Girl's Tyme

Girl's Tyme was an African-American girl group formed in Houston, Texas in 1990 that eventually became the top selling group Destiny's Child.

Biography

In 1990, auditions were held in Houston, Texas for a girl group partly managed by Andretta Tillman. After a series of auditions Támar Davis (10), Beyoncé Knowles (10; managed by Mathew Knowles), Kelly Rowland (11; managed by Mathew Knowles), and dancers/rappers LaTavia Roberson (10), Nikki Taylor (13), and her younger sister Nina Taylor (11) were chosen for the group. Girl's Tyme began rehearsing a variety of R&B, rap, and pop songs. They choreographed dance routines to accompany the songs and began appearing in venues and events all over the Houston area including Black Expo, Miss Black Houston Metroplex Pageant, and Peoples Workshop Sammy Davis Jr. Awards.

The group generated a buzz and were profiled in the Houston Chronicle, where a music critic predicted they would become stars. The expectations were high as Girl's Tyme prepared for their first national exposure on the television show Star Search. However, the group did not advance in the competition and what was expected to have been their big break instead turned out to be the first of many failures and led to many lineup changes for the group. Three members left, including Támar Davis who went on to a solo career which included collaborations with Prince and Kwamé.Three of the six members remained, which included Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and LaTavia Roberson. A fourth member, LeToya Luckett, was added. Matthew Knowles eventually become the group's manager after Luckett's and Roberson's manager's (Andretta Tillman) death due to terminal illness.

In the following months, the group made several name changes which included: Cliché, Something Fresh, Destiny and The Dolls. Incidentally, a similar group that preceded called The Dollz, established by a woman named Janice Cummings, had also held auditions that garnered the interest of the same girls who tried out for the group organized by Andretta Tillman and Matthew Knowles. Among them included a young singer by name of Keke Wyatt who opted not to join The Dollz, despite receiving a callback and attending a few rehearsals. After long consideration of what the group's new name would be, nothing seemed right to Tina Knowles who became the group's stylist. She then came across a page marked with the girls picture in her bible. In the Book of Isaiah the word Destiny caught her eye; Matthew then added child. Thus the new name of the group was then changed to Destiny's Child.
