Emory University's Goizueta Business School (also known as Goizueta Business School, Emory Business School, or simply Goizueta – pronounced goy-swet-ah) is the private business school of Emory University located in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. It is named after Roberto C. Goizueta, former president of The Coca-Cola Company.

Goizueta Business School, Emory University

History

On February 18, 1919, the dean of Emory College, Howard Odum, recommended the creation of a "school of economics and business administration" to the Board of Trustees. Thus, in the fall of 1919, the new school worked with Emory College to offer courses in economics, accounting, and business law. By 1925, there was one faculty member and full-time assistant, five staff members and 145 students. In 1926, eight students received the Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Two decades after the school awarded degrees in business administration, the school accepted its first female student in 1954. In the same year, the MBA program commenced, with 19 registered students.

In 1992, the evening MBA program was introduced. When the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business began accrediting master’s programs, Emory’s program was one of the first to be approved. Four years later, Emory appeared on the list of the top American colleges and universities producing U.S. executives. This newfound position accompanied new programs, such as the concentration within the MBA program for professional accounting and, in 1979, the Executive MBA program. Also at this time, the school created a plan to allow students to complete both the MBA and Juris Doctor degree within four years. Rankings of the school’s programs highlight the results: in 1986, the Executive MBA program was ranked in the top 15 in a Business Week survey.

In 1994, the school was renamed for Roberto C. Goizueta, the CEO of The Coca-Cola Company[1]. The millennium brought about a new PhD program in business administration and a new program in Real Estate. The school installed its current dean, Professor Erika James, in 2014.

Undergraduate BBA Program

Goizueta Business School Courtyard
The undergraduate Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program at Goizueta Business School supports the development of deep expertise in the functional fields of business while assuring that students obtain the liberal arts foundation necessary for critical thinking and deep analysis. The mission of the program is to help its students grow intellectually, personally, and professionally so that they feel enabled, empowered, and motivated to make significant positive contributions to the organizations they serve and to society as a whole. Its junior year admission model provides students with the option to pursue a wide range of inter-disciplinary and non-traditional offerings alongside a business curriculum. As a result, students graduate with the knowledge and experiences that will enable them to make meaningful and informed contributions to the organizations they serve throughout their career.

BBA students take a core curriculum of classes, which includes courses such as Corporate Finance, Strategic Management, Marketing, Process & Systems Management, Business Communications, and Business Law. Students also concentrate in one or more area depth. Area depths include Accounting (CPA and non-CPA tracks), Finance, Marketing, Strategy & Management Consulting, and, Information Systems & Operations Management (ISOM)[5]. Students may also opt to specialize in secondary depths that cut across these areas, such as International Business, Entrepreneurship, Real Estate, and Analytic Consulting. Goizueta partners with several departments within Emory College to offer collaborative concentrations to both business and liberal arts majors, including those in the arts, film studies, human health, and environmental studies [6]. The BBA curriculum at Goizueta is distinctive not only in terms of the quality, range and scope of academic approaches provided but also because of the built-in flexibility that allows for both traditional and customized, unique concentrations and depths incorporating coursework within and outside of the Business School, allowing students to earn a double major from Emory College within four years.

The BBA program graduates approximately 400 students per year, creating an intimate environment in which students are afforded the opportunity to know their faculty and classmates well. Students are assigned an advisor who works closely with them to provide one-on-one coaching and to guide and expand their academic and professional development. The BBA program provides ample opportunities for students to take on leadership roles through various clubs and events, including hosting the annual Undergraduate Business School Leadership Conference, bringing more than 100 student leaders from top schools across the globe to Goizueta each spring [7]. In addition, students have access to an in-house BBA Career Management Center that provides extensive counseling and job/internship resources. Special offerings include multiple career treks throughout the U.S., programs like Resumania and mock interview practice, multi-layered mentoring, and a multitude of company presentations and panels to help students connect to an extensive and exciting array of top-tier companies.[8]

Over the last 20 years, Goizueta has tripled the number of countries in which its students study abroad and almost quadrupled the list of partner schools. One of the hardest tasks for students is narrowing down this list of 45+ international partner schools in 25+ countries. At Goizueta, a rich international atmosphere abounds. Every BBA degree student takes a class with an international focus, and more than 25% of the students in each BBA class are degree-seeking international students. To this, the school adds 100 students per year from its 45+ international partner schools, which are accepted in exchange for the Goizueta students who go abroad.[9]

Entrance to the BBA Program occurs when students have attained junior standing. As a result of AP credit, transfer hours, and/or summer courses, half of the class has a sufficient number of credit hours to enter during the spring of sophomore year, and the remainder enters the following fall. Admission is granted by application and is largely based on overall GPA, performance in prerequisite courses such as economics, statistics, and accounting, and campus involvement. The program is designed for students who have spent at least a year at Emory or Oxford College, and historically, over 75% of these applicants have been admitted. The BBA class of 2018 had an average SAT of 1381 and average college GPA of 3.63.
