"Gypsy" is a song by American recording artist Lady Gaga, taken from her third studio album Artpop (2013). It was written by Lady Gaga, RedOne, Hugo Leclercq and Paul "DJ White Shadow" Blair.

Composition

"Gypsy" is a Europop[1] and electropop song[2] with classic rock and house influences.[3][4] Adam Markovitz of Entertainment Weekly said "Gypsy" contains "barroom ivory-tickling" and a swooping hook.[5] Rolling Stone described the song as an "eighties-style anthem".[6]

Promotion

In October 2013, Gaga performed "Gypsy" on a grand piano for guests at a listening party in Berlin, Germany, wearing lingerie and a fake mustache.[7][8] She said of the song: "I wrote this song as I was travelling around the world… They say 'a Gypsy doesn't have a home.' But I do have a home. I have a home with you always."[9][10] Malene Arpe, entertainment contributor to the Toronto Star, said her performance was goosebump-inducing and caused viewers to forget about the mustache "right in the middle of her face".[11] Gaga performed the song at her ArtRave in November 2013,[12][13] on Saturday Night Live later that month,[14][15] and during her second Thanksgiving television special Lady Gaga and the Muppets' Holiday Spectacular, which aired on ABC.[16]

In her keynote interview for SXSW, March 2014, Gaga stated that she believes the song will receive a music video.[17]

Reception

"Gypsy" received generally positive reviews from music critics. Adam Markovitz from Entertainment Weekly considered the track one of the album's best, calling it "enjoyable".[5] Matt Russoniello from Celebuzz called "Gypsy" the new "The Edge of Glory", noting similarities to Gaga's 2011 song, and suggesting the possibility of the former becoming a single in the future.[18] Caryn Ganz from Rolling Stone praised the song's simple lyrics, describing it as an "Eighties-style anthem where Gaga admits her love of performing."[6] Chris Bosman from Time magazine, thought that "Gypsy" serves as the "epic end-of-album track" along with "Dope", but criticized the songs for not being unique enough, saying that a one song would have done "the job better than both".[19]

In South Korea, following the release of Artpop, "Gypsy" debuted at number 35 on the Gaon Singles Chart, with sales of 3,549 digital downloads and ended up with 4,768 sales.[20][21]
