Fadden is a suburb in the Canberra, Australia district of Tuggeranong. The postcode is 2904. The suburb is named after Sir Arthur Fadden, Prime Minister of Australia briefly in 1941.[2] It was gazetted on 5 August 1975.[2] Its streets are named after Queensland politicians.[2] It is surrounded by Macarthur, Gowrie and Wanniassa. It is bounded by Erindale Drive, the Wanniassa Hills Nature Reserve, Fadden Pine Plantation and Sternberg Crescent.
Demographics
On Census night 2011, Fadden had a population of 3,083 people. The median age of people in Fadden was 43 years, an increase from 35 in 2001, compared to a median age of 34 for the ACT. Unemployment in Fadden was 1.2 percent lower than the Canberra average. The median weekly individual income for Fadden in 2011 was $1,054, up from $819 in 2006 and $600–$699 in 2001, compared to $917 for the ACT. The median weekly household income was 2,693 up from $1509 in 2006. In 2011 the median monthly housing loan repayment in Fadden was $2,167, up from $1517 in 2006.[1][3][4][5][6]
The residents of Fadden are predominantly Australian born, with 76.5% being born in Australia, compared to 75.3 in 2006 and 77.5% in 2001. In 2011 the three countries of birth for those born overseas were England, 5.4%, China, 1.0%, Scotland 1.0%, New Zealand, 0.9% and Malaysia, 0.7%. This compares to United Kingdom, 5.7%, New Zealand, 1.1%, and Croatia, 0.9% in 2001. The most popular religious affiliations in descending order are Catholic, no religion, Anglican, Uniting, and Eastern Orthodox.[1][3][5]
Suburb amenities
Fadden Primary School are located on Hanlon Crescent. Fadden Primary caters for preschool and kindergarten to year 6.[7]
The Fadden local shopping centre is located on Hanlon Crescent and includes a hairdresser, a medical centre, a Chiropractor and massage therapist, and a veterinary hospital. Fadden's sporting facilities include the Tuggeranong Tennis Centre (now under a different ownerniship and completely rebuilt, called the Mpowerdome) located on Coyne Street, the Fadden Neighbourhood Oval, at the back of the primary school, and tennis courts off Stopford Crescent. Two areas of the Canberra Nature Park are located in the suburb: Wanniassa Hills to the north of the suburb and the smaller Macarthur Hill in the east. Hannah Community Park straddles the border with Gowrie.[8] The Fadden Pine Plantation, a recreational area with substantial playground and barbecue facilities, is located between Isabella Drive, Bugden Avenue and Coyne Street. The Macarthur Scout Hall is located on Coyne Street.[9]
Several ACTION bus routes service Fadden. Routes 65 and 67 run between the Tuggeranong and Woden Interchanges every 20 to 60 minutes between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. The additional services 265 and 267, following the same routes through Fadden as 65 and 67 respectively, run during peak hour from the Tuggeranong Interchange to City West. Route 170 also runs in peak hour from Monash to City West. Flexibus service 967 leaves the Tuggeranong Interchange every hour from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and the Erindale Shops every hour from 8:30pm to 11:30 p.m., and services the suburbs of Fadden, Gowrie and Macarthur.[10]
Politics

Fadden is located within the federal electorate of Canberra, which is currently (2016) represented by Gai Brodtmann in the House of Representatives. In the ACT Legislative Assembly, Fadden is part of the electorate of Brindabella, which elects five members on the basis of proportional representation, currently three Liberal and two Labor.[13] Polling place statistics are shown to the right for the Fadden polling place at Fadden Primary School in the 2016 federal[11] and 2016 ACT[12] elections.
Geology
In the east, Fadden is built on Alluvium. The west of Fadden consists of Deakin Volcanics rhyolite. The rhyolite can be coloured green-grey, purple or cream, and dates from the Silurian age at 414±9 My. A fault heads north-north-west from Macarthur Hill with a quartz outcrop.[14]
