Untitled

Detox is the upcoming third and final studio album by American hip hop artist Dr. Dre, set to be released in 2010 on Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records. It was originally due for a 2004 release, but was not completed because Dr. Dre wanted to concentrate on producing for artists that were on his Aftermath Entertainment record label,[2] the album is slated for a late fall[3] 2010 release.[4] Dr. Dre has stated that this will be his final album.[5][6]

Background

Work for the album dates back to early 2003,[7] but later in that year he decided to stop working on the album to focus on producing for other artists. The album had initially been set for a fall 2005 release.[8]

On February 18, 2007, Dr. Dre revealed to Power 106 radio station that he had completed eighteen potential tracks for the album.[9] He plans to have twelve or thirteen songs in the final version, with each one being a single.[10] He also announced that the introductory track is titled "Intervention".[9] However, Bishop Lamont stated that the album will include more than thirteen tracks.[5]

In an interview, 50 Cent was asked about Detox, in which he spoke of his collaborations and Dr. Dre's progress, stating:

He's working on it. I've recorded two songs for him. He's such a perfectionist. But sometimes that can be a bad thing. You create new pressure when you wait that long. When you put a new album against the last two classics, people will scrutinize it if they become impatient.[11]

On September 9, 2007, before presenting the award for Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards, Dr. Dre stated that Detox will be released.[12][13] Dre later revealed to Hillary Crosley of Billboard magazine that Detox would be his final album.[14] In February 2008, Bishop Lamont also announced a second "Up in Smoke Tour" to begin shortly after the album.[15]

In May 2008, AllHipHop.com reported that rumors spread about Detox being completed.[16] That same month, Detox and Eminem's new studio album were revealed to be released for the fourth quarter of 2008.[17] In an interview with Defsounds, Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo stated that they are unsure if they will appear on Detox. They stated that 50 Cent has recorded about three songs for Detox.[18] In an interview with the website DubCNN.com, rapper The D.O.C. also said that fellow N.W.A. members Ice Cube and MC Ren would most likely not be guests on the album.[19] Although Ice Cube later stated in August 2008 that he is likely to be featured on the album.[20]

In June 2008, Snoop Dogg announced that Detox was completed and that Dre is looking for the right songs for the album. He also said it would be worth the wait.[21][22][23] During the same month, Dr. Dre revealed that he was aiming to release the album in November or December 2008. He said "I'm just now, over the last couple of months, starting to feel that it's going to be right and it's something I can be proud of, and everybody is going to love it". Dr. Dre also talked about the drum work on the album that is derived from live instrumentation, saying "We have an entirely new thing going with the drums that's incredible and we're still developing that".[24]

On August 6, 2008 it was reported that Dr. Dre and Drinks Americas made a joint venture to release a drink called "Aftermath Cognac" within the next 60 days. According to Drinks Americas, this drink would be introduced at the same time as the Detox album as part of a marketing plan.[25]

In an interview with Loud.com, DJ Quik revealed that Dr. Dre has recorded around 400 songs for the album, and he himself had heard about 60 of them. He also revealed that Dre has been getting piano lessons from Burt Bacharach and has been reinterpreting "symphony stuff" by Frederic Chopin for Detox.[26]

Dr. Dre told MTV in December 2008 that the album will be released after Eminem's Relapse, which was released in May 2009 and 50 Cent's Before I Self Destruct which was released in November 2009.[27] In an interview with FLOW 93.5 in January 2009, Canadian producer Boi-1da revealed that he's also working on Detox.[28] A month earlier, Dr. Dre appeared on the remix of "Set It Off" by Kardinal Offishall, produced by Boi-1da.[29] Canadian rapper Drake, a friend of Boi-1da, also worked on the album.[30]

He premiered the first official snippet of Detox in a Dr. Pepper commercial that debuted on May 28, 2009.[31] 50 Cent and Eminem asserted in an interview on BET's 106 & Park that Dr. Dre had about ten songs finished for Detox.[32] Southern rapper Ludacris stated in an interview that he had done ghostwriting for Dr. Dre's record.[33] T.I., Lil Wayne, and Drake have also been believed to be ghost-writing for the album.[34] In an interview with The D.O.C., he confirmed that the album was planned to be completed by November 2009,[35] with Dr. Dre later announcing that he hopes to release the album in 2010.[36] However, in January 2010 during an interview with Slam, Dr. Dre revealed that the album would not be released until 2011. "Well, I'm working on it, but also I've been working on other people's projects; you'll probably hear something in a year or so."[4] However, in April 2010, CNBC interviewed Dre and Jimmy Iovine to promote new Beats headphones, when asked about Dre's Detox record, he stated that he would "finally release it this year".[37] In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Ice Cube said that Dr. Dre is working on Detox and he will be featured on the album.[38] In interview with DJ Skee, Scott Storch stated that "Detox is only three songs away for completion."[39] Singer Kokane confirmed that he has worked with Dre and Aftermath producers Chocolate and DJ Silk on the album; he also reported that New Jersey rapper Redman was in the studio with the artists at the time of the recording.[40] It was revealed in late August, that producer Scott Storch had been working with Dre on the album in L.A, since January.[41] In September, Dre opened up about his relationship with 50 Cent, saying that although they are on good terms, he hasn't spoken to him in a while, and hopes to work on this album with him again.[42] Dr. Dre touched on speculation that he recorded a tribute to his son who died in 2008.

