Among du's services and campaigns launch were its Number Booking Campaign for both individuals and businesses,[12] Pay by the Second billing system,[9] Mobile TV,[13] and the prepaid plan’s recharge card 'WoW', which offers customers the choice between 'more credit', 'more time' and now the 'more international' recharge option with additional credit on international calls).[14] du also has an online service portal SelfCare[15] for bill payment and managing subscriptions for its customers.
For businesses, services include Closed Business User Group free calling, and preferred International Destinations.[16] du Broadcast Services division brings scalable media technology platforms and telecommunication solutions to the broadcast community through its teleport (Samacom) and Master Control Room (MCR) facilities.[17]
In Feb 2015, du started offering VoLTE through its 4G LTE network.

du currently has an overall employee Emiratisation level of 31%, with 41% of hired UAE Nationals in executive positions. The telecom company has an established Emiratisation scheme, Masar, and regularly participates in career fairs across the UAE to capture the attention of young Emiratis. [21]
In 2012, du doubled the number of Emirati staff in their fully Emirati-managed and operated Fujairah-based UAE National Call Centre up to 120 employees, 90% of which are females.[22] Also in 2012, 146 Emiratis have successfully graduated from their 18-month Masar Graduate Trainee programme. [21]
Corporate Governance & CSR
du has been involved in several corporate governance initiatives in the UAE, Middle East and the USA, promoting best practice through workshops, sponsorships and many more initiatives. Included among these is the sponsorship of the Abu Dhabi Corporate Governance Conference, and of the Hawkamah-OECD 6th annual regional corporate governance conference. Du has also applied systematic compliance, embedded within the Corporate Governance system of the company, with increased environmental initiatives following energy savings directives, as directed by Ahmad Bin Byat, Chairman of Du.[23]
Further efforts to improve corporate governance include training and development, such as DLA Piper workshop on Corporate Governance, Du's Sustainable Development Report - Materiality Session Briefing and quarterly industry trends.[24]
Du has been ranked first in the S&P/Hawkamah Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) Index 2011. The ranking comes as a result of the telecommunications company's sustained efforts to enhancing corporate governance standards within the company and community, which have boosted Du up from last year's ranking to achieve the position as a leader and implementer of best practice.[25]
Entertainment & Sponsorships
du Live!
du Live! is the entertainment platform for du, and its slogan is ‘bringing you the best in live entertainment’.[2] Through the du Live! platform, du sponsors concerts and live events in the UAE, both in du Arena, du Forum and other venues. The Jazz Festival in Dubai featured British and International bands, in addition to supporting the main Jazz Festival from 16 to 18 February 2011.[28]
du Arena
The du Arena is an open-air venue on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi with a standing capacity for 25,000 people, which was called Yas Arena before the rebranding in May 2012 following a 4-year deal between ‘’du’’ and the Flash Entertainment, but no value for the deal was announced publicly.[29] The deal marks the Middle East’s first naming rights partnership.[30]
The rebranding preceded the first Madonna concert, part of her MDNA tour, in the Arab region on 3 and 4 June 2012. du and Think Flash revamped the venue for Madonna’s concert, including building up a new 23m x 54m stage and developing a complex pyrotechnic and lighting system. Grass has been relaid, gravel removed, tarmac walkways laid down throughout the arena and a central public plaza area featuring merchandise, retail and entertainment has been installed.[31]
The du Arena has hosted many international musicians under the telecom’s entertainment platform du Live! in addition to Madonna, including Eric Clapton, Kylie Minogue, Nickelback, Eminem, Andrea Bocelli, Metallica, Kanye West, Sting, Creamfields dance music festival featuring DJs such as Tiesto, David Guetta and Armin Van Buuren.[8]

Criticism
The UAE telecom market is highly restricted, with both major players being largely government owned.[51] There is little real competition, with the choice of provider generally determined by geographic location. du typically has a monopoly on freezones, while Etisalat has a monopoly elsewhere. As a result, contrary to the UAE's aspirations to be a major global IT hub, broadband internet provision in the UAE is among the slowest and most expensive in the world (e.g. a price of AED 299 for 10Mbit/s - which is around US$82), with a current maximum available speed of 500 Mbit/s.
Censorship
In March 2008, Du began selectively blocking VOIP traffic, preventing customers from using the computer-to-phone functionality of VOIP systems. The blocking is justified on the grounds that computer-to-phone VOIP services are illegal under UAE telecom law. Both of the telecoms providers in the UAE derive a large proportion of their income from expatriates making expensive international calls to their home countries.
However, a specific exemption in the telecom law permits the use of VOIP for computer-to-computer calls, and so it is still possible to access VOIP websites, download VOIP software, set up accounts and use the software to make computer-to-computer calls, both audio and video. If a computer-to-phone call is attempted, it will typically fail to connect unless a VPN is used (see below).
On April 14, 2008, du started instituting the same widespread censorship of the web that has been practised by Etisalat for some years. Any attempt to access content deemed 'inappropriate' by the UAE censor results in a 'blocked' page. As well as pornography, blocking includes blogs, forums and news articles that are critical of the UAE. Some websites that do not contain banned content are also blocked due to the nature of the software used to automatically identify potentially controversial material, however users are able to submit banned websites for human evaluation using a contact link provided on the censor page (see below).
