Same with "the Queen," it is understood that it is pertaining to the reigning queen (whether Mary I or Elizabeth I) depending on the context of the sentence. E.g. The "Pope" being referred to in this sentence in this article "Henry VIII had broken from the Catholic Church and the authority of the Pope" is none other than Clement VII who was the reigning pope at that time. undo
