Gairkata is a census town in Jalpaiguri district in the state of West Bengal, India. At times, it is also spelled as Goyerkata. Gairkata G.P is the one of the biggest G.P in Jalpaiguri. Although the GP is officially written as Sakoyajhora no-1. From Dudua river to Alipurduar district border it is a nice village . A nice Madhubani Park is here on the bank of Madhubani river. One old and finest tea garden is here. It is the native village of prominent Bengali writer Samaresh Majumdar, poet and journalist Bikash Sarkar and CPI leader Samar Ganguly. Gosaihat Eco park also situated in this area under Gairkata-Moraghat Range. Telepara is its industrial hub. Gairkata is in the middle of Dhupguri block. Gairkata reading club is one of oldest club in Jalpaiguri district established on 1912. A NGO named Aaranyak is situated in gairkata.

Geography

Gairkata is located at 26°41′N 89°02′E / 26.68°N 89.03°E / 26.68; 89.03.[1] Gairkata is on the route of Asian Highway 48 from Phuentsholing to Changrabandha.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Gairkata had a population of 8713. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Gairkata has an average literacy rate of 66%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 59%. In Gairkata, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Gairkata is a Census Town city in district of Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. The Gairkata Census Town has population of 7,577 of which 3,827 are males while 3,750 are females as per report released by Census India 2011.

Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 749 which is 9.89% of total population of Gairkata (CT). In Gairkata Census Town, Female Sex Ratio is of 980 against state average of 950. Moreover, Child Sex Ratio in Gairkata is around 997 compared to West Bengal state average of 956. Literacy rate of Gairkata city is 80.64% higher than state average of 76.26%. In Gairkata, Male literacy is around 85.83% while female literacy rate is 75.33%. Out of total population, 2,908 were engaged in work or business activity. Of this 2,215 were males while 693 were females. In census survey, worker is defined as person who does business, job, service, and cultivator and labour activity. Of total 2908 working population, 82.32% were engaged in Main Work while 17.68% of total workers were engaged in Marginal Work.

Gairkata Census Town has total administration over 1,749 houses to which it supplies basic amenities like water and sewerage. It is also authorized to build roads within Census Town limits and impose taxes on properties coming under its jurisdiction. Caste Factor Gairkata (CT) of Jalpaiguri has substantial population of Schedule Caste. Schedule Caste (SC) constitutes 31.38% while Schedule Tribe (ST) were 17.08% of total population in Gairkata (CT). [3]
