Synopsis

The series revolves around a young boy named Clarence, who is optimistic about everything, as well as his friends, Jeff and Sumo.

Main characters

Clarence
Voiced by Skyler Page – Main protagonist, Clarence is an energetic, loving kid who will have fun with anyone. He views everyone as his friend, no matter who they are or how much they dislike him. He does whatever it takes to find fun! Clarence is the glue that holds Jeff and Sumo together, since the two would not typically be friends without Clarence there to bridge the gap in their personalities.
Jeff
Voiced by Sean Giambrone – Clarence's new best friend at his school. His head is shaped like a cube. Jeff is very cleanly and organized. He has a particular reason for everything he does and is very calculated. He enjoys watching game shows and playing along with them, and while he carries himself as a very studious intelligent person, most of his knowledge is trivial.
Sumo
Voiced by Tom Kenny (Jason Marsden, pilot) – Clarence's best friend who is rough and tumble. He formerly had long, messy blonde hair until Clarence shaved it off in the pilot. Sumo is not afraid to get dirty and is fairly street-smart for a kid. He can be hyperactive and spontaneous.
Mary
Voiced by Katie Crown – Clarence's mom. She loves Clarence very much, though she seems to be somewhat of a distracted mother.
Chad
Voiced by Eric Edelstein – Mary's live-in boyfriend. Chad is a free-loader and can often be found at home wearing cut-off jeans. Though he doesn't seem to provide for their family, he is a good friend to Clarence and fills the role of a father in his life.
Belson
Voiced by Roger Craig Smith (Jason Marsden, pilot) – A rich bully who is mean to Clarence, more known to throw a sarcastic quip than a punch. He secretly thinks Clarence is "cool", although he would never admit it.
Amy Gillis
Voiced by Ava Acres – A girl who enjoys Clarence's company. She seems to do things that girls don't usually do, like have wars or fights, making her a tomboy. She often rides her bike around town. In her first appearance she says she is going to be in the fifth grade in her next year in school and might be moving soon, and is uncertain if she will be living with her mom or dad, a subtle hint that her parents are divorcing and in a custody battle.

Recurring characters

Mrs. Lily Bernstein
Voiced by Katie Crown – Clarence's teacher.
Nathan
Voiced by Skyler Page  The dim-witted friend of Belson and Clarence.
Dustin
Voiced by Kyle Arem – One of Belson's friends. He seems to enjoy karate and martial arts.
Percy
Voiced by Roger Craig Smith  - One of Belson's friends. He is short, wimpy, and speaks in a very squeaky voice.
Ashley
Voiced by Anastasia James  - One of Clarence's friends. She's into arts and crafts, shown by her creating a papercraft snowflake. She easily succumbs to peer pressure.
Hector
Voiced by Sean Giambrone  - A nerdy boy who is one of Clarence's friends. He is very intelligent, and uses a calculator. He once helped Clarence to make his own form of currency in the episode "Clarence's Millions".
Kimberly (Kimby)
Voiced by Maddison Cray – A girl who loves ducks and plush toys. She seems to like to play with Clarence.
Dennis
Voiced by Frank Welker  - Clarence's pet dog.
Chelsea
Voiced by Grace Kaufman  - One of the girls in Clarence's class. Her teasing scares Clarence and Jeff, but is a soothing balm for Sumo.
Allison
voiced by Jackie Buscarino  - One of the girls in Clarence's class. She is shown to be good freinds with Chelsea, though they can get into fights sometimes.
Sean
A very shy Asian boy. He was first seen in "Fun Dungeon Face Off".
Guntler
One of Clarence's classmates. He has a big nose, no neck, and his mouth is covered by his shirt. He doesn't speak, and is mainly used for background roles.

Development

The series is created by Skyler Page, a former storyboard artist for the Cartoon Network series Adventure Time and storyboard revisionist for Secret Mountain Fort Awesome.[2] Page, inspired by the likes of David Byrne, Mark Twain, Alexander Payne and Mike White,[3] developed the series at Cartoon Network Studios in 2012 as part of their animated short development initiative.[1] Spencer Rothbell, a writer for the series, explained that Page wished to create a show "that felt more naturalistic in tone, something that evoked the cartoons we grew up with in the [1990s] combined with a more modern sensibility".[4] He ultimately stated that "It's all about empowering kids and having fun", with the writers working in references to popular culture that either inspired them or fit a particular genre of an episode.[4]

The series marks the fourth graduate of the CalArts to receive a show on the network.[5][6] The series, along with two other upcoming original series, Uncle Grandpa and Steven Universe, were announced to the public during the network's 2013 upfront.[7] The series was also previewed at the 2013 San Diego Comic-Con International, along with the latter two series.[8] The network has commissioned twelve 15-minute episodes,[1] and aired the pilot following the 2014 Hall of Game Awards show on February 17, 2014.[9]

Reception

Ratings

The series premiere attracted approximately 2.3 million viewers, ranking first in its 7 p.m. time slot among all cable and broadcast television networks for kids and boys aged 2 to 11, 6 to 11 and 9 to 14.[10]

Critical reception

Clarence has received positive critical reception; USA Today's Whitney Matheson found the series "right up [her] alley" upon viewing a trailer released by the network. She further opined that "it blends just the right amount of humor, weirdness and optimism."[11] TV Guide's Nivea Serrao found the series to follow the main character's life in a similar vein to modern children's cartoons skewing "towards the fantastic, with characters going on wild, and often elaborate adventures."[4] Variety writer Brian Lowry wrote that the series was "nice to see" with its "genuine creative spark and relative lack of cynicism", compared to the "TV market ... glutted with cheeky animation".[12]

Accolades

The series' pilot episode was nominated for a Creative Arts Emmy Award at the 65th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony, hosted on September 15, 2013.[13]