While he does admit that he has recorded material in honor of his son, he doesn't know if it will be suitable for 'Detox' as the album is set to have an upbeat feel:

"I'm actually back and forth about that. I'm leaning towards no because I don't know if I want to put myself or my family through that. I kind of want the record to stay fun. Right now as we speak, I'm leaning towards no. Though I do have a couple of things that I've done for him."[43]

Singles

The first single, titled "Under Pressure", featuring Jay-Z and co-produced with Scott Storch, was confirmed by Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre during an interview at Fenway Park before the first MLB game of the season.[44][45] Dr. Dre stated that he would like Interscope to release the record within two weeks of the announcement.[37] In May 2010 Dr. Dre also said that "Under Pressure's" release was pushed back due to Eminem's single being released ahead of time.[46]

In an interview Storch stated that Dr. Dre was looking for the right hook for the single "Under Pressure". Scott Storch goes on to say that the hook is now ready and chosen.[47]

In May 2010, Dr. Dre told Rap Up magazine that the first single, "Under Pressure" featuring Jay-Z, is going to be released "next month" and the album in fall 2010.[1]

On June 16, 2010 an unmastered, unmixed version of "Under Pressure" with no chorus leaked onto the Internet.[48] Dr. Dre later talked about the leak saying

"I didn't get a chance to finish the record, the vocals are real rough, it's not blended right and there's not even a hook on the song. It's not done, the music's not done, it's just one of those things we have to deal with today in this business because of technology and all of that. It's real easy for somebody to steal your shit so what can you do?"[49]

Music

Concept

At one point, Dr. Dre had intended for Detox to be a concept album. In an interview with MTV in 2002, Dr. Dre stated,

I'm not talking about low riders and blunts and all that anymore… I mean, that's played. As a matter of fact, I'm tired of hearing other people talk about it, to tell you the truth… I had to come up with something different but still keep it hardcore, so what I decided to do was make my album one story about one person and just do the record through a character's eyes, and everybody that appears on my album is going to be a character, so it's basically going to be a hip-hop musical.[50]

Dr. Dre first mentioned Detox to the press around 2000, and since that time various producers and vocalists have contributed with potential tracks.[51] Dr. Dre bought a beat for Detox from producer J. R. Rotem in 2003, going so far as to record a track, "It Ain't a Thing". In January 2004, co-producer Scott Storch listed guest appearances by 50 Cent, Eminem, D12, The Game, Guvner, Knoc-turn'al, Lloyd Banks, and Snoop Dogg.[52] A XXL article released shortly thereafter listed many of the same performers, along with Mary J. Blige.[53] Aftermath-affiliated producers Dawaun Parker, Hi-Tek, Denaun Porter, DJ Khalil, and Focus are also working with Dr. Dre.[54][55][56] When asked about Detox by dubcnn.com, Devin the Dude claimed to have accepted an invitation to record for the album.[57] Mike Elizondo has recorded bass guitar parts for Detox.[58] An interview with Billboard revealed that J. R. Rotem will produce for the album.[59] RZA announced that he co-produced a track with Dr. Dre that features Marsha Ambrosius, which could be on Detox.[60] MP3.com has reported that Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg have also contributed to the album.[61] Jay-Z and Warren G stated that they worked with Dr. Dre.[62][63] In October 2009, MTV News reported that Dre had reached out to Jay-Z asking him to record for Detox.[34] In March 2005, Aftermath producer Mel-Man said that Dr. Dre and himself have made hundreds of beats for Detox.[64] In July 2008, it was confirmed that Nas, Jay-Z, and Lil Wayne will be among guests on the album.[24] In August 2008, Ice Cube also stated he is likely to be featured.[20] In October 2008, Dr. Dre's former assistant, Bruce Williams, said Fergie might be featured on the album.[65] It has been said that T.I. has been working on the project.[66] It has recently been announced that Dr. Dre has been working in the studio with fellow Compton rapper Game on both Detox and Game's upcoming album titled The R.E.D album. A picture was posted on Game's twitter showing himself and Dr. Dre as well as Snoop Dogg in the studio with the title reading "Can You Say Detox?" this was later confirmed by both Dr. Dre and Snoop.[67] Aftermath Producer DJ Khalil, has also been co-producing tracks on the album that feature his R&B singer protoge Kobe.[68][69] Also in August, it was revealed that Dre had hired R&B singer Rico Love, as a ghost writer and collaborator for the album.[70]

Numerous people have claimed, or been seen in the studio with Dr. Dre working on the album, including Eminem, Snoop Dogg[71], Jay-Z[72][73], Game[74], Ice Cube[75][76], Lady Gaga[77], Ashanti[78], Busta Rhymes[79], Common[80], R. Kelly[81], Raekwon[82], T.I., Kardinal Offishall, Ester Dean[83][84], Pharrell,[85] Lil Kim,[86] and Lloyd.[87]
