Cerritos High School, also called CHS, is a high performing, comprehensive, 4 year public high school located in Cerritos, California, serving grades 9-12. It is part of the ABC Unified School District. According to US News Report 2013, CHS is ranked #38 in California, and #237 in the nation. The All Male Dance Drill Team captured the 2013 United Spirit Association Nationals Competition recently at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, and the Dance Drill Team, Song and Yell Girls Pep squads have consistently ranked #1 nationally. In 2013, the Cerritos High Model United Nations team moved up from a national ranking of 9, to top 5 in the nation, according to bestdelegate.com. "Cerritos moves up to the top five with its strongest performance in recent years and won the most delegation awards of any team this year. Besides a split weekend success of a Best Class Delegation at BMUN and an Award of Excellence at NHSMUN, Cerritos won Best Large Delegation awards at BruinMUN, UCIMUN, DavisMUN, Surf City MUN, and EHSMUN. The team also won awards at NAIMUN, MVHSMUN, and McKennaMUN and attended RHSMUN. The team also hosted CHSMUN which has rapidly increased in size." In 2014, Cerritos claimed the boys and girls CIF Southern Section swim team title at CIF-Southern Section Division IV swim meet at Riverside Community College. The 2014 title marks the second straight for the Lady Dons and the second in school history. The boys team added to the two championships won back in 2000 and 2001.

History

Cerritos High School began its history in September 1971 by sharing the campus of nearby Gahr High School. Rapidly increasing student population during the 1970s prompted the construction of its current campus, located across the street from the Civic Center, Cerritos Library, and Cerritos Sheriffs Station in 1973.

Academics

CHS has been ranked in the top 1000 high schools in the United States by Newsweek for the past four years.[when?][citation needed] It is one of the top Model United Schools in the entire nation. Also, in the Washington Report 2013, Cerritos High was included in the top 50 most challenging high schools in California. According to Best Delegate' America's Best High School MUN teams rankings, Cerritos High was rank 9 of all high schools in America in 2011-2012, and moved to within top 5 in nation in 2013. In 2012, Cerritos High School was ranked 204 nationally and 38 in California, according to U.S. News & World Report. The school also has a college readiness index of 59.6. Cerritos High was one of the 100 schools named to the California Business for Education Excellence Foundation’s 2007 Honor Roll.[citation needed] Also, in September 2008, LA Magazine named Cerritos High School to its Honor Roll with 47 other high schools.[citation needed] CHS consistently scores over the 850 benchmark on the state’s Academic Performance Index.[4] The AP® participation rate at Cerritos High School is 73 percent. It has a state API rank of 10 out of 10 and an 869 API Score for 2011. It sends many students into the UC and Cal State system every year, particularly University of California-Irvine and California State University Long Beach. Both Cal State Long Beach and UC Irvine have special service area agreements with Cerritos High so the number of admitted applicants are generally much higher than that of other local schools.
