bottom which has not changed its geometry since inception
Awards ceremonies
CPC Cine Awards 2015 had no official ceremony for distribution of awards to winners. In this year, the Best Actor Award was awarded to Prithviraj and the Best Actress Award was grabbed by Parvathy. While Madhu Neelakandan was awarded for the Best Cinematography, Rajesh Murugesan got the award for the Best Music Director
CPC Cine Awards 2016 award ceremony was held on 19 February 2017 at Cochin Palace Hotel, Kochi. Since it was a crowd sourced event, the program did not invite much media attention initially. The reactions from award winners like Vinayakan, Rajisha Vijayan, Indrans, Manikandan R Achari, Dileesh Pothan, Syam Pushkaran etc. made the news and as such awards received some media attention[3][4][5][11]. The awards were distributed by actor Jayasurya, producer turned actor Vijay Babu etc.
CPC Cine Awards 2017 award ceremony was held on 18 February 2017 at IMA House, Kochi.[12][13][14] [15] Similar to the previous year, the event was crowdsourced. The event's major draw was honouring veteran filmmaker K G George. He was draped with a ‘ponnada’(shawl) by filmmakers Sathyan Anthikad, Sibi Malayil and Kamal.[13] The function was graced by technicians and artists like Bijibal, Sreebala K. Menon, Basil Joseph, Sunil Ibrahim, Aju Varghese, Nazriya Nazim, Antony Varghese, Rajisha Vijayan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Govind Menon etc. The awards were distributed in the presence of more than 1,000 spectators who were also members of the Cinema Paradiso Club. Also a documentary film by the name '8 ½ Intercuts – Life and Films of K G George' that was based life and career of KG George was screened at the event.[12][15]
