Truham High School student Charlie Spring is in a forced relationship with a boy named Ben Hope. In his new form class, Charlie is assigned to sit next to Nick Nelson, who he develops feelings on. They become friends, though Charlie is unsure of Nick's sexuality. Nick invites him to join the rugby team, and he accepts. After Charlie told Ben he doesn’t want to meet up anymore, effectively a breakup, Ben forcibly kisses him, and Nick fends him off. Meanwhile, one of Charlie's friends, Elle Argent, moves to all-girls school Higgs after coming out as a trans woman.
2"Crush"Euros LynAlice Oseman22 April 2022 (2022-04-22)
Charlie vents to Nick on his relationship with Ben, who Nick condemns. Tao assumes that Nick is heterosexual and tells Charlie to abandon his feelings, but Charlie refuses. On another day, Tao tells him that Nick is in a relationship with a girl Tara Jones, who is friends with Elle at Higgs. Elle soon learns that Tara is in a relationship with girl Darcy Olsson. While hanging out at Charlie's house, Nick secretly tries to touch Charlie's hand while he’s sleeping, and begins questioning his sexuality.

Nick is invited to friend Harry Greene's 16th birthday party. Nick invites Charlie, who accepts. His friend, Tao Xu, begins getting jealous of his friend's crush, which has been causing their friendship to be more distant. Harry and his group begin teasing Nick to being with Tara, and Charlie leaves the scene out of anxiety. Tara comes out to Nick, who breaks his friendship with Harry. Imogen, one of Nick’s best friends, tells Nick she likes him. Ben again forces Charlie, who pushes him. Nick and Charlie then meet again at a secluded room, where they kiss; Nick becomes dumbfounded and leaves the sad Charlie after he hears Harry looking for him.
4"Secret"Euros LynAlice Oseman22 April 2022 (2022-04-22)
Charlie is disappointed at Nick's sudden departure at the party, but the next morning he is greeted with Nick at his doorstep, soaked in rain. Nick explains that he is still closeted and they embrace. After a rugby game, Tao and Elle eavesdrop on Nick—albeit reluctantly—agreeing on a peer-pressured date with Imogen. Tao and Elle themselves are hinted to be romantically interested.
5"Friend"Euros LynAlice Oseman22 April 2022 (2022-04-22)
As Nick is about to cancel the date with Imogen when she reveals that her dog died, and Nick reverts his plan out of sympathy. Charlie invites Nick to his birthday celebration at a bowling alley. At the party, Tao tells Charlie about his eavesdropping and Nick overhears. Nick later clarifies the truth to Charlie, then explicitly says that he likes Charlie. The next day, Nick explains the situation to Imogen, who says she understands.
6"Girls"Euros LynAlice Oseman22 April 2022 (2022-04-22)
Nick thinks that he might be bisexual; Charlie tells him to take his time, and he comes out to Tara and Darcy, who suggest a double date. Elle reveals she has a crush on Tao, and confronts Tara and Darcy for subtly breaking the secret, but is happy for Nick and Charlie. That day, there is an orchestral concert between Truham and Higgs; Tara angrily leaves upon homophobic sentiments, and Darcy follows. They embrace and go back to perform.
7"Bully"Euros LynAlice Oseman22 April 2022 (2022-04-22)
Nick invites Charlie to go out to the cinema with some of his other Year 11 friends, saying that Harry won’t be there. However, they are greeted with bullying led by Harry, culminating with Charlie being called a fag and Nick punching Harry. At the car park, Ben verbally attacks Charlie. Tao feels guilty for unintentionally worsening Charlie's situation by verbally attacking Harry, but as Charlie continues to ignore him, Tao rages at him for not telling him about his relationship with Nick.
8"Boyfriend"Euros LynAlice Oseman22 April 2022 (2022-04-22)
Pressured by Tao, Charlie quits rugby and becomes depressed, ignoring Nick. Tao and Nick then have a healthy conversation, slowly coming to terms. Tao reconciles with Charlie, who also confronts Ben for indecency. Nick privately explains to Charlie that he changed his life, begging him to not break up; Charlie accepts, and they go to a beach. Nick reveals his plan to come out as bisexual. He first does it to his mother, who tearfully accepts him and his relationship with Charlie.

Production

Development

See-Saw Films optioned the television rights of Heartstopper in July 2019. On 20 January 2021, it was revealed that Netflix ordered an 8-half hour episode series, with Oseman herself as writer and Euros Lyn as director and executive producer.[2] Also executive producing are Patrick Walters, Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Iain Canning, and Emile Sherman with Zorana Piggott as producer. Production design by Tim Dickel, series set decoration by Maxwell Fine and props by Zoe Seiffert.

Casting

Daniel Edwards-Guy served as casting director. An open casting call went out in January and February 2021 for five of the main characters as well as three recurring.[3] Oseman explained that Aled would not appear in the adaptation because she wanted to respect his story in Radio Silence. After reportedly over 10,000 people auditioned, she announced the first round of casting in April 2021, with Kit Connor and Joe Locke starring as Nick and Charlie respectively.[4] The rest of the cast were announced days later, including Yasmin Finney, Sebastian Croft, William Gao, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Cormac Hyde-Corrin, Rhea Norwood, and Tobie Donovan.[5] Jenny Walser joined in the cast in May.[6]

Filming

Production began on location in April and wrapped in June 2021.[7] Filming primarily took place on location in the Kent coastal town of Herne Bay, with Herne Bay High School standing in for the fictional Truham Grammar School for Boys.[8]

Release

First look images were revealed on 1 March 2022 followed by a teaser on 16 March.[9] An official trailer was released on 13 April. The episode titles were released on 19 April.[10] The first season was released on 22 April, 2022.[1]

Reception

The series has received critical acclaim. The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 100% approval rating with an average rating of 8.5/10, based on 14 critic reviews.[11] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned a score of 82 out of 100 based on 5 critics, indicating "universal acclaim".[12]
