"Jabaja" (ジャーバージャ, Jābāja), stylized "Ja-Ba-Ja" is the 51st single from Japanese idol girl group AKB48, released in Japan on March 14, 2018 through You, Be Cool! / King Records. The song features Nana Okada as the center performer.

Background

"Jabaja" lyrics are written by Yasushi Akimoto with music by Akira Sunset & Naoki Endo, and arrangement by Apazzi. Akira worked previously on other singles/coupling songs for Sakamichi Series & AKB48 Group. Apazzi previously arranged "11gatsu no Anklet" (50th single) and various songs from AKB48 Group and 2017 Taisho winner for the song of the year "Influencer", by Nogizaka46. AKB48 member Anna Iriyama tweeted that AKB48 had coined the word, and that it doesn't have any particular meaning.[1]

Music video

The music video brings back a "Sakura" theme, last used in "Kimi wa Melody" (2016).[citation needed] The music video joins all the references to the graduation season, such as: a gospel choir, marching band, cheerleaders, and even a rocket launch (pouring Sakura petals).[2] The complete music video clocks at 8 minutes on DVD versions (YouTube edit lasts 5m19s without staff credits).[citation needed]

YKBX (who also worked with Kis-My-Ft2, Hatsune Miku and Namie Amuro) is the director of the music video, and also developed the art design and artworks for the covers from all types of the single.[citation needed]

Promotion and release

The song was announced during the group's "Request Hour 2018" event. The track was revealed during the "AKB48 All Night Nippon" broadcast on February 22, 2018, and along with a full music video.[citation needed] This single was released in 11 versions: 5 limited editions (CD+DVD+Event Ticket), 5 regular editions (CD+DVD), and a theater edition (CD only)[citation needed] The first ever song TV performance (in full size version) was aired on BS Premium's AKB48 SHOW on March 17.[citation needed]

The single topped the latest Billboard Japan Hot 100 chart dated March 12 to 18, selling 1 million copies on its first day and finishing its first week with a total of 1,202,909 copies sold.[3]
