Darren Michael Collison (born August 23 1987) is an American basketball player who currently plays for the New Orleans Hornets. He was drafted 21st overall in the 2009 NBA Draft by New Orleans. He is a right-hander and a native of Rancho Cucamonga, California. Collison was widely considered to be one of the top point guard prospects in the 2009 NBA Draft coming out of UCLA.[1]
He was awarded the MVP of the Maui Invitational Tournament in December 2006 and was named the Pacific 10 Conference Player of the Week on December 4, 2006, and again on February 18, 2007. His parents Dennis and June (Griffith) were both elite track and field athletes for Guyana.[2]
Collison grew up as a fan of the University of Arizona, but was not recruited by Arizona, and chose UCLA over San Diego State University[3] to serve as a backup to Jordan Farmar in the 2005–06 season. Collison became the starting point guard the following season.
Career
College career
Collison is known for both his speed and his defensive ability on both ends of the court.[citation needed] During the 2006–07 season, he averaged 2.2 steals per game—the most in the Pacific 10 Conference.[2] He also averaged 5.7 assists (2nd in the Pac 10), as well as a three-point shooting percentage of 44.7 percent.[4] Although Collison was expected by many experts to be a first round pick in the 2007 NBA draft[citation needed], he returned to UCLA for his junior year.
For the 2007–08 season, he has improved his three-point shooting percentage to 51.7 percent, a school record for a single season.[5] He also averaged 87 percent from the free throw line for the season.[6]
NBA Career
Collison declared himself eligible for the 2009 NBA Draft. He was drafted 21st overall by the New Orleans Hornets.
