"Fuck You"
Song

"Fuck You", titled "Forget You" or simply "FU" on the radio edits, is a song by American recording artist Cee Lo Green, released as a single in promotion of his third studio album, The Lady Killer.

A music video for the song was released on YouTube on August 19, 2010,[1] featuring kinetic typography, with the lyrics of the song appearing on different colored backgrounds with film grain overlaid on the video. The same thing was done with German and Spanish words, translating the lyrics of the song however the song remained in English. The official music video was released on September 1, 2010.[2]

A remix features 50 Cent and also has a video similar to the original version of the song. A remix by American hip hop group Chiddy Bang was released. The song topped the charts in the United Kingdom, The Netherlands and Israel.

This song won the Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance at the 53rd Grammy Awards on February 13, 2011. The song also won the title of Best Song of 2010 on Metacritic's Best of 2010 Users Poll.[3]

Versions

The song was released in various versions. The radio edit of the song is called "Forget You", while another edit is simply entitled "FU".[4][5] All the versions can be found at the US iTunes store. The original and clean versions and the accompanying music video and lyric video are included in an extended play, entitled "Fuck You - Deluxe Single", available for sale in the iTunes store.[6] The original version was released on August 19, 2010, the clean version on September 14, 2010 and the "FU" version on September 21, 2010 [7] to the US iTunes store.

Green and Scarlet Fever performed the song live on The Colbert Report on Tuesday, November 9, 2010, substituting "Fox News" for the title phrase for a portion of the track. In addition, the first full verse of the song was a satirical parody of Fox News.[8]

Music video

The official music video was released on September 1, 2010 and was directed by Matt Stawski.[2] Taking place in a diner, the video chronicles Cee Lo's misadventures with a girl he has a crush on - known throughout the video as "The Heartbreaker". In the beginning, a young Cee Lo offers to let the Heartbreaker play with his toy truck, but she ignores him and walks away with another boy, who has a toy Ferrari F40. In his high school years, Cee Lo works at the diner as a chef. He attempts to woo the Heartbreaker with a bouquet of flowers, but slips on a basket of fries deliberately dropped by another boy. The flowers fly out of his hand and land on a much younger girl's lap. During his college years, he studies in the diner with another woman (implied to be his music tutor). He then attempts to woo the Heartbreaker by having the waitress draw a heart-shaped ketchup mark on her hot dog plate, but she approaches him with a basket of fries and spills them on his shirt. Fast-forward to present day, when Cee Lo is now known as "The Lady Killer". He drives past the diner to find the Heartbreaker working at the diner, sweeping the front entrance. He waves at her before driving away with his backup singers.

The clean version of the video contains reshot elements which have been mixed with parts from the original, most notably when Cee Lo is on screen and he is singing alternative lyrics. The video tends to freeze for a split second when a bowdlerized lyric is being mouthed to prevent the lips from being read.

Cover versions

The series 7 contestants of the British TV talent contest The X Factor performed the "Forget You" version of the song on the October 24, 2010 episode. Green's response was, "I saw it, I thought it was cool."[9] The same version of the song was featured on the November 16, 2010 episode of Glee, "The Substitute", whereon Gwyneth Paltrow sang lead.[10] This version reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and helped propel the original to a new peak of #9. It was also used at the end of the No Ordinary Family episode entitled "No Ordinary Visitors", originally broadcast November 9, 2010. William Shatner performed his own rendition of the song on Lopez Tonight, substituting a few words in the song.[11] Chiptune artist Brendan "Inverse Phase" Becker released a parody written for 8-bit Nintendo hardware on September 27, 2010. The lyrics were changed to that of a forlorn NES singing to its owner that had forsaken it for a Sega Genesis. An accompanying video was released which featured an intro sequence to display the "sung" lyrics.[12] The Pretty Reckless performed a cover version on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge show in December 2010. The American Pop rock band "All Hail The Crimson King" (or AHTCK) performed a cover of the song on YouTube and at many of the shows in Southern California. Singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles featured the song as an intro to her song "Gonna Get Over You" during certain shows of her Kaleidoscope Heart tour in 2010. [13] Fall Out Boy vocalist Patrick Stump covered this song during a cappella YouTube cover of all nominated Singles of the Year of 2010 featured by the Grammys. Furthermore, an American Sign Language version has also appeared on YouTube.[14]

Critical reception

Jason Lipshutz from Billboard gave the song a positive review stating, "it's as sunny as a '60s Motown hit and as expletive-laden as an early Eminem song, a combination that fits the singer's sky-high vocals and offbeat sense of humor well. Over a twinkling piano line, bumping bass and steady percussion, Green shakes off a failed relationship with a gold digger by packing the simple pleasures of old-school soul music into tongue-in-cheek verses and a suitably soaring chorus."[15] Nick Levine of Digital Spy gave the song four out of five stars writing: "As its title suggests, 'Fuck You' is essentially a middle finger extending from the fist of a pop single—and a gloriously catchy Motown stomper of a pop single at that."[16]

Accolades

The song was nominated for Grammy Awards in the categories of Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Urban/Alternative Performance, winning the last, and the video was nominated for Best Short Form Music Video.[17] It was named the #1 song of 2010 by Time.[18]

Live performances

Green performed this song with an all-female backing band named Scarlet Fever on Later... with Jools Holland,[19] BBC Radio,[20][21] Late Show with David Letterman,[22] the 19th annual Children in Need telethon, the Christmas edition of BBC1 chart programme Top of the Pops, Saturday Night Live,[23][24] and many other venues. Green also performed at the 53rd Grammy Awards with Gwyneth Paltrow and The Muppets, and the 2011 BRIT Awards alongside Paloma Faith.
