Dougie Poynter

Dougie Lee Poynter[1] (born 30 November 1987[2] in Corringham, Essex, England) is bass player and backing vocalist for the British pop rock/pop punk band McFly, along with fellow band members Danny Jones, Tom Fletcher and Harry Judd. McFly rose to fame after the release of their first single, "Five Colours In Her Hair", which reached #1 in the charts, as did their following debut album Room On The Third Floor. They were also helped by former band (and friends) Busted who invited them to tour with them, as support act, in October 2003 (on their A Ticket For Everyone tour). Poynter is the youngest member of the band, being only fifteen when he joined.

Biography

Poynter performs onstage at T4 Beach in Weston Super Mare.

Early life and Pre-McFly

Dougie Poynter was born in Orsett Hospital in the town of Corringham, Essex. He also has a younger sister named Jazzie. Young Dougie was also afraid of the dark and fire and still is. In his paragraph in the 'thankyou's booklet', available with the 2007 (McFLY) Greatest Hits album, Poynter claims that he was a month premature, stating: 'The mother goose otherwise known as Sam or Mother to my sibling, carried me aboard herself for approximately 8 months...' At the tender age of 12, Dougie looked to his inspirations Tom Delonge and Mark Hoppus of Blink182 and took up bass guitar. Before McFly, Dougie was in a band called Atiaz that had a punky Blink 182 sound to them. To symbolise that Blink 182 was his favourite band, he had a shrine of them above his own bed. Dougie's favourite food is seadfood and Greek food and Dougie is reported to have even speaked fluent Greek when he was three years old. The first concert that Dougie went to see was a Wet Wet Wet concert. Poynter's favourite film was Bill and Ted - he couldn't get enough of the film. Dougie has two dogs (Fraser and Maggie), Two lizards (Zukie and Buffy) and even a frog (Ned). Dougie is also reported to have said that he plans to rescue a pair of Iguanas. Dougie attended Gable Hall School Arts College in his home town and was a very shy boy. Poynter even described himself as a loser. At the age of 15, Dougie's attension was drawn to an audition for a bassist and drummer in a new band in a magazine called NME and decided to try out. Little did Poynter know that the audition was being held by Tom Fletcher, a song writer at the time and the popular boy band Busted. Dougie later went on to win the slot for the bassist (and Harry Judd won the slot for the drummer). Danny Jones was one of Tom's friends and they both had written songs together before so, Danny got a place for a lead guitarist and vocals and thats how McFly was born.

McFly

Poynter performs with McFly.

Poynter plays the bass guitar, provides backing vocals and occasionally has vocal and instrumental solos. Poynter also co-wrote (with Tom Fletcher) 'Transylvania' (however Fletcher admitted the song was 'Dougie's baby') the double A-side to 'Baby's Coming Back'.

Television and film appearances

Poynter has appeared alongside his McFly bandmates in many TV shows. In January 2005, they guest-starred in an episode of the long-running British drama series Casualty,[3] and in 2007 made a cameo on the Doctor Who episode "The Sound of Drums".[4] They also appeared on Ghosthunting with...[5] and Gordon Ramsay's The F Word.[citation needed]

Poynter has appeared with McFly at many televised music events, including T4 on the Beach and the first annual Nickelodeon UK Kids Choice Awards.[6] They also starred in the teen comedy film Just My Luck with Lindsay Lohan and Chris Pine.[7]
