EBS1 (formerly KBS3 and then EBS TV, informally known as EBS 1TV) is a South Korean terrestrial television channel operated by Educational Broadcasting System. The channel is available nationwide without any regional variation in schedules. Terrestrial transmission is handled by KBS.
History
The channel was originally launched by the Korean Broadcasting System on 2 February 1981 as KBS3 (formally known then in Korean as KBS 제3텔레비전, which literally translates to KBS Television 3, and informally as KBS 3TV), and all the educational television programmes previously broadcast on other KBS channels were moved to there.
In 1990, when the responsibility of broadcasting educational contents was separated from the KBS, the channel became a part of the newly formed Educational Broadcasting System. The channel formally became EBS Television, but was verbally identified as EBS.
In 2000, the Educational Broadcasting System itself was incorporated as a public corporation. Digital terrestrial transmission began on 5 November 2001 on LCN 10-1. On 11 February 2015, when EBS2 was launched as an ATSC digital subchannel on LCN 10-2, the channel was officially renamed EBS1.
